⁹ The Lord said to Moses, “I have seen this people, how stiff-necked they are.^{(A) 10} Now let me alone so that my wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them, and of you I will make a great nation.”^(B)

³ Go up^[a] to a land flowing with milk and honey, but I will not go up among you, or I would consume you on the way, for you are a stiff-necked people.”^(A)

⁴ When the people heard these harsh words, they mourned, and no one put on ornaments.^{(B) 5} For the Lord had said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘You are a stiff-necked people; if for a single moment I should go up among you, I would consume you. So now take off your ornaments, and I will decide what to do to you.’ ” ⁶ Therefore the Israelites stripped themselves of their ornaments, from Mount Horeb onward.

⁸ And Moses quickly bowed down to the ground and worshiped.^{(A) 9} He said, “If now I have found favor in your sight, my Lord, I pray, let my Lord go with us. Although this is a stiff-necked people, pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for your inheritance.”^(B)
