15 (A)Canaan fathered Sidon his firstborn and Heth, 16 and the Jebusites, the Amorites, the Girgashites, 17 the Hivites, the Arkites, the Sinites, 18 the Arvadites, the Zemarites, and the Hamathites. Afterward the clans of the Canaanites dispersed. 19 And the territory of the Canaanites extended from Sidon in the direction of Gerar as far as Gaza, and in the direction of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, as far as Lasha. 20 These are the sons of Ham, by their clans, their languages, their lands, and their nations.

21 To Shem also, the father of all the children of Eber, the elder brother of Japheth, children were born. 22 The (B)sons of Shem: Elam, Asshur, Arpachshad, Lud, and Aram. 23 The sons of Aram: Uz, Hul, Gether, and Mash. 24 Arpachshad fathered (C)Shelah; and Shelah fathered Eber. 25 (D)To Eber were born two sons: the name of the one was Peleg,[a] for in his days the earth was divided, and his brother's name was Joktan. 26 Joktan fathered Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah, 27 Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah, 28 Obal, Abimael, Sheba, 29 (E)Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab; all these were the sons of Joktan. 30 The territory in which they lived extended from Mesha in the direction of Sephar to the hill country of the east. 31 These are the sons of Shem, by their clans, their languages, their lands, and their nations.

32 These are the clans of the sons of Noah, according to their genealogies, in their nations, (F)and from these the nations spread abroad on the earth after the flood.

Land Still to Be Conquered

13 Now Joshua (Y)was old and advanced in years, and the Lord said to him, “You are old and advanced in years, and there remains yet very much land (Z)to possess. (AA)This is the land that yet remains: all the (AB)regions of the Philistines, and all those of the Geshurites (from the (AC)Shihor, which is east of Egypt, northward to the boundary of Ekron, it is counted as Canaanite; (AD)there are five rulers of the Philistines, those of Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron), and those of (AE)the Avvim, in the south, all the land of the Canaanites, and Mearah that belongs to the Sidonians, to Aphek, to the boundary of (AF)the Amorites, and the land of the (AG)Gebalites, and all Lebanon, toward the sunrise, from (AH)Baal-gad below Mount Hermon to (AI)Lebo-hamath, all the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon to (AJ)Misrephoth-maim, even all the Sidonians. I myself will drive (AK)them out from before the people of Israel. Only (AL)allot the land to Israel (AM)for an inheritance, as I have commanded you. Now therefore (AN)divide this land for an inheritance to the nine tribes and half the tribe of Manasseh.”

The Righteous Reign of the Branch

11 There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of (A)Jesse,
    and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.
And (B)the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him,
    the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
    the Spirit of counsel and might,
    the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord.
(C)He shall not judge by (D)what his eyes see,
    or decide disputes by (E)what his ears hear,
but (F)with righteousness he shall judge the poor,
    and decide with equity for the meek of the earth;
and he shall (G)strike the earth with the rod of his mouth,
    and (H)with the breath of his lips (I)he shall kill the wicked.
Righteousness shall be the belt of his waist,
    and (J)faithfulness the belt of his loins.

(K)The wolf shall dwell with the lamb,
    and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat,
and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together;
    and a little child shall lead them.
The cow and the bear shall graze;
    their young shall lie down together;
    and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
The nursing child shall play over the hole of the cobra,
    and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder's den.
(L)They shall not hurt or destroy
    in all (M)my holy mountain;
(N)for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord
    as the waters cover the sea.

    (H)Who will say to him, ‘What are you doing?’

Fasting

16 “And (A)when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. (B)Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 17 But when you fast, (C)anoint your head and wash your face, 18 that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. (D)And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Lay Up Treasures in Heaven

19 (E)“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where (F)moth and rust[a] destroy and where thieves (G)break in and steal, 20 (H)but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

22 (I)“The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, 23 (J)but if (K)your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!

24 (L)“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and (M)money.[b]

29 But Peter and the apostles answered, (A)“We must obey God rather than men. 30 (B)The God of our fathers (C)raised Jesus, (D)whom you killed by hanging him on (E)a tree. 31 God exalted (F)him at his right hand as (G)Leader and (H)Savior, (I)to give (J)repentance to Israel and (K)forgiveness of sins. 32 And (L)we are witnesses to these things, and (M)so is the Holy Spirit, (N)whom God has given to those who obey him.”

33 When they heard this, they (O)were enraged and wanted to kill them. 34 But a Pharisee in the council named (P)Gamaliel, (Q)a teacher of the law held in honor by all the people, stood up and gave orders to put the men outside for a little while. 35 And he said to them, “Men of Israel, take care what you are about to do with these men. 36 For (R)before these days Theudas rose up, (S)claiming to be somebody, and a number of men, about four hundred, joined him. He was killed, and all who followed him were dispersed and came to nothing. 37 After him Judas the Galilean rose up in the days of (T)the census and drew away some of the people after him. He too perished, and all who followed him were scattered. 38 So in the present case I tell you, keep away from these men and let them alone, for (U)if this plan or this undertaking is of man, it will fail; 39 but (V)if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You (W)might even be found opposing God!” So they took his advice, 40 and (X)when they had called in the apostles, (Y)they beat them and charged them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. 41 Then they left the presence of the council, (Z)rejoicing that they were counted worthy (AA)to suffer dishonor for (AB)the name. 42 And every day, (AC)in the temple and from house to house, they did not cease teaching and (AD)preaching (AE)that the Christ is Jesus.
