17 And Jacob journeyed to Succoth, and built him an house, and made booths for his cattle: therefore the name of the place is called Succoth.

18 And Jacob came to Shalem, a city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Padanaram; and pitched his tent before the city.

19 And he bought a parcel of a field, where he had spread his tent, at the hand of the children of Hamor, Shechem's father, for an hundred pieces of money.

20 And he erected there an altar, and called it EleloheIsrael.

34 And Dinah the daughter of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.

And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and defiled her.

And his soul clave unto Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the damsel, and spake kindly unto the damsel.

And Shechem spake unto his father Hamor, saying, Get me this damsel to wife.

And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter: now his sons were with his cattle in the field: and Jacob held his peace until they were come.

17 Jacob, however, went to Sukkoth,(A) where he built a place for himself and made shelters for his livestock. That is why the place is called Sukkoth.[a]

18 After Jacob came from Paddan Aram,[b](B) he arrived safely at the city of Shechem(C) in Canaan and camped within sight of the city. 19 For a hundred pieces of silver,[c] he bought from the sons of Hamor,(D) the father of Shechem,(E) the plot of ground(F) where he pitched his tent.(G) 20 There he set up an altar(H) and called it El Elohe Israel.[d]

Dinah and the Shechemites

34 Now Dinah,(I) the daughter Leah had borne to Jacob, went out to visit the women of the land. When Shechem(J) son of Hamor(K) the Hivite,(L) the ruler of that area, saw her, he took her and raped her.(M) His heart was drawn to Dinah(N) daughter of Jacob;(O) he loved(P) the young woman and spoke tenderly(Q) to her. And Shechem said to his father Hamor, “Get me this girl as my wife.”(R)

When Jacob heard that his daughter Dinah had been defiled,(S) his sons were in the fields with his livestock; so he did nothing about it until they came home.
