Abram and Melchizedek(A)

18 Then (B)Melchizedek king of Salem brought out (C)bread and wine; he was (D)the priest of (E)God Most High. 19 And he blessed him and said:

(F)“Blessed be Abram of God Most High,
(G)Possessor of heaven and earth;
20 And (H)blessed be God Most High,
Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.”

And he (I)gave him [a]a tithe of all.

21 Now the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the [b]persons, and take the goods for yourself.”

22 But Abram (J)said to the king of Sodom, “I (K)have raised my hand to the Lord, God Most High, (L)the Possessor of heaven and earth, 23 that (M)I will take nothing, from a thread to a sandal strap, and that I will not take anything that is yours, lest you should say, ‘I have made Abram rich’— 24 except only what the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men who went with me: Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their portion.”

God’s Covenant with Abram(N)

15 After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram (O)in a vision, saying, (P)“Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your (Q)shield, [c]your exceedingly (R)great reward.”

(S)But Abram said, “Lord God, what will You give me, (T)seeing I [d]go childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” Then Abram said, “Look, You have given me no offspring; indeed (U)one[e] born in my house is my heir!”

And behold, the word of the Lord came to him, saying, “This one shall not be your heir, but one who (V)will come from your own body shall be your heir.” Then He brought him outside and said, “Look now toward heaven, and (W)count the (X)stars if you are able to number them.” And He said to him, (Y)“So shall your (Z)descendants be.”

And he (AA)believed in the Lord, and He (AB)accounted it to him for righteousness.

Then He said to him, “I am the Lord, who (AC)brought you out of (AD)Ur of the Chaldeans, (AE)to give you this land to inherit it.”

And he said, “Lord God, (AF)how shall I know that I will inherit it?”

So He said to him, “Bring Me a three-year-old heifer, a three-year-old female goat, a three-year-old ram, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.” 10 Then he brought all these to Him and (AG)cut them in two, down the middle, and placed each piece opposite the other; but he did not cut (AH)the birds in two. 11 And when the vultures came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away.

12 Now when the sun was going down, (AI)a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and behold, horror and great darkness fell upon him. 13 Then He said to Abram: “Know certainly (AJ)that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, and will serve them, and (AK)they will afflict them four hundred years. 14 And also the nation whom they serve (AL)I will judge; afterward (AM)they shall come out with great possessions. 15 Now as for you, (AN)you shall [f]go (AO)to your fathers in peace; (AP)you shall be buried at a good old age. 16 But (AQ)in the fourth generation they shall return here, for the iniquity (AR)of the Amorites (AS)is not yet complete.”

17 And it came to pass, when the sun went down and it was dark, that behold, there appeared a smoking oven and a burning torch that (AT)passed between those pieces. 18 On the same day the Lord (AU)made a covenant with Abram, saying:

(AV)“To your descendants I have given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the River Euphrates— 19 the Kenites, the Kenezzites, the Kadmonites, 20 the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, 21 the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.”

Hagar and Ishmael

16 Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, (AW)had borne him no children. And she had (AX)an Egyptian maidservant whose name was (AY)Hagar. (AZ)So Sarai said to Abram, “See now, the Lord (BA)has restrained me from bearing children. Please, (BB)go in to my maid; perhaps I shall [g]obtain children by her.” And Abram (BC)heeded the voice of Sarai. Then Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar her maid, the Egyptian, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife, after Abram (BD)had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan. So he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. And when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress became (BE)despised in her [h]eyes.

Then Sarai said to Abram, [i]“My wrong be upon you! I gave my maid into your embrace; and when she saw that she had conceived, I became despised in her eyes. (BF)The Lord judge between you and me.”

(BG)So Abram said to Sarai, “Indeed your maid is in your hand; do to her as you please.” And when Sarai dealt harshly with her, (BH)she fled from her presence.

Now the (BI)Angel of the Lord found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, (BJ)by the spring on the way to (BK)Shur. And He said, “Hagar, Sarai’s maid, where have you come from, and where are you going?”

