Jacob Fears Esau

32 Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him. And when Jacob saw them he said, “This is God's (A)camp!” So he called the name of that place (B)Mahanaim.[a]

The Death of Samson

23 Now the lords of the Philistines gathered to offer a great sacrifice to (A)Dagon their god and to rejoice, and they said, “Our god has given Samson our enemy into our hand.” 24 And when the people saw him, (B)they praised their god. For they said, “Our god has given our enemy into our hand, the ravager of our country, who has killed many of us.”[a] 25 And (C)when their hearts were merry, they said, “Call Samson, that he may entertain us.” So they called Samson out of the prison, and he entertained them. They made him stand between the pillars. 26 And Samson said to the young man who held him by the hand, “Let me feel the pillars on which the house rests, that I may lean against them.” 27 Now the house was full of men and women. All the lords of the Philistines were there, and (D)on the roof there were about 3,000 men and women, who looked on while Samson entertained.

28 Then Samson called to the Lord and said, “O Lord God, (E)please remember me and please strengthen me only this once, O God, that I may be avenged on the Philistines for my two eyes.” 29 And Samson grasped the two middle pillars on which the house rested, and he leaned his weight against them, his right hand on the one and his left hand on the other. 30 And Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines.” Then he bowed with all his strength, and the house fell upon the lords and upon all the people who were in it. So the dead whom he killed at his death were more than those whom he had killed during his life. 31 Then his brothers and all his family came down and took him and brought him up and buried him (F)between Zorah and Eshtaol in the tomb of Manoah his father. He had judged Israel twenty years.

Micah and the Levite

17 There was a man of (G)the hill country of Ephraim, whose name was Micah. And he said to his mother, “The 1,100 pieces of silver that were taken from you, about which you uttered a curse, and also spoke it in my ears, behold, the silver is with me; I took it.” And his mother said, (H)“Blessed be my son by the Lord.” And he restored the 1,100 pieces of silver to his mother. And his mother said, “I dedicate the silver to the Lord from my hand for my son, to make (I)a carved image and (J)a metal image. Now therefore I will restore it to you.” So when he restored the money to his mother, his mother (K)took 200 pieces of silver and gave it to the silversmith, who made it into a carved image and a metal image. And it was in the house of Micah. And the man Micah had a shrine, and he made (L)an ephod and (M)household gods, and (N)ordained[b] one of his sons, who became his priest. (O)In those days there was no king in Israel. (P)Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.

Now there was a young man of (Q)Bethlehem in Judah, of the family of Judah, who was a Levite, and he sojourned there. And the man departed from the town of Bethlehem in Judah to sojourn where he could find a place. And as he journeyed, he came to (R)the hill country of Ephraim to the house of Micah. And Micah said to him, “Where do you come from?” And he said to him, “I am a Levite of Bethlehem in Judah, and I am going to sojourn where I may find a place.” 10 And Micah said to him, “Stay with me, and be to me (S)a father and a priest, and I will give you ten pieces of silver a year and a suit of clothes and your living.” And the Levite went in. 11 And the Levite (T)was content to dwell with the man, and the young man became to him like one of his sons. 12 And Micah (U)ordained the Levite, and the young man (V)became his priest, and was in the house of Micah. 13 Then Micah said, “Now I know that the Lord will prosper me, because I have a Levite as priest.”

13 Also (A)henceforth I am he;
    there is none who can deliver from my hand;
    I work, and who can turn it back?”

14 Thus says the Lord,
    your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel:
(B)“For your sake I send to Babylon
    and (C)bring them all down as fugitives,
    (D)even the Chaldeans, in the ships in which they rejoice.
15 I am the Lord, your Holy One,
    the Creator of Israel, your King.”

16 Thus says the Lord,
    (E)who makes a way in the sea,
    a path in the mighty waters,
17 who (F)brings forth chariot and horse,
    army and warrior;
they lie down, they cannot rise,
    (G)they are extinguished, (H)quenched like a wick:
18 (I)“Remember not the former things,
    nor consider the things of old.
19 (J)Behold, I am doing a new thing;
    now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?
(K)I will make a way in the wilderness
    (L)and rivers in the desert.
20 The wild beasts will honor me,
    (M)the jackals and the ostriches,
(N)for I give water in the wilderness,
    rivers in the desert,
to give drink to my chosen people,
21     the people whom I formed for myself
(O)that they might declare my praise.

