Modo de proceder de Dios con Israel

20 Aconteció en el año séptimo, en el mes quinto, a los diez días del mes, que vinieron algunos de los ancianos de Israel a consultar a Jehová, y se sentaron delante de mí. 2 Y vino a mí palabra de Jehová, diciendo: 3 Hijo de hombre, habla a los ancianos de Israel, y diles: Así ha dicho Jehová el Señor: ¿A consultarme venís vosotros? Vivo yo, que no os responderé, dice Jehová el Señor. 4 ¿Quieres tú juzgarlos? ¿Los quieres juzgar tú, hijo de hombre? Hazles conocer las abominaciones de sus padres, 5 y diles: Así ha dicho Jehová el Señor: El día que escogí a Israel, y que alcé mi mano para jurar a la descendencia de la casa de Jacob, cuando me di a conocer a ellos en la tierra de Egipto, cuando alcé mi mano y les juré diciendo: Yo soy Jehová vuestro Dios; 6 aquel día que les alcé mi mano, jurando así que los sacaría de la tierra de Egipto a la tierra que les había provisto, que fluye leche y miel, la cual es la más hermosa de todas las tierras;(A) 7 entonces les dije: Cada uno eche de sí las abominaciones de delante de sus ojos, y no os contaminéis con los ídolos de Egipto. Yo soy Jehová vuestro Dios.

8 Mas ellos se rebelaron contra mí, y no quisieron obedecerme; no echó de sí cada uno las abominaciones de delante de sus ojos, ni dejaron los ídolos de Egipto; y dije que derramaría mi ira sobre ellos, para cumplir mi enojo en ellos en medio de la tierra de Egipto. 9 Con todo, a causa de mi nombre, para que no se infamase ante los ojos de las naciones en medio de las cuales estaban, en cuyos ojos fui conocido, actué para sacarlos de la tierra de Egipto. 10 Los saqué de la tierra de Egipto, y los traje al desierto, 11 y les di mis estatutos, y les hice conocer mis decretos, por los cuales el hombre que los cumpliere vivirá. 12 Y les di también mis días de reposo,[a] para que fuesen por señal entre mí y ellos,(B) para que supiesen que yo soy Jehová que los santifico. 13 Mas se rebeló contra mí la casa de Israel en el desierto; no anduvieron en mis estatutos, y desecharon mis decretos, por los cuales el hombre que los cumpliere, vivirá;(C) y mis días de reposo[b] profanaron en gran manera; dije, por tanto, que derramaría sobre ellos mi ira en el desierto para exterminarlos. 14 Pero actué a causa de mi nombre, para que no se infamase a la vista de las naciones ante cuyos ojos los había sacado.

15 También yo les alcé mi mano en el desierto, jurando que no los traería a la tierra que les había dado, que fluye leche y miel, la cual es la más hermosa de todas las tierras;(D) 16 porque desecharon mis decretos, y no anduvieron en mis estatutos, y mis días de reposo[c] profanaron, porque tras sus ídolos iba su corazón. 17 Con todo, los perdonó mi ojo, pues no los maté, ni los exterminé en el desierto; 18 antes dije en el desierto a sus hijos: No andéis en los estatutos de vuestros padres, ni guardéis sus leyes, ni os contaminéis con sus ídolos. 19 Yo soy Jehová vuestro Dios; andad en mis estatutos, y guardad mis preceptos, y ponedlos por obra; 20 y santificad mis días de reposo,[d] y sean por señal entre mí y vosotros, para que sepáis que yo soy Jehová vuestro Dios. 21 Mas los hijos se rebelaron contra mí; no anduvieron en mis estatutos, ni guardaron mis decretos para ponerlos por obra, por los cuales el hombre que los cumpliere vivirá; profanaron mis días de reposo.[e]

