⁹ “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: You have gone far enough, princes of Israel! Give up your violence and oppression^(A) and do what is just and right.^(B) Stop dispossessing my people, declares the Sovereign Lord.

³ This is what the Lord says: Do what is just^(A) and right. Rescue from the hand of the oppressor^(B) the one who has been robbed. Do no wrong or violence to the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow,^(C) and do not shed innocent blood^(D) in this place.

¹⁶ These are the things you are to do: Speak the truth^(A) to each other, and render true and sound judgment^(B) in your courts;^(C)

¹⁰ “What should we do then?”^(A) the crowd asked.

¹¹ John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.”^(B)

¹² Even tax collectors came to be baptized.^(C) “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?”

¹³ “Don’t collect any more than you are required to,”^(D) he told them.

¹⁴ Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?”

He replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely^(E)—be content with your pay.”
