Genesis 9:18-29

Noah's Descendants

¹⁸The sons of Noah who went forth from the ark were ^(A)Shem, Ham, and Japheth. (Ham was the father of Canaan.) ¹⁹These three were the sons of Noah, and ^(B)from these the people of the whole earth were dispersed.^[a]

²⁰Noah began to be a man of the soil, and he planted a vineyard.^[b] ²¹He drank of the wine and became drunk and lay uncovered in his tent. ²²And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father and told his two brothers outside. ²³Then Shem and Japheth took a garment, laid it on both their shoulders, and walked backward and covered the nakedness of their father. Their faces were turned backward, and they did not see their father's nakedness. ²⁴When Noah awoke from his wine ^(C)and knew what his youngest son had done to him, ²⁵he said,

^(D)“Cursed be Canaan;
^(E)a servant of servants shall he be to his brothers.”

²⁶He also said,

“Blessed be the Lord, the God of Shem;
    and let Canaan be his servant.
²⁷May God enlarge Japheth,^[c]
    and let him dwell in the tents of Shem,
    and let Canaan be his servant.”

²⁸After the flood Noah lived 350 years. ²⁹All the days of Noah were 950 years, and he died.

Joshua 11:1-15

Conquests in Northern Canaan

11 When Jabin, king of Hazor, heard of this, he ^(A)sent to Jobab king of Madon, and to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph, ²and to the kings who were in the northern hill country, and in the ^(B)Arabah south of ^(C)Chinneroth, and in the lowland, and ^(D)in Naphoth-dor on the ^(E)west, ³to the Canaanites in the east and the west, the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, and the ^(F)Jebusites in the hill country, and the ^(G)Hivites under ^(H)Hermon in the land of ^(I)Mizpah. ⁴And they came out with all their troops, a great horde, in number ^(J)like the sand that is on the seashore, with very many horses and chariots. ⁵And all these kings joined their forces and came and encamped together at the waters of Merom to fight against Israel.

⁶And the Lord said to Joshua, ^(K)“Do not be afraid of them, for tomorrow at this time I will give over all of them, slain, to Israel. You shall ^(L)hamstring their horses and burn their ^(M)chariots with fire.” ⁷So Joshua and all his warriors came ^(N)suddenly against them by the waters of Merom and fell upon them. ⁸And the Lord gave them into the hand of Israel, who struck them and chased them as far as ^(O)Great Sidon and ^(P)Misrephoth-maim, and eastward as far as the Valley of ^(Q)Mizpeh. And they struck them until he left none remaining. ⁹And Joshua did to them ^(R)just as the Lord said to him: he hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots with fire.

¹⁰And Joshua turned back at that time and captured ^(S)Hazor and struck its king with the sword, for Hazor formerly was the head of all those kingdoms. ¹¹And they struck with the sword all who were in it, devoting them to destruction;^[a] ^(T)there was none left that breathed. And he burned Hazor with fire. ¹²And all the cities of those kings, and all their kings, Joshua captured, and struck them with the edge of the sword, devoting them to destruction, ^(U)just as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded. ¹³But none of the cities that stood on mounds did Israel burn, except Hazor alone; that Joshua burned. ¹⁴And all the spoil of these cities and the livestock, the people of Israel took for their plunder. But every person they struck with the edge of the sword until they had destroyed them, and they did not leave any who breathed. ¹⁵^(V)Just as the Lord had commanded Moses his servant, ^(W)so Moses commanded Joshua, ^(X)and so Joshua did. He left nothing undone of all that the Lord had commanded Moses.

    and the writers who ^(B)keep writing oppression,
²to turn aside the needy from justice
    and ^(C)to rob the poor of my people of their right,
that widows may be their spoil,
    and that they may make the fatherless their prey!
³What will you do on ^(D)the day of punishment,
    in the ruin that will come ^(E)from afar?
To whom will you flee for help,
    and where will you leave your wealth?
⁴Nothing remains but to crouch among the prisoners
    or fall among the slain.
^(F)For all this his anger has not turned away,
    and his hand is stretched out still.

Judgment on Arrogant Assyria

⁵Woe to Assyria, ^(G)the rod of my anger;
    the staff in their hands is my fury!
⁶Against a ^(H)godless nation I send him,
    and against the people of my wrath I command him,
to take ^(I)spoil and seize plunder,
    and to ^(J)tread them down like the mire of the streets.
⁷But he ^(K)does not so intend,
    and his heart does not so think;
but it is in his heart to destroy,
    and to cut off nations not a few;
⁸for he says:
^(L)“Are not my commanders all kings?
⁹^(M)Is not ^(N)Calno like ^(O)Carchemish?
    Is not ^(P)Hamath like ^(Q)Arpad?
    ^(R)Is not ^(S)Samaria like Damascus?
¹⁰As my hand has reached to ^(T)the kingdoms of the idols,
    whose carved images were greater than those of Jerusalem and Samaria,
¹¹shall I not do to Jerusalem and ^(U)her idols
    ^(V)as I have done to Samaria and her images?”