She said, “I am fleeing from the presence of my mistress Sarai.”

The Angel of the Lord said to her, “Return to your mistress, and (BL)submit yourself under her hand.” 10 Then the Angel of the Lord said to her, (BM)“I will multiply your descendants exceedingly, so that they shall not be counted for multitude.” 11 And the Angel of the Lord said to her:

“Behold, you are with child,
(BN)And you shall bear a son.
You shall call his name [j]Ishmael,
Because the Lord has heard your affliction.
12 (BO)He shall be a wild man;
His hand shall be against every man,
And every man’s hand against him.
(BP)And he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.”

13 Then she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, You-Are-[k]the-God-Who-Sees; for she said, “Have I also here [l]seen Him (BQ)who sees me?” 14 Therefore the well was called (BR)Beer Lahai Roi;[m] observe, it is (BS)between Kadesh and Bered.

15 So (BT)Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram named his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael. 16 Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.

The Sign of the Covenant(BU)

17 When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord (BV)appeared to Abram and said to him, (BW)“I am [n]Almighty God; (BX)walk before Me and be (BY)blameless. And I will make My (BZ)covenant between Me and you, and (CA)will multiply you exceedingly.” Then Abram fell on his face, and God talked with him, saying: “As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you, and you shall be (CB)a father of [o]many nations. No longer shall (CC)your name be called [p]Abram, but your name shall be [q]Abraham; (CD)for I have made you a father of [r]many nations. I will make you exceedingly fruitful; and I will make (CE)nations of you, and (CF)kings shall come from you. And I will (CG)establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, (CH)to be God to you and (CI)your descendants after you. Also (CJ)I give to you and your descendants after you the land (CK)in[s] which you are a stranger, all the land of Canaan, as an everlasting possession; and (CL)I will be their God.”

And God said to Abraham: “As for you, (CM)you shall keep My covenant, you and your descendants after you throughout their generations. 10 This is My covenant which you shall keep, between Me and you and your descendants after you: (CN)Every male child among you shall be circumcised; 11 and you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be (CO)a sign of the covenant between Me and you. 12 He who is eight days old among you (CP)shall be circumcised, every male child in your generations, he who is born in your house or bought with money from any foreigner who is not your descendant. 13 He who is born in your house and he who is bought with your money must be circumcised, and My covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant. 14 And the uncircumcised male child, who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, that person (CQ)shall be cut off from his people; he has broken My covenant.”

15 Then God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but [t]Sarah shall be her name. 16 And I will bless her (CR)and also give you a son by her; then I will bless her, and she shall be a mother (CS)of nations; (CT)kings of peoples shall be from her.”

17 Then Abraham fell on his face (CU)and laughed, and said in his heart, “Shall a child be born to a man who is one hundred years old? And shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child? 18 And Abraham (CV)said to God, “Oh, that Ishmael might live before You!”

19 Then God said: “No, (CW)Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac; I will establish My (CX)covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his descendants after him. 20 And as for Ishmael, I have heard you. Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and (CY)will multiply him exceedingly. He shall beget (CZ)twelve princes, (DA)and I will make him a great nation. 21 But My (DB)covenant I will establish with Isaac, (DC)whom Sarah shall bear to you at this (DD)set time next year.” 22 Then He finished talking with him, and God went up from Abraham.

23 So Abraham took Ishmael his son, all who were born in his house and all who were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham’s house, and circumcised the flesh of their foreskins that very same day, as God had said to him. 24 Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. 25 And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. 26 That very same day Abraham was circumcised, and his son Ishmael; 27 and (DE)all the men of his house, born in the house or bought with money from a foreigner, were circumcised with him.

The Son of Promise(DF)

18 Then the Lord appeared to him by [u]the (DG)terebinth trees of Mamre, as he was sitting in the tent door in the heat of the day. (DH)So he lifted his eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing by him; (DI)and when he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them, and bowed himself to the ground, and said, “My Lord, if I have now found favor in Your sight, do not pass on by Your servant. Please let (DJ)a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree. And (DK)I will bring a morsel of bread, that (DL)you may refresh your hearts. After that you may pass by, (DM)inasmuch as you have come to your servant.”

