Promesa del nacimiento de Isaac

18 Después le apareció Jehová en el encinar de Mamre, estando él sentado a la puerta de su tienda en el calor del día. 2 Y alzó sus ojos y miró, y he aquí tres varones que estaban junto a él; y cuando los vio, salió corriendo de la puerta de su tienda a recibirlos, y se postró en tierra, 3 y dijo: Señor, si ahora he hallado gracia en tus ojos, te ruego que no pases de tu siervo. 4 Que se traiga ahora un poco de agua, y lavad vuestros pies; y recostaos debajo de un árbol, 5 y traeré un bocado de pan, y sustentad vuestro corazón, y después pasaréis; pues por eso habéis pasado cerca de vuestro siervo. Y ellos dijeron: Haz así como has dicho. 6 Entonces Abraham fue de prisa a la tienda a Sara, y le dijo: Toma pronto tres medidas de flor de harina, y amasa y haz panes cocidos debajo del rescoldo. 7 Y corrió Abraham a las vacas, y tomó un becerro tierno y bueno, y lo dio al criado, y este se dio prisa a prepararlo. 8 Tomó también mantequilla y leche, y el becerro que había preparado, y lo puso delante de ellos; y él se estuvo con ellos debajo del árbol, y comieron.

9 Y le dijeron: ¿Dónde está Sara tu mujer? Y él respondió: Aquí en la tienda. 10 Entonces dijo: De cierto volveré a ti; y según el tiempo de la vida, he aquí que Sara tu mujer tendrá un hijo.(A) Y Sara escuchaba a la puerta de la tienda, que estaba detrás de él. 11 Y Abraham y Sara eran viejos, de edad avanzada; y a Sara le había cesado ya la costumbre de las mujeres. 12 Se rio, pues, Sara entre sí, diciendo: ¿Después que he envejecido tendré deleite, siendo también mi señor(B) ya viejo? 13 Entonces Jehová dijo a Abraham: ¿Por qué se ha reído Sara diciendo: Será cierto que he de dar a luz siendo ya vieja? 14 ¿Hay para Dios alguna cosa difícil?(C) Al tiempo señalado volveré a ti, y según el tiempo de la vida, Sara tendrá un hijo. 15 Entonces Sara negó, diciendo: No me reí; porque tuvo miedo. Y él dijo: No es así, sino que te has reído.

Abraham intercede por Sodoma

16 Y los varones se levantaron de allí, y miraron hacia Sodoma; y Abraham iba con ellos acompañándolos. 17 Y Jehová dijo: ¿Encubriré yo a Abraham lo que voy a hacer, 18 habiendo de ser Abraham una nación grande y fuerte, y habiendo de ser benditas en él todas las naciones de la tierra? 19 Porque yo sé que mandará a sus hijos y a su casa después de sí, que guarden el camino de Jehová, haciendo justicia y juicio, para que haga venir Jehová sobre Abraham lo que ha hablado acerca de él. 20 Entonces Jehová le dijo: Por cuanto el clamor contra Sodoma y Gomorra se aumenta más y más, y el pecado de ellos se ha agravado en extremo, 21 descenderé ahora, y veré si han consumado su obra según el clamor que ha venido hasta mí; y si no, lo sabré. 22 Y se apartaron de allí los varones, y fueron hacia Sodoma; pero Abraham estaba aún delante de Jehová.