Dije entonces que derramaría mi ira sobre ellos, para cumplir mi enojo en ellos en el desierto. 22 Mas retraje mi mano a causa de mi nombre, para que no se infamase a la vista de las naciones ante cuyos ojos los había sacado. 23 También les alcé yo mi mano en el desierto, jurando que los esparciría entre las naciones, y que los dispersaría por las tierras,(E) 24 porque no pusieron por obra mis decretos, sino que desecharon mis estatutos y profanaron mis días de reposo,[f] y tras los ídolos de sus padres se les fueron los ojos. 25 Por eso yo también les di estatutos que no eran buenos, y decretos por los cuales no podrían vivir. 26 Y los contaminé en sus ofrendas cuando hacían pasar por el fuego a todo primogénito, para desolarlos y hacerles saber que yo soy Jehová.

27 Por tanto, hijo de hombre, habla a la casa de Israel, y diles: Así ha dicho Jehová el Señor: Aun en esto me afrentaron vuestros padres cuando cometieron rebelión contra mí. 28 Porque yo los traje a la tierra sobre la cual había alzado mi mano jurando que había de dársela, y miraron a todo collado alto y a todo árbol frondoso, y allí sacrificaron sus víctimas, y allí presentaron ofrendas que me irritan, allí pusieron también su incienso agradable, y allí derramaron sus libaciones. 29 Y yo les dije: ¿Qué es ese lugar alto adonde vosotros vais? Y fue llamado su nombre Bama[g] hasta el día de hoy. 30 Di, pues, a la casa de Israel: Así ha dicho Jehová el Señor: ¿No os contamináis vosotros a la manera de vuestros padres, y fornicáis tras sus abominaciones? 31 Porque ofreciendo vuestras ofrendas, haciendo pasar vuestros hijos por el fuego, os habéis contaminado con todos vuestros ídolos hasta hoy; ¿y he de responderos yo, casa de Israel? Vivo yo, dice Jehová el Señor, que no os responderé.

32 Y no ha de ser lo que habéis pensado. Porque vosotros decís: Seamos como las naciones, como las demás familias de la tierra, que sirven al palo y a la piedra.

33 Vivo yo, dice Jehová el Señor, que con mano fuerte y brazo extendido, y enojo derramado, he de reinar sobre vosotros; 34 y os sacaré de entre los pueblos, y os reuniré de las tierras en que estáis esparcidos, con mano fuerte y brazo extendido, y enojo derramado; 35 y os traeré al desierto de los pueblos, y allí litigaré con vosotros cara a cara. 36 Como litigué con vuestros padres en el desierto de la tierra de Egipto, así litigaré con vosotros, dice Jehová el Señor. 37 Os haré pasar bajo la vara, y os haré entrar en los vínculos del pacto; 38 y apartaré de entre vosotros a los rebeldes, y a los que se rebelaron contra mí; de la tierra de sus peregrinaciones los sacaré, mas a la tierra de Israel no entrarán; y sabréis que yo soy Jehová.

39 Y a vosotros, oh casa de Israel, así ha dicho Jehová el Señor: Andad cada uno tras sus ídolos, y servidles, si es que a mí no me obedecéis; pero no profanéis más mi santo nombre con vuestras ofrendas y con vuestros ídolos.

40 Pero en mi santo monte, en el alto monte de Israel, dice Jehová el Señor, allí me servirá toda la casa de Israel, toda ella en la tierra; allí los aceptaré, y allí demandaré vuestras ofrendas, y las primicias de vuestros dones, con todas vuestras cosas consagradas. 41 Como incienso agradable os aceptaré, cuando os haya sacado de entre los pueblos, y os haya congregado de entre las tierras en que estáis esparcidos; y seré santificado en vosotros a los ojos de las naciones. 42 Y sabréis que yo soy Jehová, cuando os haya traído a la tierra de Israel, la tierra por la cual alcé mi mano jurando que la daría a vuestros padres. 43 Y allí os acordaréis de vuestros caminos, y de todos vuestros hechos en que os contaminasteis; y os aborreceréis a vosotros mismos a causa de todos vuestros pecados que cometisteis. 44 Y sabréis que yo soy Jehová, cuando haga con vosotros por amor de mi nombre, no según vuestros caminos malos ni según vuestras perversas obras, oh casa de Israel, dice Jehová el Señor.