They said, “Do as you have said.”

So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah and said, “Quickly, make ready three measures of fine meal; knead it and make cakes.” And Abraham ran to the herd, took a tender and good calf, gave it to a young man, and he hastened to prepare it. So (DN)he took butter and milk and the calf which he had prepared, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree as they ate.

Then they said to him, “Where is Sarah your wife?”

So he said, “Here, (DO)in the tent.”

10 And He said, “I will certainly return to you (DP)according to the time of life, and behold, (DQ)Sarah your wife shall have a son.”

(Sarah was listening in the tent door which was behind him.) 11 Now (DR)Abraham and Sarah were old, well advanced in age; and [v]Sarah (DS)had passed the age of childbearing. 12 Therefore Sarah (DT)laughed within herself, saying, (DU)“After I have grown old, shall I have pleasure, my (DV)lord being old also?”

13 And the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Shall I surely bear a child, since I am old?’ 14 (DW)Is anything too hard for the Lord? (DX)At the appointed time I will return to you, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.”

15 But Sarah denied it, saying, “I did not laugh,” for she was afraid.

And He said, “No, but you did laugh!”

Abraham Intercedes for Sodom

16 Then the men rose from there and looked toward Sodom, and Abraham went with them (DY)to send them on the way. 17 And the Lord said, (DZ)“Shall I hide from Abraham what I am doing, 18 since Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be (EA)blessed in him? 19 For I have known him, in order (EB)that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the Lord, to do righteousness and justice, that the Lord may bring to Abraham what He has spoken to him.” 20 And the Lord said, “Because (EC)the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their (ED)sin is very grave, 21 (EE)I will go down now and see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry against it that has come to Me; and if not, (EF)I will know.”

22 Then the men turned away from there (EG)and went toward Sodom, but Abraham still stood before the Lord. 23 And Abraham (EH)came near and said, (EI)“Would You also (EJ)destroy the (EK)righteous with the wicked? 24 Suppose there were fifty righteous within the city; would You also destroy the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous that were in it? 25 Far be it from You to do such a thing as this, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so (EL)that the righteous should be as the wicked; far be it from You! (EM)Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?”

26 So the Lord said, (EN)“If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes.”

27 Then Abraham answered and said, “Indeed now, I who am (EO)but dust and ashes have taken it upon myself to speak to the Lord: 28 Suppose there were five less than the fifty righteous; would You destroy all of the city for lack of five?”

So He said, “If I find there forty-five, I will not destroy it.

29 And he spoke to Him yet again and said, “Suppose there should be forty found there?”

So He said, “I will not do it for the sake of forty.”

30 Then he said, “Let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak: Suppose thirty should be found there?”

So He said, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.”

31 And he said, “Indeed now, I have taken it upon myself to speak to the Lord: Suppose twenty should be found there?”

So He said, “I will not destroy it for the sake of twenty.”

32 Then he said, (EP)“Let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak but once more: Suppose ten should be found there?”

(EQ)And He said, “I will not destroy it for the sake of ten.” 33 So the Lord went His way as soon as He had finished speaking with Abraham; and Abraham returned to his place.

Sodom’s Depravity

19 Now (ER)the two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and (ES)Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them, and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground. And he said, “Here now, my lords, please (ET)turn in to your servant’s house and spend the night, and (EU)wash your feet; then you may rise early and go on your way.”

And they said, (EV)“No, but we will spend the night in the open square.”

But he insisted strongly; so they turned in to him and entered his house. (EW)Then he made them a feast, and baked (EX)unleavened bread, and they ate.

Now before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both old and young, all the people from every quarter, surrounded the house. (EY)And they called to Lot and said to him, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? (EZ)Bring them out to us that we (FA)may know them carnally.