23 Y se acercó Abraham y dijo: ¿Destruirás también al justo con el impío? 24 Quizá haya cincuenta justos dentro de la ciudad: ¿destruirás también y no perdonarás al lugar por amor a los cincuenta justos que estén dentro de él? 25 Lejos de ti el hacer tal, que hagas morir al justo con el impío, y que sea el justo tratado como el impío; nunca tal hagas. El Juez de toda la tierra, ¿no ha de hacer lo que es justo? 26 Entonces respondió Jehová: Si hallare en Sodoma cincuenta justos dentro de la ciudad, perdonaré a todo este lugar por amor a ellos. 27 Y Abraham replicó y dijo: He aquí ahora que he comenzado a hablar a mi Señor, aunque soy polvo y ceniza. 28 Quizá faltarán de cincuenta justos cinco; ¿destruirás por aquellos cinco toda la ciudad? Y dijo: No la destruiré, si hallare allí cuarenta y cinco. 29 Y volvió a hablarle, y dijo: Quizá se hallarán allí cuarenta. Y respondió: No lo haré por amor a los cuarenta. 30 Y dijo: No se enoje ahora mi Señor, si hablare: quizá se hallarán allí treinta. Y respondió: No lo haré si hallare allí treinta. 31 Y dijo: He aquí ahora que he emprendido el hablar a mi Señor: quizá se hallarán allí veinte. No la destruiré, respondió, por amor a los veinte. 32 Y volvió a decir: No se enoje ahora mi Señor, si hablare solamente una vez: quizá se hallarán allí diez. No la destruiré, respondió, por amor a los diez. 33 Y Jehová se fue, luego que acabó de hablar a Abraham; y Abraham volvió a su lugar.

La teofanía de Mambré

18 Apretaba el calor y estaba Abrahán sentado a la entrada de su tienda, cuando se le apareció el Señor en el encinar de Mambré. 2 Al alzar la vista vio a tres hombres de pie frente a él. Apenas los vio, corrió a su encuentro desde la entrada de la tienda y, postrándose en tierra, 3 dijo:

— Señor mío, será para mí un honor que aceptes la hospitalidad que este siervo tuyo te ofrece. 4 Que les traigan un poco de agua para que laven sus pies, y luego podrán descansar bajo el árbol. 5 Ya que me han honrado con su visita, permítanme que vaya a buscar algo de comer para que repongan fuerzas antes de seguir su camino.

Ellos respondieron:

— Bien, haz lo que dices.

6 Abrahán entró corriendo en la tienda donde estaba Sara, y le dijo:

— ¡Rápido!, toma tres medidas de la mejor harina, amásalas y prepara unas tortas.

7 Después Abrahán fue corriendo a la vacada, tomó un becerro tierno y cebado y se lo dio a su sirviente, que a toda prisa se puso a prepararlo. 8 Cuando el becerro ya estuvo a punto se lo sirvió acompañado de leche y requesón. Mientras comían, Abrahán se quedó de pie junto a ellos, debajo del árbol. 9 Ellos le preguntaron:

— ¿Dónde está Sara tu mujer?

Abrahán respondió:

— Ahí, en la tienda.

10 Uno de ellos le dijo:

— El año próximo volveré sin falta a visitarte, y para entonces Sara, tu mujer, habrá tenido un hijo.

Mientras tanto, Sara estaba escuchando a la entrada de la tienda, a espaldas del que hablaba. 11 Abrahán y Sara ya eran ancianos, entrados en años, y Sara ya no tenía sus períodos menstruales. 12 Por eso Sara no pudo contener la risa al pensar en sus adentros: “¿Ahora que ya estoy seca voy a tener placer con un marido tan viejo?”. 13 Pero el Señor dijo a Abrahán:

— ¿Cómo es que Sara se ha reído pensando que una mujer tan anciana no puede dar a luz? 14 ¿Acaso hay algo imposible para el Señor? El año que viene por estas fechas volveré a visitarte y Sara habrá tenido un hijo.

15 Sara tuvo miedo, y lo negó diciendo:

— Yo no me he reído.

Pero el Señor le replicó:

— Sí que te has reído.

