And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the east; and there he put the man whom he had formed. And out of the ground the Lord God made to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food, the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

10 A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and there it divided and became four rivers. 11 The name of the first is Pishon; it is the one which flows around the whole land of Hav′ilah, where there is gold; 12 and the gold of that land is good; bdellium and onyx stone are there. 13 The name of the second river is Gihon; it is the one which flows around the whole land of Cush. 14 And the name of the third river is Tigris, which flows east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphra′tes.

15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die.”

18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” 19 So out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all cattle, and to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for the man there was not found a helper fit for him. 21 So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh; 22 and the rib which the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. 23 Then the man said,

“This at last is bone of my bones
    and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called Woman,[a]
because she was taken out of Man.”[b]

24 Therefore a man leaves his father and his mother and cleaves to his wife, and they become one flesh. 25 And the man and his wife were both naked, and were not ashamed.

Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden;(A) and there he put the man he had formed. The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees(B) that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life(C) and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.(D)

10 A river(E) watering the garden flowed from Eden;(F) from there it was separated into four headwaters. 11 The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah,(G) where there is gold. 12 (The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin[a](H) and onyx are also there.) 13 The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush.[b] 14 The name of the third river is the Tigris;(I) it runs along the east side of Ashur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.(J)

15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden(K) to work it and take care of it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden;(L) 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil,(M) for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”(N)

18 The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”(O)

19 Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals(P) and all the birds in the sky.(Q) He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called(R) each living creature,(S) that was its name. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals.

But for Adam[c] no suitable helper(T) was found. 21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep;(U) and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs[d] and then closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib[e](V) he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.

23 The man said,

“This is now bone of my bones
    and flesh of my flesh;(W)
she shall be called(X) ‘woman,’
for she was taken out of man.(Y)

24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united(Z) to his wife, and they become one flesh.(AA)

25 Adam and his wife were both naked,(AB) and they felt no shame.
