Water in the Rock

17 Then all the congregation of the sons of Israel journeyed by [a]stages from the wilderness of (A)Sin, according to the [b]command of the Lord, and camped at (B)Rephidim, and there was no water for the people to drink. So the people (C)quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water so that we may drink!” And Moses said to them, “(D)Why do you quarrel with me? (E)Why do you test the Lord?” But the people were thirsty for water there; and [c]they (F)grumbled against Moses and said, “Why is it that you have you brought us up from Egypt, to kill [d]us and [e]our children and [f](G)our livestock with thirst?” So Moses cried out to the Lord, saying, “What am I to do with this people? A (H)little more and they will stone me!” Then the Lord said to Moses, “Pass before the people and take with you some of (I)the elders of Israel; and take in your hand your staff with which (J)you struck the Nile, and go. Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at (K)Horeb; and (L)you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, so that the people may drink.” And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel. Then he named the place [g](M)Massah and [h](N)Meribah because of the quarrel of the sons of Israel, and because they (O)tested the Lord, saying, “Is the Lord among us, or not?”

Miraculous Battle against Amalek

Then (P)Amalek came and fought against Israel at (Q)Rephidim. So Moses said to (R)Joshua, “Choose men for us and go out, fight against Amalek. Tomorrow I will station myself on the top of the hill with (S)the staff of God in my hand.” 10 Joshua did just as Moses [i]told him, [j]and fought against Amalek; and Moses, Aaron, and (T)Hur went up to the top of the hill. 11 So it came about, when Moses held his hand up, that Israel prevailed; but when he let his hand [k]down, Amalek prevailed. 12 And Moses’ hands were heavy. So they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it; and Aaron and Hur (U)supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other. So his hands were steady until the sun set. 13 And Joshua [l]defeated Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

14 Then the Lord said to Moses, “(V)Write this in [m]a book as a memorial and [n]recite it to Joshua, [o]that (W)I will utterly wipe out the memory of Amalek from under heaven.” 15 And Moses built an (X)altar and named it (Y)The Lord is My Banner; 16 and he said, “[p](Z)Because the Lord has sworn, the Lord will have war against Amalek from generation to generation.”

Jethro, Moses’ Father-in-law

18 Now (AA)Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses’ father-in-law, heard about everything that God had done for Moses and for Israel His people, how the Lord had brought Israel out of Egypt. And Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, took in Moses’ wife (AB)Zipporah, after he had sent her away, and her (AC)two sons, [q]one of whom was named Gershom, for Moses said, “I have been (AD)a stranger in a foreign land.” And [r]the other was named [s](AE)Eliezer, for he said, “(AF)The God of my father was my help, and saved me from the sword of Pharaoh.”

Then Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, came with his sons and his wife to Moses [t]in the wilderness where he was camped, at (AG)the mountain of God. And he [u]sent word to Moses: “I, your father-in-law Jethro, am coming to you with your wife and her two sons with her.” Then Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, and (AH)he bowed down and (AI)kissed him; and they (AJ)asked each other about their welfare, and went into the tent. Moses told his father-in-law everything that the Lord had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians (AK)for Israel’s sake, all the (AL)hardship that had confronted them on the journey, and how (AM)the Lord had rescued them. And Jethro rejoiced over all (AN)the goodness which the Lord had done for Israel, [v]in rescuing [w]them from the hand of the Egyptians. 10 So Jethro said, “(AO)Blessed be the Lord who rescued you from the hand of the Egyptians and from the hand of Pharaoh, and who rescued the people from under the hand of the Egyptians. 11 Now I know that (AP)the Lord is greater than all the gods; indeed, [x](AQ)it was proven when they acted insolently against [y]the people.” 12 (AR)Then Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, took a burnt offering and sacrifices for God, and Aaron came with all the elders of Israel to eat [z]a meal with Moses’ father-in-law before God.