So (FB)Lot went out to them through the doorway, shut the door behind him, and said, “Please, my brethren, do not do so wickedly! (FC)See now, I have two daughters who have not known a man; please, let me bring them out to you, and you may do to them as you wish; only do nothing to these men, (FD)since this is the reason they have come under the shadow of my roof.”

And they said, “Stand back!” Then they said, “This one (FE)came in to [w]stay here, (FF)and he keeps acting as a judge; now we will deal worse with you than with them.” So they pressed hard against the man Lot, and came near to break down the door. 10 But the men reached out their hands and pulled Lot into the house with them, and shut the door. 11 And they (FG)struck the men who were at the doorway of the house with blindness, both small and great, so that they became weary trying to find the door.

Sodom and Gomorrah Destroyed(FH)

12 Then the men said to Lot, “Have you anyone else here? Son-in-law, your sons, your daughters, and whomever you have in the city—(FI)take them out of this place! 13 For we will destroy this place, because the (FJ)outcry against them has grown great before the face of the Lord, and (FK)the Lord has sent us to destroy it.”

14 So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, (FL)who had married his daughters, and said, (FM)“Get up, get out of this place; for the Lord will destroy this city!” (FN)But to his sons-in-law he seemed to be joking.

15 When the morning dawned, the angels urged Lot to hurry, saying, (FO)“Arise, take your wife and your two daughters who are here, lest you be consumed in the punishment of the city.” 16 And while he lingered, the men (FP)took hold of his hand, his wife’s hand, and the hands of his two daughters, the (FQ)Lord being merciful to him, (FR)and they brought him out and set him outside the city. 17 So it came to pass, when they had brought them outside, that [x]he said, (FS)“Escape for your life! (FT)Do not look behind you nor stay anywhere in the plain. Escape (FU)to the mountains, lest you be [y]destroyed.”

18 Then Lot said to them, “Please, (FV)no, my lords!

18 Then Melchizedek(A) king of Salem(B) brought out bread(C) and wine.(D) He was priest of God Most High,(E) 19 and he blessed Abram,(F) saying,

“Blessed be Abram by God Most High,(G)
    Creator of heaven and earth.(H)
20 And praise be to God Most High,(I)
who delivered your enemies into your hand.”

Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.(J)

21 The king of Sodom(K) said to Abram, “Give me the people and keep the goods(L) for yourself.”

22 But Abram said to the king of Sodom,(M) “With raised hand(N) I have sworn an oath to the Lord, God Most High,(O) Creator of heaven and earth,(P) 23 that I will accept nothing belonging to you,(Q) not even a thread or the strap of a sandal, so that you will never be able to say, ‘I made Abram rich.’ 24 I will accept nothing but what my men have eaten and the share that belongs to the men who went with me—to Aner, Eshkol and Mamre.(R) Let them have their share.”

The Lord’s Covenant With Abram

15 After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram(S) in a vision:(T)

“Do not be afraid,(U) Abram.
    I am your shield,[a](V)
    your very great reward.[b](W)

But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord,(X) what can you give me since I remain childless(Y) and the one who will inherit[c] my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?(Z) And Abram said, “You have given me no children; so a servant(AA) in my household(AB) will be my heir.”

Then the word of the Lord came to him: “This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.(AC) He took him outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars(AD)—if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring[d] be.”(AE)

Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.(AF)

He also said to him, “I am the Lord, who brought you out(AG) of Ur of the Chaldeans(AH) to give you this land to take possession of it.”(AI)

But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord,(AJ) how can I know(AK) that I will gain possession of it?”(AL)

So the Lord said to him, “Bring me a heifer,(AM) a goat and a ram, each three years old,(AN) along with a dove and a young pigeon.(AO)

10 Abram brought all these to him, cut them in two and arranged the halves opposite each other;(AP) the birds, however, he did not cut in half.(AQ) 11 Then birds of prey came down on the carcasses,(AR) but Abram drove them away.