Profecía contra el Neguev

45 Vino a mí palabra de Jehová, diciendo: 46 Hijo de hombre, pon tu rostro hacia el sur, derrama tu palabra hacia la parte austral, profetiza contra el bosque del Neguev. 47 Y dirás al bosque del Neguev: Oye la palabra de Jehová: Así ha dicho Jehová el Señor: He aquí que yo enciendo en ti fuego, el cual consumirá en ti todo árbol verde y todo árbol seco; no se apagará la llama del fuego; y serán quemados en ella todos los rostros, desde el sur hasta el norte. 48 Y verá toda carne que yo Jehová lo encendí; no se apagará. 49 Y dije: ¡Ah, Señor Jehová! ellos dicen de mí: ¿No profiere este parábolas?

La espada afilada de Jehová

21 Vino a mí palabra de Jehová, diciendo: 2 Hijo de hombre, pon tu rostro contra Jerusalén, y derrama palabra sobre los santuarios, y profetiza contra la tierra de Israel. 3 Dirás a la tierra de Israel: Así ha dicho Jehová: He aquí que yo estoy contra ti, y sacaré mi espada de su vaina, y cortaré de ti al justo y al impío. 4 Y por cuanto he de cortar de ti al justo y al impío, por tanto, mi espada saldrá de su vaina contra toda carne, desde el sur hasta el norte. 5 Y sabrá toda carne que yo Jehová saqué mi espada de su vaina; no la envainaré más. 6 Y tú, hijo de hombre, gime con quebrantamiento de tus lomos y con amargura; gime delante de los ojos de ellos. 7 Y cuando te dijeren: ¿Por qué gimes tú?, dirás: Por una noticia que cuando llegue hará que desfallezca todo corazón, y toda mano se debilitará, y se angustiará todo espíritu, y toda rodilla será débil como el agua; he aquí que viene, y se hará, dice Jehová el Señor.

8 Vino a mí palabra de Jehová, diciendo: 9 Hijo de hombre, profetiza, y di: Así ha dicho Jehová el Señor: Di: La espada, la espada está afilada, y también pulida. 10 Para degollar víctimas está afilada, pulida está para que relumbre. ¿Hemos de alegrarnos? Al cetro de mi hijo ha despreciado como a un palo cualquiera. 11 Y la dio a pulir para tenerla a mano; la espada está afilada, y está pulida para entregarla en mano del matador. 12 Clama y lamenta, oh hijo de hombre; porque esta será sobre mi pueblo, será ella sobre todos los príncipes de Israel; caerán ellos a espada juntamente con mi pueblo; hiere, pues, tu muslo; 13 porque está probado. ¿Y qué, si la espada desprecia aun al cetro? Él no será más, dice Jehová el Señor.

14 Tú, pues, hijo de hombre, profetiza, y bate una mano contra otra, y duplíquese y triplíquese el furor de la espada homicida; esta es la espada de la gran matanza que los traspasará, 15 para que el corazón desmaye, y los estragos se multipliquen; en todas las puertas de ellos he puesto espanto de espada. ¡Ah! dispuesta está para que relumbre, y preparada para degollar. 16 Corta a la derecha, hiere a la izquierda, adonde quiera que te vuelvas. 17 Y yo también batiré mi mano contra mi mano, y haré reposar mi ira. Yo Jehová he hablado.

