Abram Blessed by Melchizedek
17 After his return from the defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the (A)King's Valley). 18 And (B)Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. (He was (C)priest of (D)God Most High.) 19 And he blessed him and said,
(E)“Blessed be Abram by God Most High,
(F)Possessor[a] of heaven and earth;
20 and blessed be God Most High,
who has delivered your enemies into your hand!”
And Abram gave him (G)a tenth of everything. 21 And the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the persons, but take the goods for yourself.” 22 But Abram said to the king of Sodom, (H)“I have lifted my hand[b] to the Lord, God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth, 23 that (I)I would not take a thread or a sandal strap or anything that is yours, lest you should say, ‘I have made Abram rich.’ 24 I will take nothing but what the young men have eaten, and the share of the men who went with me. Let (J)Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre take their share.”
God's Covenant with Abram
15 After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: (K)“Fear not, Abram, I am (L)your shield; your reward shall be very great.” 2 But Abram said, “O Lord God, what will you give me, for I continue[c] childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” 3 And Abram said, “Behold, you have given me no offspring, and (M)a member of my household will be my heir.” 4 And behold, the word of the Lord came to him: “This man shall not be your heir; (N)your very own son[d] shall be your heir.” 5 And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and (O)number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, (P)“So shall your offspring be.” 6 And (Q)he believed the Lord, and (R)he counted it to him as righteousness.
7 And he said to him, “I am the Lord who (S)brought you out from Ur of the Chaldeans (T)to give you this land to possess.” 8 But he said, “O Lord God, (U)how am I to know that I shall possess it?” 9 He said to him, “Bring me a heifer three years old, a female goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.” 10 And he brought him all these, (V)cut them in half, and laid each half over against the other. But (W)he did not cut the birds in half. 11 And when birds of prey came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away.
12 As the sun was going down, a (X)deep sleep fell on Abram. And behold, dreadful and great darkness fell upon him. 13 Then the Lord said to Abram, “Know for certain (Y)that your offspring will be sojourners in a land that is not theirs and will be servants there, and (Z)they will be afflicted for (AA)four hundred years. 14 But (AB)I will bring judgment on the nation that they serve, and afterward (AC)they shall come out with great possessions. 15 As for you, you shall go to your fathers in peace; (AD)you shall be buried in a good old age. 16 And they shall come back here in the fourth generation, for (AE)the iniquity of the Amorites (AF)is not yet complete.”
17 When the sun had gone down and it was dark, behold, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces. 18 On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, (AG)“To your offspring I give[e] this land, from (AH)the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates, 19 the land of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites, 20 the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, 21 the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites and the Jebusites.”
Sarai and Hagar
16 (AI)Now Sarai, Abram's wife, had borne him no children. She had a female Egyptian servant whose name was (AJ)Hagar. 2 And Sarai said to Abram, “Behold now, the Lord has prevented me from bearing children. Go in to my servant; it may be that I shall obtain children[f] by her.” And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai. 3 So, after Abram (AK)had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, Sarai, Abram's wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her servant, and gave her to Abram her husband as a wife. 4 And he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. And when she saw that she had conceived, (AL)she looked with contempt on her mistress.[g] 5 And Sarai said to Abram, “May the wrong done to me be on you! I gave my servant to your embrace, and when she saw that she had conceived, she looked on me with contempt. May (AM)the Lord judge between you and me!” 6 But Abram said to Sarai, “Behold, your servant is in your power; do to her as you please.” Then Sarai dealt harshly with her, and she fled from her.

17 After Abram returned from defeating Kedorlaomer(A) and the kings allied with him, the king of Sodom(B) came out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley).(C)
18 Then Melchizedek(D) king of Salem(E) brought out bread(F) and wine.(G) He was priest of God Most High,(H) 19 and he blessed Abram,(I) saying,
“Blessed be Abram by God Most High,(J)
Creator of heaven and earth.(K)
20 And praise be to God Most High,(L)
who delivered your enemies into your hand.”
Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.(M)
21 The king of Sodom(N) said to Abram, “Give me the people and keep the goods(O) for yourself.”
22 But Abram said to the king of Sodom,(P) “With raised hand(Q) I have sworn an oath to the Lord, God Most High,(R) Creator of heaven and earth,(S) 23 that I will accept nothing belonging to you,(T) not even a thread or the strap of a sandal, so that you will never be able to say, ‘I made Abram rich.’ 24 I will accept nothing but what my men have eaten and the share that belongs to the men who went with me—to Aner, Eshkol and Mamre.(U) Let them have their share.”