12 As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep,(AS) and a thick and dreadful darkness came over him. 13 Then the Lord said to him, “Know for certain that for four hundred years(AT) your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own and that they will be enslaved(AU) and mistreated there. 14 But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out(AV) with great possessions.(AW) 15 You, however, will go to your ancestors(AX) in peace and be buried at a good old age.(AY) 16 In the fourth generation(AZ) your descendants will come back here,(BA) for the sin of the Amorites(BB) has not yet reached its full measure.”

17 When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch(BC) appeared and passed between the pieces.(BD) 18 On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram(BE) and said, “To your descendants I give this land,(BF) from the Wadi[e] of Egypt(BG) to the great river, the Euphrates(BH) 19 the land of the Kenites,(BI) Kenizzites, Kadmonites, 20 Hittites,(BJ) Perizzites,(BK) Rephaites,(BL) 21 Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites and Jebusites.”(BM)

Hagar and Ishmael

16 Now Sarai,(BN) Abram’s wife, had borne him no children.(BO) But she had an Egyptian slave(BP) named Hagar;(BQ) so she said to Abram, “The Lord has kept me from having children.(BR) Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her.”(BS)

Abram agreed to what Sarai said. So after Abram had been living in Canaan(BT) ten years,(BU) Sarai his wife took her Egyptian slave Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife. He slept with Hagar,(BV) and she conceived.

When she knew she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress.(BW) Then Sarai said to Abram, “You are responsible for the wrong I am suffering. I put my slave in your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, she despises me. May the Lord judge between you and me.”(BX)

“Your slave is in your hands,(BY)” Abram said. “Do with her whatever you think best.” Then Sarai mistreated(BZ) Hagar; so she fled from her.

The angel of the Lord(CA) found Hagar near a spring(CB) in the desert; it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur.(CC) And he said, “Hagar,(CD) slave of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?”(CE)

“I’m running away from my mistress Sarai,” she answered.

Then the angel of the Lord told her, “Go back to your mistress and submit to her.” 10 The angel added, “I will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count.”(CF)

11 The angel of the Lord(CG) also said to her:

“You are now pregnant
and you will give birth to a son.(CH)
You shall name him(CI) Ishmael,[f](CJ)
for the Lord has heard of your misery.(CK)
12 He will be a wild donkey(CL) of a man;
his hand will be against everyone
    and everyone’s hand against him,
and he will live in hostility
    toward[g] all his brothers.(CM)

13 She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,(CN)” for she said, “I have now seen[h] the One who sees me.”(CO) 14 That is why the well(CP) was called Beer Lahai Roi[i];(CQ) it is still there, between Kadesh(CR) and Bered.

15 So Hagar(CS) bore Abram a son,(CT) and Abram gave the name Ishmael(CU) to the son she had borne. 16 Abram was eighty-six years old(CV) when Hagar bore him Ishmael.

The Covenant of Circumcision

17 When Abram was ninety-nine years old,(CW) the Lord appeared to him(CX) and said, “I am God Almighty[j];(CY) walk before me faithfully and be blameless.(CZ) Then I will make my covenant between me and you(DA) and will greatly increase your numbers.”(DB)

Abram fell facedown,(DC) and God said to him, “As for me, this is my covenant with you:(DD) You will be the father of many nations.(DE) No longer will you be called Abram[k]; your name will be Abraham,[l](DF) for I have made you a father of many nations.(DG) I will make you very fruitful;(DH) I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you.(DI) I will establish my covenant(DJ) as an everlasting covenant(DK) between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God(DL) and the God of your descendants after you.(DM) The whole land of Canaan,(DN) where you now reside as a foreigner,(DO) I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you;(DP) and I will be their God.(DQ)