18 Vino a mí palabra de Jehová, diciendo: 19 Tú, hijo de hombre, traza dos caminos por donde venga la espada del rey de Babilonia; de una misma tierra salgan ambos; y pon una señal al comienzo de cada camino, que indique la ciudad adonde va. 20 El camino señalarás por donde venga la espada a Rabá de los hijos de Amón, y a Judá contra Jerusalén, la ciudad fortificada. 21 Porque el rey de Babilonia se ha detenido en una encrucijada, al principio de los dos caminos, para usar de adivinación; ha sacudido las saetas, consultó a sus ídolos, miró el hígado. 22 La adivinación señaló a su mano derecha, sobre Jerusalén, para dar la orden de ataque, para dar comienzo a la matanza, para levantar la voz en grito de guerra, para poner arietes contra las puertas, para levantar vallados, y edificar torres de sitio. 23 Mas para ellos esto será como adivinación mentirosa, ya que les ha hecho solemnes juramentos; pero él trae a la memoria la maldad de ellos, para apresarlos.

24 Por tanto, así ha dicho Jehová el Señor: Por cuanto habéis hecho traer a la memoria vuestras maldades, manifestando vuestras traiciones, y descubriendo vuestros pecados en todas vuestras obras; por cuanto habéis venido en memoria, seréis entregados en su mano. 25 Y tú, profano e impío príncipe de Israel, cuyo día ha llegado ya, el tiempo de la consumación de la maldad, 26 así ha dicho Jehová el Señor: Depón la tiara, quita la corona; esto no será más así; sea exaltado lo bajo, y humillado lo alto. 27 A ruina, a ruina, a ruina lo reduciré, y esto no será más, hasta que venga aquel cuyo es el derecho, y yo se lo entregaré.

Juicio contra los amonitas

28 Y tú, hijo de hombre, profetiza, y di: Así ha dicho Jehová el Señor acerca de los hijos de Amón,(F) y de su oprobio. Dirás, pues: La espada, la espada está desenvainada para degollar; para consumir está pulida con resplandor. 29 Te profetizan vanidad, te adivinan mentira, para que la emplees sobre los cuellos de los malos sentenciados a muerte, cuyo día vino en el tiempo de la consumación de la maldad. 30 ¿La volveré a su vaina? En el lugar donde te criaste, en la tierra donde has vivido, te juzgaré, 31 y derramaré sobre ti mi ira; el fuego de mi enojo haré encender sobre ti, y te entregaré en mano de hombres temerarios, artífices de destrucción. 32 Serás pasto del fuego, se empapará la tierra de tu sangre; no habrá más memoria de ti, porque yo Jehová he hablado.

Los pecados de Jerusalén

22 Vino a mí palabra de Jehová, diciendo: 2 Tú, hijo de hombre, ¿no juzgarás tú, no juzgarás tú a la ciudad derramadora de sangre, y le mostrarás todas sus abominaciones? 3 Dirás, pues: Así ha dicho Jehová el Señor: ¡Ciudad derramadora de sangre en medio de sí, para que venga su hora, y que hizo ídolos contra sí misma para contaminarse! 4 En tu sangre que derramaste has pecado, y te has contaminado en tus ídolos que hiciste; y has hecho acercar tu día, y has llegado al término de tus años; por tanto, te he dado en oprobio a las naciones, y en escarnio a todas las tierras. 5 Las que están cerca de ti y las que están lejos se reirán de ti, amancillada de nombre, y de grande turbación.

6 He aquí que los príncipes de Israel, cada uno según su poder, se esfuerzan en derramar sangre. 7 Al padre y a la madre despreciaron en ti;(G) al extranjero trataron con violencia en medio de ti; al huérfano y a la viuda despojaron en ti.(H) 8 Mis santuarios menospreciaste, y mis días de reposo[h] has profanado.(I) 9 Calumniadores hubo en ti para derramar sangre; y sobre los montes comieron en ti; hicieron en medio de ti perversidades. 10 La desnudez del padre descubrieron en ti, y en ti hicieron violencia a la que estaba inmunda por su menstruo. 11 Cada uno hizo abominación con la mujer de su prójimo, cada uno contaminó pervertidamente a su nuera, y cada uno violó en ti a su hermana, hija de su padre.(J) 12 Precio recibieron en ti(K) para derramar sangre; interés y usura tomaste,(L) y a tus prójimos defraudaste con violencia; te olvidaste de mí, dice Jehová el Señor.