Abrahán intercede por Sodoma

16 Luego aquellos hombres se levantaron y dirigieron la mirada a Sodoma. Abrahán los acompañó para despedirlos. 17 El Señor se decía: “¿Dejaré que Abrahán ignore lo que voy a hacer, 18 toda vez que se ha de convertir en un pueblo grande y poderoso, hasta el punto de que todas las naciones de la tierra serán bendecidas por él? 19 Yo lo he escogido para que enseñe a sus hijos y a su descendencia a mantenerse en el camino del Señor, haciendo lo que es justo y recto, de modo que se cumpla cuanto ha sido prometido a Abrahán”. 20 Así que el Señor dijo a Abrahán:

— La denuncia contra Sodoma y Gomorra es tan seria y su pecado tan grave, 21 que bajaré a ver si sus acciones se corresponden con la denuncia que contra ellas ha llegado a mí. Si es o no así, lo averiguaré.

22 Los visitantes se fueron de allí y se encaminaron hacia Sodoma, pero Abrahán se quedó de pie delante del Señor. 23 Entonces Abrahán se acercó al Señor y le dijo:

— ¿De modo que vas a hacer que perezcan juntos el inocente y el culpable? 24 Supongamos que en la ciudad hay cincuenta inocentes. ¿Destruirás ese lugar, en vez de perdonarlo por amor a los cincuenta inocentes que hay en él? 25 ¡Lejos de ti hacer una cosa así: hacer que mueran inocentes junto con culpables y que tenga el mismo castigo el justo que el malvado! ¡Lejos de ti! ¿El que juzga toda la tierra, no va a hacer justicia?

26 El Señor respondió:

— Si encuentro cincuenta inocentes en la ciudad de Sodoma, por ellos perdonaré a toda la ciudad.

27 Replicó Abrahán:

— ¡Ya sé que es un atrevimiento hablar así a mi Señor, yo que sólo soy polvo y ceniza! 28 Pero tal vez falten cinco inocentes para completar los cincuenta; ¿destruirás toda la ciudad si faltan esos cinco?

El Señor respondió:

— No la destruiré si encuentro allí a cuarenta y cinco inocentes.

29 Abrahán volvió a insistir:

— Supongamos que solo se encuentran cuarenta.

El Señor respondió:

— No lo haré en atención a esos cuarenta.

30 Pero Abrahán volvió a suplicar:

— Que mi Señor no se enfade si insisto. Supongamos que quizás no sean más que treinta.

El Señor respondió:

— No lo haré si encuentro a treinta inocentes.

31 Abrahán siguió insistiendo:

— Una vez más me tomo el atrevimiento de dirigirme a mi Señor. Supongamos que se encuentran veinte.

El Señor respondió:

— Por consideración a esos veinte, no la destruiré.

32 Todavía insistió Abrahán:

— ¡Qué mi Señor no se enfade si insisto por última vez! ¿Y si no son más que diez los inocentes?

El Señor respondió:

— En atención a los diez, no la destruiré.

33 Cuando acabó de hablar con Abrahán, el Señor se marchó y Abrahán regresó a su tienda.

The Son of Promise(A)

18 Then the Lord appeared to him by [a]the (B)terebinth trees of Mamre, as he was sitting in the tent door in the heat of the day. 2 (C)So he lifted his eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing by him; (D)and when he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them, and bowed himself to the ground, 3 and said, “My Lord, if I have now found favor in Your sight, do not pass on by Your servant. 4 Please let (E)a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree. 5 And (F)I will bring a morsel of bread, that (G)you may refresh your hearts. After that you may pass by, (H)inasmuch as you have come to your servant.”

They said, “Do as you have said.”

6 So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah and said, “Quickly, make ready three measures of fine meal; knead it and make cakes.” 7 And Abraham ran to the herd, took a tender and good calf, gave it to a young man, and he hastened to prepare it. 8 So (I)he took butter and milk and the calf which he had prepared, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree as they ate.

9 Then they said to him, “Where is Sarah your wife?”

So he said, “Here, (J)in the tent.”

10 And He said, “I will certainly return to you (K)according to the time of life, and behold, (L)Sarah your wife shall have a son.”

(Sarah was listening in the tent door which was behind him.) 11 Now (M)Abraham and Sarah were old, well advanced in age; and [b]Sarah (N)had passed the age of childbearing. 12 Therefore Sarah (O)laughed within herself, saying, (P)“After I have grown old, shall I have pleasure, my (Q)lord being old also?”

