Genesis 12:1-4

The Call of Abram

12 The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household^(A) to the land^(B) I will show you.^(C)

²“I will make you into a great nation,^(D)
    and I will bless you;^(E)
I will make your name great,
    and you will be a blessing.^[a]^(F)
³I will bless those who bless you,
    and whoever curses you I will curse;^(G)
and all peoples on earth
    will be blessed through you.^(H)”^[b]

⁴So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot^(I) went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old^(J) when he set out from Harran.^(K)

A song of ascents.

¹I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
where does my help come from?
²My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven^(A) and earth.^(B)

³He will not let your foot slip—
he who watches over you will not slumber;
⁴indeed, he who watches^(C) over Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.

⁵The Lord watches over^(D) you—
the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
⁶the sun^(E) will not harm you by day,
nor the moon by night.

⁷The Lord will keep you from all harm^(F)—
he will watch over your life;
⁸the Lord will watch over your coming and going
both now and forevermore.^(G)

Romans 4:1-5

Abraham Justified by Faith

4 What then shall we say^(A) that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh,^(B) discovered in this matter? ²If, in fact, Abraham was justified by works, he had something to boast about—but not before God.^(C) ³What does Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”^[a]^(D)

⁴Now to the one who works, wages are not credited as a gift^(E) but as an obligation. ⁵However, to the one who does not work but trusts God who justifies the ungodly, their faith is credited as righteousness.^(F)