22 “Yet you did not call upon me, O Jacob;
    but (P)you have been weary of me, O Israel!
23 (Q)You have not brought me your sheep for burnt offerings,
    or honored me with your sacrifices.
I have not burdened you with offerings,
    (R)or wearied you with frankincense.
24 You have not bought me sweet cane with money,
    or satisfied me with the fat of your sacrifices.
But you have burdened me with your sins;
    you have wearied me with your iniquities.

25 “I, I am he
    (S)who blots out (T)your transgressions for my own sake,
    and I will not remember your sins.
26 Put me in remembrance; (U)let us argue together;
    set forth your case, that you may be proved right.
27 (V)Your first father sinned,
    and (W)your mediators transgressed against me.
28 Therefore (X)I will profane the princes of the sanctuary,
    and (Y)deliver Jacob to utter destruction
    and Israel to reviling.

10 Therefore I say, ‘Listen to me;
    let me also declare my opinion.’

11 “Behold, I waited for your words,
    I listened for your wise sayings,
    while you searched out what to say.
12 I gave you my attention,
    and, behold, there was none among you who refuted Job
    or who answered his words.
13 Beware (A)lest you say, ‘We have found wisdom;
    God may vanquish him, not a man.’
14 He has not directed his words against me,
    and I will not answer him with your speeches.

15 “They are dismayed; they answer no more;
    they have not a word to say.
16 And shall I wait, because they do not speak,
    because they stand there, and answer no more?
17 I also will answer with my share;
    I also will declare my opinion.
18 For I am full of words;
    the spirit within me constrains me.
19 Behold, my belly is like wine that has no vent;
    like new (B)wineskins ready to burst.
20 (C)I must speak, that I may find (D)relief;
    I must open my lips and answer.
21 I will not (E)show partiality to any man
    or use flattery toward any person.
22 For I do not know how to flatter,
    else my Maker would soon take me away.

If Your Brother Sins Against You

15 (A)“If your brother sins against you, (B)go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have (C)gained your brother. 16 But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every charge may be established (D)by the evidence of two or three witnesses. 17 If he refuses to listen to them, (E)tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, (F)let him be to you as (G)a Gentile and (H)a tax collector. 18 Truly, I say to you, (I)whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed[a] in heaven. 19 Again I say to you, if two of you (J)agree on earth about anything they ask, (K)it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. 20 For where two or three are (L)gathered in my name, (M)there am I among them.”

The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant

21 Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often (N)will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? (O)As many as seven times?” 22 Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times.

Paul Returns to Antioch

18 After this, Paul stayed many days longer and then took leave of (A)the brothers[a] and set sail for Syria, and with him (B)Priscilla and Aquila. At (C)Cenchreae (D)he had cut his hair, for he was under a vow. 19 And they came to (E)Ephesus, and he left them there, but (F)he himself went into the synagogue and reasoned with the Jews. 20 When they asked him to stay for a longer period, he declined. 21 But on taking leave of them he said, “I will return to you (G)if God wills,” and he set sail from Ephesus.

22 When he had landed at Caesarea, he (H)went up and greeted the church, and then went down to Antioch. 23 After spending some time there, he departed and (I)went from one place to the next through the region of Galatia and Phrygia, (J)strengthening all the disciples.

Apollos Speaks Boldly in Ephesus

24 Now a Jew named (K)Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was an eloquent man, (L)competent in the Scriptures. 25 He had been instructed in (M)the way of the Lord. And (N)being fervent in spirit,[b] he spoke and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, though he knew only (O)the baptism of John. 26 He began to speak boldly in the synagogue, but when (P)Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained to him (Q)the way of God more accurately. 27 And when he wished to cross to (R)Achaia, (S)the brothers encouraged him and (T)wrote to the disciples to welcome him. When he arrived, (U)he greatly helped those who through grace had believed, 28 for he powerfully refuted the Jews in public, showing by the Scriptures (V)that the Christ was Jesus.
