27 Thus Israel settled in the land of Egypt, (A)in the land of Goshen. (B)And they gained possessions in it, and were fruitful and multiplied greatly. 28 And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years. (C)So the days of Jacob, the years of his life, were 147 years.
29 And (D)when the time drew near that Israel must die, he called his son Joseph and said to him, “If now (E)I have found favor in your sight, (F)put your hand under my thigh and (G)promise to deal kindly and truly with me. (H)Do not bury me in Egypt, 30 but let me lie with my fathers. Carry me out of Egypt and (I)bury me in their burying place.” He answered, “I will do as you have said.” 31 And he said, “Swear to me”; and he swore to him. Then (J)Israel bowed himself upon the head of his bed.[a]

I have performed the commandment of the Lord.” 14 And Samuel said, “What then is this bleating of the sheep in my ears and the lowing of the oxen that I hear?” 15 Saul said, “They have brought them from the Amalekites, (E)for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen to sacrifice to the Lord your God, and the rest we have devoted to destruction.” 16 Then Samuel said to Saul, “Stop! I will tell you what the Lord said to me this night.” And he said to him, “Speak.”
17 And Samuel said, (F)“Though you are little in your own eyes, are you not the head of the tribes of Israel? The Lord anointed you king over Israel. 18 And the Lord sent you on a mission and said, ‘Go, devote to destruction the sinners, the Amalekites, and fight against them until they are consumed.’ 19 Why then did you not obey the voice of the Lord? (G)Why did you pounce on the spoil and do what was evil in the sight of the Lord?” 20 And Saul said to Samuel, (H)“I have obeyed the voice of the Lord. I have gone on the mission on which the Lord sent me. I have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and I have devoted the Amalekites to destruction. 21 (I)But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the best of the things devoted to destruction, to sacrifice to the Lord your God in Gilgal.” 22 And Samuel said,
(J)“Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices,
as in obeying the voice of the Lord?
Behold, (K)to obey is better than sacrifice,
and to listen than the fat of rams.
23 For rebellion is as the sin of divination,
and presumption is as iniquity and (L)idolatry.
Because (M)you have rejected the word of the Lord,
(N)he has also rejected you from being king.”
24 Saul said to Samuel, (O)“I have sinned, for I have transgressed the commandment of the Lord and your words, because I feared the people and obeyed their voice. 25 Now therefore, please pardon my sin and (P)return with me that I may bow before the Lord.” 26 And Samuel said to Saul, “I will not return with you. (Q)For you have rejected the word of the Lord, (R)and the Lord has rejected you from being king over Israel.” 27 (S)As Samuel turned to go away, Saul seized the skirt of his robe, and it tore. 28 And Samuel said to him, (T)“The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel from you this day and has given it to a neighbor of yours, who is better than you. 29 And also the Glory of Israel (U)will not lie or have regret, for he is not a man, that he should have regret.” 30 Then he said, “I have sinned; yet (V)honor me now before the elders of my people and before Israel, (W)and return with me, that I may bow before the Lord your God.” 31 So Samuel turned back after Saul, and Saul bowed before the Lord.
32 Then Samuel said, “Bring here to me Agag the king of the Amalekites.” And Agag came to him cheerfully.[b] Agag said, “Surely the bitterness of death is past.” 33 And Samuel said, (X)“As your sword has made women childless, so shall your mother be childless among women.” And Samuel hacked Agag to pieces before the Lord (Y)in Gilgal.
34 Then Samuel went (Z)to Ramah, and Saul went up to his house in (AA)Gibeah of Saul. 35 (AB)And Samuel did not see Saul again until the day of his death, (AC)but Samuel grieved over Saul. (AD)And the Lord regretted that he had made Saul king over Israel.

