20 So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him.

21 And the Lord God caused a (A)deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. 22 Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man He [a]made into a woman, (B)and He (C)brought her to the man.

23 And Adam said:

“This is now (D)bone of my bones
And flesh of my flesh;
She shall be called [b]Woman,
Because she was (E)taken out of [c]Man.”

24 (F)Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and (G)be[d] joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

25 (H)And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not (I)ashamed.

The Temptation and Fall of Man(J)

Now (K)the serpent was (L)more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”

And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the (M)fruit of the trees of the garden; but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you (N)touch it, lest you die.’ ”

(O)Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

So when the woman (P)saw that the tree was good for food, that it was [e]pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit (Q)and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, (R)and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves [f]coverings.

And they heard (S)the [g]sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the [h]cool of the day, and Adam and his wife (T)hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.

Then the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?”

10 So he said, “I heard Your voice in the garden, (U)and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself.”

11 And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?”

12 Then the man said, (V)“The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate.”

13 And the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?”

The woman said, (W)“The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

14 So the Lord God said to the serpent:

“Because you have done this,
You are cursed more than all cattle,
And more than every beast of the field;
On your belly you shall go,
And (X)you shall eat dust
All the days of your life.
15 And I will put enmity
Between you and the woman,
And between (Y)your seed and (Z)her Seed;
(AA)He shall bruise your head,
And you shall bruise His heel.”

16 To the woman He said:

“I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception;
(AB)In pain you shall bring forth children;
(AC)Your desire shall be [i]for your husband,
And he shall (AD)rule over you.”

17 Then to Adam He said, (AE)“Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree (AF)of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’:

(AG)“Cursed is the ground for your sake;
(AH)In toil you shall eat of it
All the days of your life.
18 Both thorns and thistles it shall [j]bring forth for you,
And (AI)you shall eat the herb of the field.
19 (AJ)In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread
Till you return to the ground,
For out of it you were taken;
(AK)For dust you are,
And (AL)to dust you shall return.”

20 And Adam called his wife’s name (AM)Eve,[k] because she was the mother of all living.

20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals.

But for Adam[a] no suitable helper(A) was found. 21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep;(B) and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs[b] and then closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib[c](C) he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.

23 The man said,

“This is now bone of my bones
    and flesh of my flesh;(D)
she shall be called(E) ‘woman,’
    for she was taken out of man.(F)

24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united(G) to his wife, and they become one flesh.(H)

25 Adam and his wife were both naked,(I) and they felt no shame.

The Fall

Now the serpent(J) was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?(K)

The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,(L) but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’”(M)

“You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman.(N) “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God,(O) knowing good and evil.”

When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable(P) for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband,(Q) who was with her, and he ate it.(R) Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked;(S) so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.(T)

Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking(U) in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid(V) from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”(W)

10 He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid(X) because I was naked;(Y) so I hid.”

11 And he said, “Who told you that you were naked?(Z) Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?(AA)

12 The man said, “The woman you put here with me(AB)—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”

13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?”

The woman said, “The serpent deceived me,(AC) and I ate.”

14 So the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this,

“Cursed(AD) are you above all livestock
    and all wild animals!
You will crawl on your belly
    and you will eat dust(AE)
    all the days of your life.
15 And I will put enmity
    between you and the woman,
    and between your offspring[d](AF) and hers;(AG)
he will crush[e] your head,(AH)
    and you will strike his heel.”

16 To the woman he said,

“I will make your pains in childbearing very severe;
    with painful labor you will give birth to children.(AI)
Your desire will be for your husband,
    and he will rule over you.(AJ)

17 To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat from it,’(AK)

“Cursed(AL) is the ground(AM) because of you;
    through painful toil(AN) you will eat food from it
    all the days of your life.(AO)
18 It will produce thorns and thistles(AP) for you,
    and you will eat the plants of the field.(AQ)
19 By the sweat of your brow(AR)
    you will eat your food(AS)
until you return to the ground,
    since from it you were taken;
for dust you are
    and to dust you will return.”(AT)

20 Adam[f] named his wife Eve,[g](AU) because she would become the mother of all the living.