13 Y he aquí que batí mis manos a causa de tu avaricia que cometiste, y a causa de la sangre que derramaste en medio de ti. 14 ¿Estará firme tu corazón? ¿Serán fuertes tus manos en los días en que yo proceda contra ti? Yo Jehová he hablado, y lo haré. 15 Te dispersaré por las naciones, y te esparciré por las tierras; y haré fenecer de ti tu inmundicia. 16 Y por ti misma serás degradada a la vista de las naciones; y sabrás que yo soy Jehová.

God’s Dealings with Israel Rehearsed

20 Now in the seventh year, in the fifth month, on the tenth of the month, men from the (A)elders of Israel came to inquire of the Lord, and they sat before me. 2 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 3 “Son of man, speak to the elders of Israel and say to them, ‘This is what the Lord [a]God says: “Do you yourselves come to inquire of Me? As I live,” declares the Lord God, “(B)I certainly will not be inquired of by you.”’ 4 Will you judge them, will you judge them, son of man? (C)Make known to them the abominations of their fathers; 5 and say to them, ‘This is what the Lord God says: “On the day when I (D)chose Israel and [b]swore to the [c]descendants of the house of Jacob and made Myself known to them in the land of Egypt, when I [d]swore to them, saying, (E)I am the Lord your God, 6 on that day I swore to them, (F)to bring them out from the land of Egypt into a land that I had [e]selected for them, (G)flowing with milk and honey, which is (H)the glory of all the lands. 7 And I said to them, ‘(I)Throw away, each of you, the detestable things of his eyes, and (J)do not defile yourselves with the idols of Egypt; (K)I am the Lord your God.’ 8 But they (L)rebelled against Me and were not willing to listen to Me; they did not throw away, each of them, the detestable things of their eyes, nor did they abandon the (M)idols of Egypt.

“Then I [f]resolved to (N)pour out My wrath on them, to [g]use up My anger against them in the midst of the land of Egypt. 9 But I acted (O)for the sake of My name, that it would (P)not be defiled in the sight of the nations among whom they lived, in whose sight I made Myself known to them by bringing them out of the land of Egypt. 10 So I took them out of the land of Egypt and brought them into the (Q)wilderness. 11 I gave them My (R)statutes and informed them of My ordinances, (S)which, if [h]a person [i]follows them, then he will live by them. 12 Also I gave them My Sabbaths to be a (T)sign between Me and them, so that they might know that I am the Lord who sanctifies them. 13 But the house of Israel (U)rebelled against Me in the wilderness. They did not walk in My statutes and they rejected My ordinances, (V)which, if [j]a person [k]follows them, then he will live by them; and they greatly profaned My (W)Sabbaths. Then I [l]resolved to (X)pour out My wrath on them in the wilderness, to annihilate them. 14 But I acted for the sake of My name, so that it would not be defiled before the eyes of the nations, before whose eyes I had brought them out. 15 Also (Y)I swore to them in the wilderness that I would not bring them into the land which I had given them, flowing with milk and honey, which is the glory of all the lands, 16 because they rejected My ordinances, and as for My statutes, they did not walk in them; they also profaned My Sabbaths, because their (Z)heart continually followed their idols. 17 Yet My eye spared them rather than destroying them, and I did not bring about their (AA)annihilation in the wilderness.

