(vi) 28 So may God give you dew from heaven, the richness of the earth, and grain and wine in abundance. 29 May peoples serve you and nations bow down to you. May you be lord over your kinsmen, let your mother’s descendants bow down to you. Cursed be everyone who curses you, and blessed be everyone who blesses you!”

30 But as soon as Yitz’chak had finished giving his blessing to Ya‘akov, when Ya‘akov had barely left his father’s presence, ‘Esav his brother came in from his hunting. 31 He too had prepared a tasty meal and brought it to his father, and now he said to his father, “Let my father get up and eat from his son’s game, so that you may give me your blessing.” 32 Yitz’chak his father said to him, “Who are you?” and he answered, “I am your son, your firstborn, ‘Esav.” 33 Yitz’chak began trembling uncontrollably and said, “Then who was it that took game and brought it to me? I ate it all just before you came, and I gave my blessing to him. That’s the truth, and the blessing must stand.” 34 When ‘Esav heard his father’s words he burst into loud, bitter sobbing. “Father, bless me too,” he begged. 35 He replied, “Your brother came deceitfully and took away your blessing.” 36 ‘Esav said, “His name, Ya‘akov [he supplants], really suits him — because he has supplanted me these two times: he took away my birthright, and here, now he has taken away my blessing!” Then he asked, “Haven’t you saved a blessing for me?” 37 Yitz’chak answered ‘Esav, “Look, I have made him your lord, I have given him all his kinsmen as servants, and I have given him grain and wine to sustain him. What else is there that I can do for you, my son?” 38 ‘Esav said to his father, “Have you only one blessing, my father? Father, bless me too!” ‘Esav wept aloud, 39 and Yitz’chak his father answered him: “Here! Your home will be of the richness of the earth and of the dew of heaven from above. 40 You will live by your sword, and you will serve your brother. But when you break loose, you will shake his yoke off your neck.”

41 ‘Esav hated his brother because of the blessing his father had given him. ‘Esav said to himself, “The time for mourning my father will soon come, and then I will kill my brother Ya‘akov.” 42 But the words of ‘Esav her older son were told to Rivkah. She sent for Ya‘akov her younger son and said to him, “Here, your brother ‘Esav is comforting himself over you by planning to kill you. 43 Therefore, my son, listen to me: get up and escape to Lavan my brother in Haran. 44 Stay with him a little while, until your brother’s anger subsides. 45 Your brother’s anger will turn away from you, and he will forget what you did to him. Then I’ll send and bring you back from there. Why should I lose both of you on the same day?”

46 Rivkah said to Yitz’chak, “I’m sick to death of Hitti women! If Ya‘akov marries one of the Hitti women, like those who live here, my life won’t be worth living.”

28 So Yitz’chak called Ya‘akov, and, after blessing him, charged him: “You are not to choose a wife from the Hitti women. Go now to the home of B’tu’el your mother’s father, and choose a wife there from the daughters of Lavan your mother’s brother. May El Shaddai bless you, make you fruitful and increase your descendants, until they become a whole assembly of peoples. And may he give you the blessing which he gave Avraham, you and your descendants with you, so that you will possess the land you will travel through, the land God gave to Avraham.”

28 May God give you heaven’s dew(A)
    and earth’s richness(B)
an abundance of grain(C) and new wine.(D)
29 May nations serve you
and peoples bow down to you.(E)
Be lord over your brothers,
and may the sons of your mother bow down to you.(F)
May those who curse you be cursed
and those who bless you be blessed.(G)

30 After Isaac finished blessing him, and Jacob had scarcely left his father’s presence, his brother Esau came in from hunting. 31 He too prepared some tasty food and brought it to his father. Then he said to him, “My father, please sit up and eat some of my game, so that you may give me your blessing.”(H)

32 His father Isaac asked him, “Who are you?”(I)

“I am your son,” he answered, “your firstborn, Esau.(J)

33 Isaac trembled violently and said, “Who was it, then, that hunted game and brought it to me?(K) I ate it just before you came and I blessed him—and indeed he will be blessed!(L)

34 When Esau heard his father’s words, he burst out with a loud and bitter cry(M) and said to his father, “Bless(N) me—me too, my father!”

35 But he said, “Your brother came deceitfully(O) and took your blessing.”(P)

36 Esau said, “Isn’t he rightly named Jacob[a]?(Q) This is the second time he has taken advantage of(R) me: He took my birthright,(S) and now he’s taken my blessing!”(T) Then he asked, “Haven’t you reserved any blessing for me?”

37 Isaac answered Esau, “I have made him lord over you and have made all his relatives his servants, and I have sustained him with grain and new wine.(U) So what can I possibly do for you, my son?”

38 Esau said to his father, “Do you have only one blessing, my father? Bless me too, my father!” Then Esau wept aloud.(V)

39 His father Isaac answered him,(W)

“Your dwelling will be
    away from the earth’s richness,
away from the dew(X) of heaven above.(Y)
40 You will live by the sword
and you will serve(Z) your brother.(AA)
But when you grow restless,
    you will throw his yoke
    from off your neck.(AB)

41 Esau held a grudge(AC) against Jacob(AD) because of the blessing his father had given him. He said to himself, “The days of mourning(AE) for my father are near; then I will kill(AF) my brother Jacob.”(AG)

42 When Rebekah was told what her older son Esau(AH) had said, she sent for her younger son Jacob and said to him, “Your brother Esau is planning to avenge himself by killing you.(AI) 43 Now then, my son, do what I say:(AJ) Flee at once to my brother Laban(AK) in Harran.(AL) 44 Stay with him for a while(AM) until your brother’s fury subsides. 45 When your brother is no longer angry with you and forgets what you did to him,(AN) I’ll send word for you to come back from there.(AO) Why should I lose both of you in one day?”

46 Then Rebekah said to Isaac, “I’m disgusted with living because of these Hittite(AP) women. If Jacob takes a wife from among the women of this land,(AQ) from Hittite women like these, my life will not be worth living.”(AR)

28 So Isaac called for Jacob and blessed(AS) him. Then he commanded him: “Do not marry a Canaanite woman.(AT) Go at once to Paddan Aram,[b](AU) to the house of your mother’s father Bethuel.(AV) Take a wife for yourself there, from among the daughters of Laban, your mother’s brother.(AW) May God Almighty[c](AX) bless(AY) you and make you fruitful(AZ) and increase your numbers(BA) until you become a community of peoples. May he give you and your descendants the blessing given to Abraham,(BB) so that you may take possession of the land(BC) where you now reside as a foreigner,(BD) the land God gave to Abraham.”