The Lord’s Covenant With Abram
15 After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram(V) in a vision:(W)
2 But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord,(AA) what can you give me since I remain childless(AB) and the one who will inherit[c] my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?(AC)” 3 And Abram said, “You have given me no children; so a servant(AD) in my household(AE) will be my heir.”
4 Then the word of the Lord came to him: “This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.(AF)” 5 He took him outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars(AG)—if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring[d] be.”(AH)
6 Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.(AI)
7 He also said to him, “I am the Lord, who brought you out(AJ) of Ur of the Chaldeans(AK) to give you this land to take possession of it.”(AL)
8 But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord,(AM) how can I know(AN) that I will gain possession of it?”(AO)
9 So the Lord said to him, “Bring me a heifer,(AP) a goat and a ram, each three years old,(AQ) along with a dove and a young pigeon.(AR)”
10 Abram brought all these to him, cut them in two and arranged the halves opposite each other;(AS) the birds, however, he did not cut in half.(AT) 11 Then birds of prey came down on the carcasses,(AU) but Abram drove them away.
12 As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep,(AV) and a thick and dreadful darkness came over him. 13 Then the Lord said to him, “Know for certain that for four hundred years(AW) your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own and that they will be enslaved(AX) and mistreated there. 14 But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out(AY) with great possessions.(AZ) 15 You, however, will go to your ancestors(BA) in peace and be buried at a good old age.(BB) 16 In the fourth generation(BC) your descendants will come back here,(BD) for the sin of the Amorites(BE) has not yet reached its full measure.”
17 When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch(BF) appeared and passed between the pieces.(BG) 18 On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram(BH) and said, “To your descendants I give this land,(BI) from the Wadi[e] of Egypt(BJ) to the great river, the Euphrates(BK)— 19 the land of the Kenites,(BL) Kenizzites, Kadmonites, 20 Hittites,(BM) Perizzites,(BN) Rephaites,(BO) 21 Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites and Jebusites.”(BP)
Hagar and Ishmael
16 Now Sarai,(BQ) Abram’s wife, had borne him no children.(BR) But she had an Egyptian slave(BS) named Hagar;(BT) 2 so she said to Abram, “The Lord has kept me from having children.(BU) Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her.”(BV)
Abram agreed to what Sarai said. 3 So after Abram had been living in Canaan(BW) ten years,(BX) Sarai his wife took her Egyptian slave Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife. 4 He slept with Hagar,(BY) and she conceived.
When she knew she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress.(BZ) 5 Then Sarai said to Abram, “You are responsible for the wrong I am suffering. I put my slave in your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, she despises me. May the Lord judge between you and me.”(CA)
6 “Your slave is in your hands,(CB)” Abram said. “Do with her whatever you think best.” Then Sarai mistreated(CC) Hagar; so she fled from her.

18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.
19 And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth:
20 And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.
21 And the king of Sodom said unto Abram, Give me the persons, and take the goods to thyself.
22 And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lift up mine hand unto the Lord, the most high God, the possessor of heaven and earth,
23 That I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich:
24 Save only that which the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men which went with me, Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their portion.
15 After these things the word of the Lord came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.
2 And Abram said, Lord God, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus?
3 And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir.
4 And, behold, the word of the Lord came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir.
5 And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.
6 And he believed in the Lord; and he counted it to him for righteousness.
7 And he said unto him, I am the Lord that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land to inherit it.
8 And he said, Lord God, whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it?
9 And he said unto him, Take me an heifer of three years old, and a she goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon.
10 And he took unto him all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid each piece one against another: but the birds divided he not.
11 And when the fowls came down upon the carcases, Abram drove them away.
12 And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, an horror of great darkness fell upon him.
13 And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years;
14 And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance.
15 And thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age.
16 But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full.
17 And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces.
18 In the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:
19 The Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites,
20 And the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Rephaims,
21 And the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.
16 Now Sarai Abram's wife bare him no children: and she had an handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar.
2 And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the Lord hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.
3 And Sarai Abram's wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife.
4 And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived: and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.
5 And Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I have given my maid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the Lord judge between me and thee.
6 But Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy maid is in thine hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee. And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face.