18 “Instead, I said to their [m](AB)children in the wilderness, ‘(AC)Do not walk in the statutes of your fathers or keep their ordinances or defile yourselves with their idols. 19 (AD)I am the Lord your God; (AE)walk in My statutes and keep My ordinances and [n]follow them. 20 (AF)Sanctify My Sabbaths; and they shall be a sign between Me and you, so that you may know that I am the Lord your God.’ 21 But the (AG)children rebelled against Me; they did not walk in My statutes, nor were they careful to [o]follow My ordinances which, if [p]a person [q]follows them, then he will live by them; they profaned My Sabbaths. So I [r]resolved to pour out My wrath on them, to [s]use up My anger against them in the wilderness. 22 But I (AH)withdrew My hand and acted (AI)for the sake of My name, so that it would not be defiled in the sight of the nations in whose sight I had brought them out. 23 Also I swore to them in the wilderness that I would (AJ)scatter them among the nations and disperse them among the lands, 24 because they had not [t]complied with My ordinances, but had rejected My statutes and had profaned My Sabbaths, and (AK)their eyes were [u]on the idols of their fathers. 25 I also gave them statutes that were (AL)not good, and ordinances by which they could not live; 26 and I pronounced them (AM)unclean because of their gifts, in that they (AN)made all [v]their firstborn pass through the fire so that I might make them desolate, in order that they might (AO)know that I am the Lord.”’

27 “Therefore (AP)speak to the house of Israel, son of man, and say to them, ‘This is what the Lord God says: “Again, in this your fathers have (AQ)blasphemed Me by (AR)being disloyal to Me. 28 When I had (AS)brought them into the land which I swore to give to them, then they saw every (AT)high hill and every tree thick with branches, and there they offered their sacrifices and there they presented the provocation of their offering. There also they made their soothing aroma and there they poured out their drink offerings. 29 Then I said to them, ‘What is the high place to which you go?’ So its name is called [w]Bamah to this day.”’ 30 Therefore, say to the house of Israel, ‘This is what the Lord God says: “Will you defile yourselves in the way of your (AU)fathers and adulterously pursue their detestable things? 31 And [x]when you offer your gifts, when you (AV)make your sons pass through the fire, you are defiling yourselves with all your idols to this day. So shall I be inquired of by you, house of Israel? As I live,” declares the Lord God, “I certainly will not be inquired of by you. 32 And whatever (AW)comes [y]into your mind certainly will not come about, when you say: ‘We will be like the nations, like the families of the lands, (AX)serving wood and stone.’

God Will Restore Israel to Her Land

33 “As I live,” declares the Lord God, “with a mighty hand and with an (AY)outstretched arm and with wrath poured out, I assuredly shall be (AZ)king over you. 34 I will (BA)bring you out from the peoples and gather you from the lands where you are scattered, with a mighty hand and with an outstretched arm and with (BB)wrath poured out; 35 and I will bring you into the (BC)wilderness of the peoples, and there I will enter into judgment with you face to face. 36 Just as I (BD)entered into judgment with your fathers in the (BE)wilderness of the land of Egypt, so I will enter into judgment with you,” declares the Lord God. 37 “I will make you (BF)pass under the rod, and I will bring you into the bond of the covenant; 38 and I will (BG)purge from you the rebels and those who revolt against Me; I will bring them out of the land where they reside, but they will (BH)not enter the [z]land of Israel. So you will know that I am the Lord.

39 “As for you, house of Israel,” this is what the Lord God says: “(BI)Go, serve, everyone of you his idols; [aa]but later you will certainly listen to Me, and My holy name you will no longer (BJ)defile with your gifts and your idols. 40 For on My holy mountain, on the high mountain of Israel,” declares the Lord God, “there the entire house of Israel, (BK)all of them, will serve Me in the land; there I will (BL)accept them and there I will demand your contributions and the choicest of your gifts, with all your holy things. 41 [ab]As a soothing aroma I will accept you when I (BM)bring you out from the peoples and gather you from the lands where you are scattered; and I will show Myself to be (BN)holy among you in the sight of the nations. 42 And (BO)you will know that I am the Lord, (BP)when I bring you into the land of Israel, into the (BQ)land which I swore to give to your forefathers. 43 And there you will (BR)remember your ways and all your deeds by which you have defiled yourselves; and you will (BS)loathe yourselves in your own [ac]sight for all the evil things that you have done. 44 Then (BT)you will know that I am the Lord, when I have dealt with you (BU)in behalf of My name, not according to your evil ways or according to your corrupt deeds, house of Israel,” declares the Lord God.’”