Then God said to Abraham, “As for you, you must keep my covenant,(DR) you and your descendants after you for the generations to come.(DS) 10 This is my covenant with you and your descendants after you, the covenant you are to keep: Every male among you shall be circumcised.(DT) 11 You are to undergo circumcision,(DU) and it will be the sign of the covenant(DV) between me and you. 12 For the generations to come(DW) every male among you who is eight days old must be circumcised,(DX) including those born in your household or bought with money from a foreigner—those who are not your offspring. 13 Whether born in your household or bought with your money, they must be circumcised.(DY) My covenant in your flesh is to be an everlasting covenant.(DZ) 14 Any uncircumcised male, who has not been circumcised(EA) in the flesh, will be cut off from his people;(EB) he has broken my covenant.(EC)

15 God also said to Abraham, “As for Sarai(ED) your wife, you are no longer to call her Sarai; her name will be Sarah.(EE) 16 I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her.(EF) I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations;(EG) kings of peoples will come from her.”

17 Abraham fell facedown;(EH) he laughed(EI) and said to himself, “Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old?(EJ) Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?”(EK) 18 And Abraham said to God, “If only Ishmael(EL) might live under your blessing!”(EM)

19 Then God said, “Yes, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son,(EN) and you will call him Isaac.[m](EO) I will establish my covenant with him(EP) as an everlasting covenant(EQ) for his descendants after him. 20 And as for Ishmael, I have heard you: I will surely bless him; I will make him fruitful and will greatly increase his numbers.(ER) He will be the father of twelve rulers,(ES) and I will make him into a great nation.(ET) 21 But my covenant(EU) I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you(EV) by this time next year.”(EW) 22 When he had finished speaking with Abraham, God went up from him.(EX)

23 On that very day Abraham took his son Ishmael and all those born in his household(EY) or bought with his money, every male in his household, and circumcised them, as God told him.(EZ) 24 Abraham was ninety-nine years old(FA) when he was circumcised,(FB) 25 and his son Ishmael(FC) was thirteen; 26 Abraham and his son Ishmael were both circumcised on that very day. 27 And every male in Abraham’s household(FD), including those born in his household or bought from a foreigner, was circumcised with him.

The Three Visitors

18 The Lord appeared to Abraham(FE) near the great trees of Mamre(FF) while he was sitting at the entrance to his tent(FG) in the heat of the day. Abraham looked up(FH) and saw three men(FI) standing nearby. When he saw them, he hurried from the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low to the ground.(FJ)

He said, “If I have found favor in your eyes,(FK) my lord,[n] do not pass your servant(FL) by. Let a little water be brought, and then you may all wash your feet(FM) and rest under this tree. Let me get you something to eat,(FN) so you can be refreshed and then go on your way—now that you have come to your servant.”

“Very well,” they answered, “do as you say.”

So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah. “Quick,” he said, “get three seahs[o] of the finest flour and knead it and bake some bread.”(FO)

Then he ran to the herd and selected a choice, tender calf(FP) and gave it to a servant, who hurried to prepare it. He then brought some curds(FQ) and milk(FR) and the calf that had been prepared, and set these before them.(FS) While they ate, he stood near them under a tree.

“Where is your wife Sarah?”(FT) they asked him.

“There, in the tent,(FU)” he said.

10 Then one of them said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year,(FV) and Sarah your wife will have a son.”(FW)

Now Sarah was listening at the entrance to the tent, which was behind him. 11 Abraham and Sarah were already very old,(FX) and Sarah was past the age of childbearing.(FY) 12 So Sarah laughed(FZ) to herself as she thought, “After I am worn out and my lord(GA) is old, will I now have this pleasure?”

13 Then the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Will I really have a child, now that I am old?’(GB) 14 Is anything too hard for the Lord?(GC) I will return to you at the appointed time next year,(GD) and Sarah will have a son.”(GE)

15 Sarah was afraid, so she lied and said, “I did not laugh.”

But he said, “Yes, you did laugh.”

Abraham Pleads for Sodom

16 When the men(GF) got up to leave, they looked down toward Sodom, and Abraham walked along with them to see them on their way. 17 Then the Lord said, “Shall I hide from Abraham(GG) what I am about to do?(GH) 18 Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation,(GI) and all nations on earth will be blessed through him.[p] 19 For I have chosen him(GJ), so that he will direct his children(GK) and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord(GL) by doing what is right and just,(GM) so that the Lord will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him.”(GN)

20 Then the Lord said, “The outcry against Sodom(GO) and Gomorrah is so great(GP) and their sin so grievous(GQ) 21 that I will go down(GR) and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached me. If not, I will know.”

