26 When Joseph came home,(A) they presented to him the gifts(B) they had brought into the house, and they bowed down before him to the ground.(C) 27 He asked them how they were, and then he said, “How is your aged father(D) you told me about? Is he still living?”(E)

28 They replied, “Your servant our father(F) is still alive and well.” And they bowed down,(G) prostrating themselves before him.(H)

29 As he looked about and saw his brother Benjamin, his own mother’s son,(I) he asked, “Is this your youngest brother, the one you told me about?”(J) And he said, “God be gracious to you,(K) my son.” 30 Deeply moved(L) at the sight of his brother, Joseph hurried out and looked for a place to weep. He went into his private room and wept(M) there.

31 After he had washed his face, he came out and, controlling himself,(N) said, “Serve the food.”(O)

32 They served him by himself, the brothers by themselves, and the Egyptians who ate with him by themselves, because Egyptians could not eat with Hebrews,(P) for that is detestable to Egyptians.(Q) 33 The men had been seated before him in the order of their ages, from the firstborn(R) to the youngest;(S) and they looked at each other in astonishment. 34 When portions were served to them from Joseph’s table, Benjamin’s portion was five times as much as anyone else’s.(T) So they feasted(U) and drank freely with him.

A Silver Cup in a Sack

44 Now Joseph gave these instructions to the steward of his house:(V) “Fill the men’s sacks with as much food as they can carry, and put each man’s silver in the mouth of his sack.(W) Then put my cup,(X) the silver one,(Y) in the mouth of the youngest one’s sack, along with the silver for his grain.” And he did as Joseph said.

As morning dawned, the men were sent on their way with their donkeys.(Z) They had not gone far from the city when Joseph said to his steward,(AA) “Go after those men at once, and when you catch up with them, say to them, ‘Why have you repaid good with evil?(AB) Isn’t this the cup(AC) my master drinks from and also uses for divination?(AD) This is a wicked thing you have done.’”

When he caught up with them, he repeated these words to them. But they said to him, “Why does my lord say such things? Far be it from your servants(AE) to do anything like that!(AF) We even brought back to you from the land of Canaan(AG) the silver(AH) we found inside the mouths of our sacks.(AI) So why would we steal(AJ) silver or gold from your master’s house? If any of your servants(AK) is found to have it, he will die;(AL) and the rest of us will become my lord’s slaves.(AM)

10 “Very well, then,” he said, “let it be as you say. Whoever is found to have it(AN) will become my slave;(AO) the rest of you will be free from blame.”(AP)

11 Each of them quickly lowered his sack to the ground and opened it. 12 Then the steward(AQ) proceeded to search,(AR) beginning with the oldest and ending with the youngest.(AS) And the cup was found in Benjamin’s sack.(AT) 13 At this, they tore their clothes.(AU) Then they all loaded their donkeys(AV) and returned to the city.

The Faith of a Canaanite Woman(A)

21 Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon.(B) 22 A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David,(C) have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly.”(D)

23 Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, “Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.”

24 He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.”(E)

25 The woman came and knelt before him.(F) “Lord, help me!” she said.

26 He replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”

27 “Yes it is, Lord,” she said. “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.”

28 Then Jesus said to her, “Woman, you have great faith!(G) Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed at that moment.

Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand(H)(I)(J)

29 Jesus left there and went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up on a mountainside and sat down. 30 Great crowds came to him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute and many others, and laid them at his feet; and he healed them.(K) 31 The people were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled made well, the lame walking and the blind seeing. And they praised the God of Israel.(L)