10 Then the word of the Lord came to Samuel: 11 “I regret(A) that I have made Saul king, because he has turned(B) away from me and has not carried out my instructions.”(C) Samuel was angry,(D) and he cried out to the Lord all that night.
12 Early in the morning Samuel got up and went to meet Saul, but he was told, “Saul has gone to Carmel.(E) There he has set up a monument(F) in his own honor and has turned and gone on down to Gilgal.”
13 When Samuel reached him, Saul said, “The Lord bless you! I have carried out the Lord’s instructions.”
14 But Samuel said, “What then is this bleating of sheep in my ears? What is this lowing of cattle that I hear?”
15 Saul answered, “The soldiers brought them from the Amalekites; they spared the best of the sheep and cattle to sacrifice to the Lord your God, but we totally destroyed the rest.”
16 “Enough!” Samuel said to Saul. “Let me tell you what the Lord said to me last night.”
“Tell me,” Saul replied.
17 Samuel said, “Although you were once small(G) in your own eyes, did you not become the head of the tribes of Israel? The Lord anointed you king over Israel. 18 And he sent you on a mission, saying, ‘Go and completely destroy those wicked people, the Amalekites; wage war against them until you have wiped them out.’ 19 Why did you not obey the Lord? Why did you pounce on the plunder(H) and do evil in the eyes of the Lord?”
20 “But I did obey(I) the Lord,” Saul said. “I went on the mission the Lord assigned me. I completely destroyed the Amalekites and brought back Agag their king. 21 The soldiers took sheep and cattle from the plunder, the best of what was devoted to God, in order to sacrifice them to the Lord your God at Gilgal.”
22 But Samuel replied:
“Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices
as much as in obeying the Lord?
To obey is better than sacrifice,(J)
and to heed is better than the fat of rams.
23 For rebellion is like the sin of divination,(K)
and arrogance like the evil of idolatry.
Because you have rejected(L) the word of the Lord,
he has rejected you as king.”
24 Then Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned.(M) I violated(N) the Lord’s command and your instructions. I was afraid(O) of the men and so I gave in to them. 25 Now I beg you, forgive(P) my sin and come back with me, so that I may worship the Lord.”
26 But Samuel said to him, “I will not go back with you. You have rejected(Q) the word of the Lord, and the Lord has rejected you as king over Israel!”
27 As Samuel turned to leave, Saul caught hold of the hem of his robe,(R) and it tore.(S) 28 Samuel said to him, “The Lord has torn(T) the kingdom(U) of Israel from you today and has given it to one of your neighbors—to one better than you.(V) 29 He who is the Glory of Israel does not lie(W) or change(X) his mind; for he is not a human being, that he should change his mind.”
30 Saul replied, “I have sinned.(Y) But please honor(Z) me before the elders of my people and before Israel; come back with me, so that I may worship the Lord your God.” 31 So Samuel went back with Saul, and Saul worshiped the Lord.
32 Then Samuel said, “Bring me Agag king of the Amalekites.”
Agag came to him in chains.[a] And he thought, “Surely the bitterness of death is past.”
33 But Samuel said,
“As your sword has made women childless,
so will your mother be childless among women.”(AA)
And Samuel put Agag to death before the Lord at Gilgal.
34 Then Samuel left for Ramah,(AB) but Saul went up to his home in Gibeah(AC) of Saul. 35 Until the day Samuel(AD) died, he did not go to see Saul again, though Samuel mourned(AE) for him. And the Lord regretted(AF) that he had made Saul king over Israel.

Faithless Israel Called to Repentance
6 The Lord said to me in the days of (A)King Josiah: “Have you seen what she did, that faithless one, Israel, (B)how she went up on every high hill and under every green tree, and there (C)played the whore? 7 And I thought, ‘After she has done all this she will return to me,’ but she did not return, and her treacherous (D)sister Judah saw it. 8 She saw that for all the adulteries of that faithless one, Israel, (E)I had sent her away with (F)a decree of divorce. (G)Yet her treacherous sister Judah did not fear, but she too went (H)and played the whore. 9 Because she took her whoredom lightly, she polluted the land, committing adultery with (I)stone and tree. 10 Yet for all this her treacherous sister Judah did not return to me (J)with her whole heart, but in pretense, declares the Lord.”
11 And the Lord said to me, (K)“Faithless Israel has shown herself more righteous than treacherous Judah. 12 Go, and proclaim these words toward (L)the north, and say,
(M)“‘Return, faithless Israel,
declares the Lord.
I will not look on you in anger,
for (N)I am merciful,
declares the Lord;
(O)I will not be angry forever.
13 (P)Only acknowledge your guilt,
that you rebelled against the Lord your God
and scattered your favors among foreigners under (Q)every green tree,
and that you have not obeyed my voice,
declares the Lord.
14 (R)Return, O faithless children,
declares the Lord;
(S)for I am your master;
I will take you, one from a city and two from a family,
and I will bring you to Zion.
15 “‘And (T)I will give you shepherds after my own heart, (U)who will feed you with knowledge and understanding. 16 And when you have multiplied and been fruitful in the land, in those days, declares the Lord, they shall no more say, “The ark of the covenant of the Lord.” It shall not come to mind or be remembered or missed; it shall not be made again. 17 At that time Jerusalem shall be called the throne of the Lord, (V)and all nations shall gather to it, (W)to the presence of the Lord in Jerusalem, and they shall no more stubbornly follow their own evil heart. 18 (X)In those days the house of Judah shall join the house of Israel, and together they shall come from the land (Y)of the north to (Z)the land that I gave your fathers for a heritage.
19 “‘I said,
How I would set you among my sons,
and give you a pleasant land,
a heritage most beautiful of all nations.
And I thought you would (AA)call me, My Father,
and would not turn from following me.
20 (AB)Surely, as a treacherous wife leaves her husband,
so have you been treacherous to me, O house of Israel,
declares the Lord.’”
21 A voice on the (AC)bare heights is heard,
(AD)the weeping and pleading of Israel's sons
because they have perverted their way;
they have forgotten the Lord their God.
22 (AE)“Return, O faithless sons;
(AF)I will heal your faithlessness.”
“Behold, we come to you,
for you are the Lord our God.
23 Truly (AG)the hills are a delusion,
the orgies[a] on the mountains.
(AH)Truly in the Lord our God
is the salvation of Israel.
24 “But from our youth the shameful thing has devoured all for which our fathers labored, their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters. 25 (AI)Let us lie down in our shame, and let our dishonor cover us. For (AJ)we have sinned against the Lord our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even to this day, and we have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God.”