45 [ad]Now the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 46 “Son of man, set your face toward the south, and speak prophetically against the (BV)south and (BW)prophesy against the (BX)forest [ae]land of the Negev, 47 and say to the forest of the Negev, ‘Hear the word of the Lord: this is what the Lord God says: “Behold, I am going to (BY)kindle a fire in you, and it will consume every [af]green tree in you, as well as every dry tree; the blazing flame will not go out and [ag](BZ)the entire surface from south to north will be scorched by it. 48 And all [ah]mankind will see that I, the Lord, have kindled it; it will (CA)not go out.”’” 49 Then I said, “Oh, Lord God! They are saying of me, ‘Is he not just speaking in (CB)riddles?’”

Parable of the Sword of the Lord

21 [ai]And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2 “Son of man, (CC)set your face against Jerusalem, and [aj](CD)speak prophetically against the sanctuaries and prophesy against the land of Israel; 3 and say to the land of Israel, ‘This is what the Lord says: “Behold, (CE)I am against you; and I will draw My sword from its sheath and cut off from you the (CF)righteous and the wicked. 4 Because I will cut off from you the righteous and the wicked, therefore My sword will go out from its sheath against [ak](CG)humanity from south to north. 5 So [al]humanity will know that I, the Lord, have drawn My sword from its sheath. It will (CH)not return to its sheath again.”’ 6 As for you, son of man, groan with [am]a breaking heart and bitter grief; you shall groan in their sight. 7 And when they say to you, ‘Why are you groaning?’ you shall say, ‘Because of the (CI)news, for it is coming; and (CJ)every heart will melt, all hands will go limp, every spirit will be disheartened, and all [an]knees will drip with water. Behold, it is coming and it will happen,’ declares the Lord [ao]God.”

8 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 9 “Son of man, prophesy and say, ‘This is what the Lord says:’ Say,

‘(CK)A sword, a sword sharpened
And also polished!
10 Sharpened to make a (CL)slaughter,
Polished [ap]to flash like lightning!’

Or shall we rejoice, the [aq]rod of My son (CM)despising every tree? 11 And it is given to be polished, so that it may be handled; the sword is sharpened and polished, to hand it over to the slaughterer. 12 (CN)Cry out and wail, son of man; for it is against My people, it is against all the (CO)officials of Israel. They are turned over to the sword with My people, therefore [ar]slap your thigh. 13 For there is a testing; and what if even the [as]rod which despises will cease to be?” declares the Lord God.

14 “You therefore, son of man, prophesy and clap your hands; and let the sword be (CP)doubled the third time, the sword for the slain. It is the sword for the great one slain, which surrounds them, 15 so that their (CQ)hearts will waver, and many (CR)fall at all their (CS)gates. I have granted the slaughter of the sword. Oh! It is made for striking like lightning, it is sharpened in readiness for slaughter. 16 Prove yourself sharp, go to the right; set yourself; go to the left, wherever your [at]edge is ordered. 17 I will also clap My hands, and I will (CT)satisfy My wrath; I, the Lord, have spoken.”

The Instrument of God’s Judgment

18 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 19 “Now as for you, son of man, [au](CU)make two ways for the sword of the king of Babylon to come; both of them will go out of one land. And [av]make a signpost; [aw]make it at the head of the way to the city. 20 You shall [ax]mark a way for the sword to come to (CV)Rabbah of the sons of Ammon, and to Judah into (CW)fortified Jerusalem. 21 For the king of Babylon stands at the [ay]parting of the way, at the head of the two ways, to use (CX)divination; he (CY)shakes the arrows, he consults the [az](CZ)household idols, he looks at the liver. 22 Into his right hand came the divination, ‘Jerusalem,’ to (DA)set up battering rams, to open the mouth [ba]for [bb]slaughter, to raise the voice with a battle cry, to set up battering rams against the gates, to pile up assault ramps, to build a siege wall. 23 And it will be to them like a false divination in their eyes; (DB)they have sworn solemn oaths. But he (DC)makes guilt known, so that they may be seized.