13 And the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Shall I surely bear a child, since I am old?’ 14 (R)Is anything too hard for the Lord? (S)At the appointed time I will return to you, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.”

15 But Sarah denied it, saying, “I did not laugh,” for she was afraid.

And He said, “No, but you did laugh!”

Abraham Intercedes for Sodom

16 Then the men rose from there and looked toward Sodom, and Abraham went with them (T)to send them on the way. 17 And the Lord said, (U)“Shall I hide from Abraham what I am doing, 18 since Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be (V)blessed in him? 19 For I have known him, in order (W)that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the Lord, to do righteousness and justice, that the Lord may bring to Abraham what He has spoken to him.” 20 And the Lord said, “Because (X)the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their (Y)sin is very grave, 21 (Z)I will go down now and see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry against it that has come to Me; and if not, (AA)I will know.”

22 Then the men turned away from there (AB)and went toward Sodom, but Abraham still stood before the Lord. 23 And Abraham (AC)came near and said, (AD)“Would You also (AE)destroy the (AF)righteous with the wicked? 24 Suppose there were fifty righteous within the city; would You also destroy the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous that were in it? 25 Far be it from You to do such a thing as this, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so (AG)that the righteous should be as the wicked; far be it from You! (AH)Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?”

26 So the Lord said, (AI)“If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes.”

27 Then Abraham answered and said, “Indeed now, I who am (AJ)but dust and ashes have taken it upon myself to speak to the Lord: 28 Suppose there were five less than the fifty righteous; would You destroy all of the city for lack of five?”

So He said, “If I find there forty-five, I will not destroy it.”

29 And he spoke to Him yet again and said, “Suppose there should be forty found there?”

So He said, “I will not do it for the sake of forty.”

30 Then he said, “Let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak: Suppose thirty should be found there?”

So He said, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.”

31 And he said, “Indeed now, I have taken it upon myself to speak to the Lord: Suppose twenty should be found there?”

So He said, “I will not destroy it for the sake of twenty.”

32 Then he said, (AK)“Let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak but once more: Suppose ten should be found there?”

(AL)And He said, “I will not destroy it for the sake of ten.” 33 So the Lord went His way as soon as He had finished speaking with Abraham; and Abraham returned to his place.

18 Now the Lord appeared to Abraham by the terebinth trees of Mamre [in Hebron], while he was sitting at the tent door in the heat of the day. 2 When he raised his eyes and looked up, behold, three men were standing [a little distance] from him. When he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them and bowed down [with his face] to the ground, 3 and Abraham said, “My [a]lord, if now I have found favor in your sight, please do not pass by your servant [without stopping to visit]. 4 Please let a little water be brought [by one of my servants] and [you may] wash your feet, and recline and rest comfortably under the tree. 5 And I will bring a piece of bread to refresh and sustain [b]you; after that you may go on, since you have come to your servant.” And they replied, “Do as you have said.” 6 So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah, and said, “Quickly, get ready three [c]measures of fine meal, knead it and bake cakes.” 7 Abraham also ran to the herd and brought a calf, tender and choice, and he gave it to the servant [to butcher], and he hurried to prepare it. 8 Then he took [d]curds and milk and the calf which he had prepared, and set it before the men; and he stood beside them under the tree while they ate.

9 Then they said to him, “Where is Sarah your wife?” And he said, “There, in the tent.” 10 He said, “I will surely return to you at this [e]time next year; and behold, Sarah your wife will have a son.” And Sarah was listening at the tent door, which was behind him.(A) 11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old, well advanced in years; she was past [the age of] childbearing. 12 So Sarah laughed to herself [when she heard the Lord’s words], saying, “After I have become old, shall I have pleasure and delight, my lord (husband) being also old?”(B) 13 And the Lord asked Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh [to herself], saying, ‘Shall I really give birth [to a child] when I am so old?’ 14 Is anything too difficult or too wonderful for the [f]Lord? At the appointed time, when the season [for her delivery] comes, I will return to you and Sarah will have a son.”(C) 15 Then Sarah denied it, saying, “I did not laugh”; because she was afraid. And He (the Lord) said, “No, but you did laugh.”