She has gone up on every high hill and under every spreading tree(C) and has committed adultery(D) there. 7 I thought that after she had done all this she would return to me but she did not, and her unfaithful sister(E) Judah saw it.(F) 8 I gave faithless Israel(G) her certificate of divorce(H) and sent her away because of all her adulteries. ‘I will frown on you no longer,
for I am faithful,’(W) declares the Lord,
‘I will not be angry(X) forever.

“‘How gladly would I treat you like my children

and not turn away from following me.
20 But like a woman unfaithful to her husband,
so you, Israel, have been unfaithful(AT) to me,”
declares the Lord.
21 A cry is heard on the barren heights,(AU)
the weeping(AV) and pleading of the people of Israel,
because they have perverted their ways

“Yes, we will come to you,
for you are the Lord our God.
23 Surely the idolatrous commotion on the hills(BA)
and mountains is a deception;

12 Save, O Lord, for (A)the godly one is gone;
for the faithful have vanished from among the children of man.
2 Everyone (B)utters lies to his neighbor;
with (C)flattering lips and (D)a double heart they speak.
3 May the Lord cut off all (E)flattering lips,
the tongue that makes (F)great boasts,
4 those who say, “With our tongue we will prevail,
our lips are with us; who is master over us?”
5 “Because (G)the poor are plundered, because the needy groan,
(H)I will now arise,” says the Lord;
“I will place him in the (I)safety for which he longs.”
6 (J)The words of the Lord are pure words,
like silver refined in a furnace on the ground,
purified seven times.
7 You, O Lord, will keep them;
you will guard us[b] from this generation forever.

2 My brothers,[a] (A)show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, (B)the Lord of glory. 2 For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, 3 and if you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, “You sit here in a good place,” (C)while you say to the poor man, “You stand over there,” or, “Sit down at my feet,” 4 have you not then made distinctions among yourselves and become (D)judges with evil thoughts? 5 Listen, my beloved brothers, (E)has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be (F)rich in faith and heirs of (G)the kingdom, (H)which he has promised to those who love him? 6 But you (I)have dishonored the poor man. Favoritism Forbidden
2 My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious(A) Lord Jesus Christ must not show favoritism.(B) 2 Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in filthy old clothes also comes in. 3 If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, “Here’s a good seat for you,” but say to the poor man, “You stand there” or “Sit on the floor by my feet,” 4 have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges(C) with evil thoughts?
5 Listen, my dear brothers and sisters:(D) Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world(E) to be rich in faith(F) and to inherit the kingdom(G) he promised those who love him?(H) 6 But you have dishonored the poor.(I) Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court?(J) 7 Are they not the ones who are blaspheming the noble name of him to whom you belong?
8 If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, “Love your neighbor as yourself,”[a](K) you are doing right. 9 But if you show favoritism,(L) you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers.(M) 10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles(N) at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.(O) 11 For he who said, “You shall not commit adultery,”[b](P) also said, “You shall not murder.”[c](Q) If you do not commit adultery but do commit murder, you have become a lawbreaker.
12 Speak and act as those who are going to be judged(R) by the law that gives freedom,(S) 13 because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful.(T) Mercy triumphs over judgment.