24 “Therefore, this is what the Lord God says: ‘Because you have made your guilt known, in that your offenses are uncovered, so that in all your deeds your sins are seen—because you have come to mind, you will be seized by the hand. 25 And you, slain, wicked one, the prince of Israel, whose (DD)day has come, in the time of the [bc]punishment of the end,’ 26 this is what the Lord God says: ‘Remove the [bd]turban and take off the (DE)crown; this will [be]no longer be the same. (DF)Exalt that which is low, and humble that which is high. 27 (DG)Ruins, ruins, ruins, I will make it! This also will be no longer until (DH)He comes whose right it is, and I will give it to Him.’

28 “And you, son of man, prophesy and say, ‘This is what the Lord God says concerning the sons of Ammon and their (DI)taunting,’ and say: ‘A sword, a sword is drawn, sharpened for the slaughter, to make it [bf](DJ)consume, so that it may be like lightning— 29 while they see (DK)false visions for you, while they divine lies for you—to place you on the necks of the wicked who are killed, whose day has come, in the (DL)time of the [bg]punishment of the end. 30 (DM)Return it to its sheath. In the (DN)place where you were created, in the land of your origin, I will judge you. 31 I will (DO)pour out My indignation on you; I will (DP)blow on you with the fire of My wrath, and I will hand you over to brutal men, (DQ)craftsmen of destruction. 32 You will be [bh](DR)fuel for the fire; your blood will be in the midst of the land. You will (DS)not be remembered, for I, the Lord, have spoken.’”

The Sins of Israel

22 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2 “And you, son of man, will you judge, will you judge the bloody city? Then inform her of all her abominations. 3 And you shall say, ‘This is what the Lord [bi]God says: “A city (DT)shedding blood in her midst, so that her time is coming; and a city that makes idols, contrary to her own good, for defilement! 4 You have become (DU)guilty by [bj]the blood which you have shed, and you have become defiled by your idols which you have made. So you have brought your days closer and have come to your years; therefore I have made you a (DV)disgrace to the nations, and an object of mocking to all the lands. 5 Those who are near and those who are far from you will make fun of you, you of ill repute, full of (DW)turmoil.

6 “Behold, the (DX)rulers of Israel, each according to his [bk]power, have been among you for the purpose of shedding blood. 7 They have (DY)treated father and mother with contempt among you. They have oppressed the (DZ)stranger in your midst; they have oppressed the (EA)orphan and the widow among you. 8 You have (EB)despised My holy things and (EC)profaned My Sabbaths. 9 Slanderous men have been among you for the purpose of shedding blood, and among you they have eaten at the mountain shrines. In your midst they have (ED)committed outrageous sin. 10 Among you [bl]they have (EE)uncovered their fathers’ nakedness; among you they have abused her who was (EF)unclean in her menstruation. 11 And one has committed abomination with his (EG)neighbor’s wife, another has outrageously defiled his (EH)daughter-in-law, and another among you has sexually (EI)abused his sister, his father’s daughter. 12 Among you they have (EJ)taken bribes to shed blood; you have taken [bm](EK)interest, you have injured your neighbors by (EL)oppression, and you have (EM)forgotten Me,” declares the Lord God.

13 “Behold, then, I strike with My hand your (EN)profit which you have made and [bn]the bloodshed which is among you. 14 Can (EO)your heart endure, or can your hands be strong for the days that I will deal with you? (EP)I, the Lord, have spoken and will act. 15 And I will (EQ)scatter you among the nations and disperse you among the lands, and I will (ER)eliminate your uncleanness from you. 16 Then you will defile yourself in the sight of the nations, and you will (ES)know that I am the Lord.”’”