16 Then the men got up from there, and looked toward Sodom; and Abraham walked with them to send them on the way. 17 The Lord said, “Shall I keep secret from Abraham [My friend and servant] what I am going to do,(D) 18 since Abraham [g]is destined to become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth will be blessed through him?(E) 19 For I have known (chosen, acknowledged) him [as My own], so that he may teach and command his children and [the sons of] his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is righteous and just, so that the Lord may bring upon Abraham what He has promised him.” 20 And the Lord said, “The outcry [of the sin] of Sodom and Gomorrah is indeed great, and their sin is exceedingly grave. 21 I will go down now, and see whether they have acted [as vilely and wickedly] as the outcry which has come to Me [indicates]; and if not, I will know.”

22 Now the [two] men (angelic beings) turned away from there and went toward Sodom, but Abraham remained standing before the Lord. 23 Abraham approached [the Lord] and said, “Will You really sweep away the righteous (those who do right) with the wicked (those who do evil)? 24 Suppose there are fifty righteous [people] within the city; will You really sweep it away and not spare it for the sake of the fifty righteous who are in it? 25 Far be it from You to do [h]such a thing—to strike the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous and the wicked are treated alike. Far be it from You! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right [by executing just and righteous judgment]?” 26 So the Lord said, “If I find within the city of Sodom fifty righteous [people], then I will spare the entire place for their sake.” 27 Abraham answered, “Now behold, I who am but dust [in origin] and ashes have decided to speak to the Lord.(F) 28 If five of the fifty righteous are lacking, will You destroy the entire city for lack of five?” And He said, “If I find [at least] forty-five [righteous people] there, I will not destroy it.” 29 Abraham spoke to Him yet again and said, “Suppose [only] forty are found there.” And He said, “I will not do it for the sake of the forty [who are righteous].” 30 Then Abraham said [to Him], “Oh, may the Lord not be angry, and I will speak; suppose thirty [righteous people] are found there?” And He said, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.” 31 And he said, “Now behold, I have decided to speak to the Lord [again]. Suppose [only] twenty [righteous people] are found there?” And the Lord said, “I will not destroy it for the sake of the twenty.” 32 Then Abraham said, “Oh may the Lord not be angry [with me], and I will speak only this once; suppose ten [righteous people] are found there?” And He said, “I will not destroy it for the sake of the ten.” 33 As soon as He had finished speaking with Abraham the Lord departed, and Abraham returned to his own place.

  1. Genesis 18:3 At some point during this encounter, Abraham understood that one of the three men was actually God appearing as a man (or as an angel; cf note 16:7), and he addressed Him as such in v 14. Verse 13 confirms that it was the Lord who spoke to him. The other two men were angels.
  2. Genesis 18:5 Lit your heart.
  3. Genesis 18:6 Heb seim, plural of seah; since one seah equals about nine quarts, this was a large quantity. However, Abraham was asking Sarah to make cakes of bread which actually could be baked quickly because they were similar to pizza dough, that is, large, round, and flat. Together with the other food that Abraham provided (vv 7, 8), his promise of “a piece of bread” in v 5 was greatly understated, and the generous meal reflected the respect that he held for his special visitors.
  4. Genesis 18:8 Or sour milk, or perhaps butter. It may have served as a kind of condiment for the bread.
  5. Genesis 18:10 Lit when the time revives. Some regard this as a reference to springtime. Others think it means “the time when the life is ready.”
  6. Genesis 18:14 The divine Hebrew name YHWH (Yahweh), usually represented by “Lord,” occurs more than 5,000 times in the Bible.
  7. Genesis 18:18 Lit will surely.
  8. Genesis 18:25 Lit according to this word.