22 The men(GS) turned away and went toward Sodom,(GT) but Abraham remained standing before the Lord.[q](GU) 23 Then Abraham approached him and said: “Will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked?(GV) 24 What if there are fifty righteous people in the city? Will you really sweep it away and not spare[r] the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people in it?(GW) 25 Far be it from you to do such a thing(GX)—to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous(GY) and the wicked alike.(GZ) Far be it from you! Will not the Judge(HA) of all the earth do right?”(HB)

26 The Lord said, “If I find fifty righteous people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake.(HC)

27 Then Abraham spoke up again: “Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, though I am nothing but dust and ashes,(HD) 28 what if the number of the righteous is five less than fifty? Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five people?”

“If I find forty-five there,” he said, “I will not destroy it.”

29 Once again he spoke to him, “What if only forty are found there?”

He said, “For the sake of forty, I will not do it.”

30 Then he said, “May the Lord not be angry,(HE) but let me speak. What if only thirty can be found there?”

He answered, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.”

31 Abraham said, “Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, what if only twenty can be found there?”

He said, “For the sake of twenty, I will not destroy it.”

32 Then he said, “May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak just once more.(HF) What if only ten can be found there?”

He answered, “For the sake of ten,(HG) I will not destroy it.”

33 When the Lord had finished speaking(HH) with Abraham, he left,(HI) and Abraham returned home.(HJ)

Sodom and Gomorrah Destroyed

19 The two angels(HK) arrived at Sodom(HL) in the evening, and Lot(HM) was sitting in the gateway of the city.(HN) When he saw them, he got up to meet them and bowed down with his face to the ground.(HO) “My lords,” he said, “please turn aside to your servant’s house. You can wash your feet(HP) and spend the night and then go on your way early in the morning.”

“No,” they answered, “we will spend the night in the square.”(HQ)

But he insisted(HR) so strongly that they did go with him and entered his house.(HS) He prepared a meal for them, baking bread without yeast,(HT) and they ate.(HU) Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom(HV)—both young and old—surrounded the house. They called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them.”(HW)

Lot went outside to meet them(HX) and shut the door behind him and said, “No, my friends. Don’t do this wicked thing. Look, I have two daughters who have never slept with a man. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do what you like with them. But don’t do anything to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof.”(HY)

“Get out of our way,” they replied. “This fellow came here as a foreigner,(HZ) and now he wants to play the judge!(IA) We’ll treat you worse than them.” They kept bringing pressure on Lot and moved forward to break down the door.

10 But the men(IB) inside reached out and pulled Lot back into the house and shut the door. 11 Then they struck the men who were at the door of the house, young and old, with blindness(IC) so that they could not find the door.

12 The two men said to Lot, “Do you have anyone else here—sons-in-law, sons or daughters, or anyone else in the city who belongs to you?(ID) Get them out of here, 13 because we(IE) are going to destroy this place. The outcry to the Lord against its people is so great(IF) that he has sent us to destroy it.”(IG)

14 So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were pledged to marry[s] his daughters. He said, “Hurry and get out of this place, because the Lord is about to destroy the city!(IH)” But his sons-in-law thought he was joking.(II)

15 With the coming of dawn, the angels urged Lot, saying, “Hurry! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away(IJ) when the city is punished.(IK)

16 When he hesitated, the men grasped his hand and the hands of his wife and of his two daughters(IL) and led them safely out of the city, for the Lord was merciful to them.(IM) 17 As soon as they had brought them out, one of them said, “Flee for your lives!(IN) Don’t look back,(IO) and don’t stop anywhere in the plain!(IP) Flee to the mountains(IQ) or you will be swept away!”

18 But Lot said to them, “No, my lords,[t] please!