¹²^(W)When the Lord has finished all his work on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, ^(X)he^[a] will punish the speech^[b] of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria and the boastful look in his eyes. ¹³^(Y)For he says:

“By the strength of my hand I have done it,
    and by my wisdom, for I have understanding;
I remove the boundaries of peoples,
    and plunder their treasures;
    like a bull I bring down those who sit on thrones.
¹⁴My hand has found like a nest
    the wealth of the peoples;
and as one gathers eggs that have been forsaken,
    so I have gathered all the earth;
and there was none that moved a wing
    or opened the mouth or chirped.”

¹⁵Shall ^(Z)the axe boast over him who hews with it,
    or the saw magnify itself against him who wields it?
As if a rod should wield him who lifts it,
    or as if a staff should lift him who is not wood!
¹⁶Therefore the Lord God of hosts
    will send wasting sickness among his ^(AA)stout warriors,
and under his glory ^(AB)a burning will be kindled,
    like the burning of fire.
¹⁷^(AC)The light of Israel will become a fire,
    and ^(AD)his Holy One a flame,
and ^(AE)it will burn and devour
    his thorns and briers ^(AF)in one day.
¹⁸The glory of ^(AG)his forest and of his ^(AH)fruitful land
    the Lord will destroy, both soul and body,
    and it will be as when a sick man wastes away.
¹⁹The remnant of the trees of his forest will be so few
    that a child can write them down.

Bildad Speaks: Job Should Repent

8 Then ^(A)Bildad the Shuhite answered and said:

²“How long will you say these things,
    and the words of your mouth be a ^(B)great wind?
³^(C)Does God pervert justice?
    Or does the Almighty pervert the right?
⁴If your ^(D)children have sinned against him,
    he has delivered them into the hand of their transgression.
⁵If you will seek God
    and ^(E)plead with the Almighty for mercy,
⁶if you are pure and upright,
    surely then he will ^(F)rouse himself for you
    and ^(G)restore your rightful habitation.
⁷And though your beginning was small,
    ^(H)your latter days will be very great.

⁸“For ^(I)inquire, please, of bygone ages,
    and consider what ^(J)the fathers have searched out.
⁹For we are but of yesterday and know nothing,
    for our days on earth are ^(K)a shadow.
¹⁰Will they not teach you and tell you
    and utter words out of their understanding?

¹¹“Can papyrus grow where there is no marsh?
    Can reeds flourish where there is no water?
¹²While yet in flower and not cut down,
    they ^(L)wither before any other plant.
¹³Such are the paths of all who ^(M)forget God;
    ^(N)the hope of ^(O)the godless shall perish.
¹⁴His confidence is severed,
    and his trust is ^(P)a spider's web.^[a]
¹⁵He leans against his ^(Q)house, but it does not stand;
    he lays hold of it, but it does not endure.
¹⁶He is a lush plant before the sun,
    and his ^(R)shoots spread over his garden.
¹⁷His roots entwine the stone heap;
    he looks upon a house of stones.
¹⁸If he is destroyed from his ^(S)place,
    then it will deny him, saying, ‘I have never ^(T)seen you.’
¹⁹Behold, this is the joy of his way,
    and out of ^(U)the soil others will spring.

²⁰“Behold, God will not reject a blameless man,
    nor take the hand of evildoers.
²¹He will yet ^(V)fill your mouth with laughter,
    and your lips with shouting.
²²Those who hate you will be ^(W)clothed with shame,
    and the tent of the wicked will be no more.”

Love Your Enemies

For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and ^(F)sends rain on the just and on the unjust. ⁴⁶^(G)For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? ⁴⁷And if you greet only your brothers,^[a] what more are you doing than others? Do not even ^(H)the Gentiles do the same? ⁴⁸^(I)You therefore must be ^(J)perfect, ^(K)as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Giving to the Needy

6 “Beware of ^(L)practicing your righteousness before other people in order ^(M)to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.

²^(N)“Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may ^(O)be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have ^(P)received their reward. ³But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, ⁴so that your giving may be in secret. ^(Q)And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Many Signs and Wonders Done

¹²Now many signs and wonders were regularly done among the people ^(A)by the hands of the apostles. And they were all ^(B)together in ^(C)Solomon's Portico. ¹³None of the rest dared join them, but ^(D)the people held them in high esteem. ¹⁴And ^(E)more than ever believers were added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women, ¹⁵^(F)so that they even ^(G)carried out the sick into the streets and laid them on cots and mats, that as Peter came by ^(H)at least his shadow might fall on some of them. ¹⁶The people also gathered from the towns around Jerusalem, ^(I)bringing the sick and those afflicted with unclean spirits, and they were all healed.
