37 Then (A)Jacob took fresh sticks of poplar and almond and plane trees, and peeled white streaks in them, exposing the white of the sticks. 38 He set the sticks that he had peeled in front of the flocks in the troughs, that is, the (B)watering places, where the flocks came to drink. And since they bred when they came to drink, 39 the flocks bred in front of the sticks and so the flocks brought forth striped, speckled, and spotted.

37 Jacob, however, took fresh-cut branches from poplar, almond(A) and plane trees(B) and made white stripes on them by peeling the bark and exposing the white inner wood of the branches.(C) 38 Then he placed the peeled branches(D) in all the watering troughs,(E) so that they would be directly in front of the flocks when they came to drink. When the flocks were in heat(F) and came to drink, 39 they mated in front of the branches.(G) And they bore young that were streaked or speckled or spotted.(H)