Jethro Counsels Moses

13 And it came about the next day, that Moses sat to judge the people, and the people stood before Moses from the morning until the evening. 14 Now when Moses’ father-in-law saw all that he was doing for the people, he said, “What is this thing that you are doing for the people? Why do you alone sit as judge and all the people stand before you from morning until evening?” 15 Moses said to his father-in-law, “Because the people come to me (AS)to inquire of God. 16 When they have a [aa](AT)dispute, it comes to me, and I judge between someone and his neighbor and make known the statutes of God and His laws.” 17 Moses’ father-in-law then said to him, “The thing that you are doing is not good. 18 (AU)You will surely wear out, both yourself and [ab]these people who are with you, because the [ac]task is too heavy for you; (AV)you cannot do it alone. 19 Now listen to [ad]me: I will give you counsel, and God be with you. [ae]You be the people’s representative before God, and you (AW)bring the [af]disputes to God, 20 (AX)then admonish them about the statutes and the laws, and make known to them (AY)the way in which they are to walk and the work they are to do. 21 Furthermore, you shall [ag]select out of all the people (AZ)able men (BA)who fear God, men of truth, those who (BB)hate dishonest gain; and you shall place these over them as leaders of thousands, [ah]of hundreds, [ai]of fifties, and [aj]of tens. 22 Let them judge the people at all times; and let it be (BC)that they will bring to you every major matter, but they will judge every minor matter themselves. So it will be easier for you, and (BD)they will carry the burden with you. 23 If you do this thing and God so commands you, then you will be able to [ak]endure, and all [al]these people also will go to [am]their places in peace.”

24 So Moses listened [an]to his father-in-law and did everything that he had said. 25 Moses chose (BE)able men out of all Israel and made them heads over the people, leaders of thousands, [ao]of hundreds, [ap]of fifties, and [aq]of tens. 26 Then they judged the people at all times; (BF)they would bring the difficult matter to Moses, but they would judge every minor matter themselves. 27 Then Moses [ar](BG)said goodbye to his father-in-law, and [as]Jethro went his way to his own land.

Moses on Sinai

19 (BH)In the third month after the sons of Israel had gone out of the land of Egypt, [at]on that very day they came into the wilderness of (BI)Sinai. When they set out from (BJ)Rephidim, they came to the wilderness of Sinai and camped in the wilderness; and there Israel camped in front of (BK)the mountain. And Moses went up to God, and (BL)the Lord called to him from the mountain, saying, “This is what you shall say to the house of Jacob and tell the sons of Israel: (BM)You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I carried you on (BN)eagles’ wings, and brought you to Myself. Now then, (BO)if you will indeed obey My voice and (BP)keep My covenant, then you shall be (BQ)My [au]own possession among all the peoples, for (BR)all the earth is Mine; and you shall be to Me (BS)a kingdom of priests and (BT)a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the sons of Israel.”

(BU)So Moses came and called the elders of the people, and set before them all these words which the Lord had commanded him. Then (BV)all the people answered together and said, “All that the Lord has spoken we will do!” And Moses brought back the words of the people to the Lord. Then the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I will come to you in (BW)a thick cloud, so that the (BX)people may hear when I speak with you and may also trust in you forever.” Then Moses told the words of the people to the Lord.

10 The Lord also said to Moses, “Go to the people and (BY)consecrate them today and tomorrow, and have them (BZ)wash their garments; 11 and have them ready for the third day, for on (CA)the third day the Lord will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people. 12 But you shall set boundaries for the people all around, saying, ‘[av]Beware that you do not go up on the mountain or touch the border of it; (CB)whoever touches the mountain shall certainly be put to death. 13 No hand shall touch him, but (CC)he shall certainly be stoned or [aw]shot through; whether animal or person, the violator shall not live.’ When the ram’s horn sounds a long blast, they shall come up to (CD)the mountain.” 14 So Moses went down from the mountain to the people and consecrated the people, and they washed their garments. 15 He also said to the people, “Be ready for the third day; do not go near a woman.”

16 (CE)So it came about on the third day, when it was morning, that there were [ax]thunder and lightning flashes and a thick cloud over the mountain and a very loud trumpet sound, so that all the people who were in the camp trembled. 17 And Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they stood at the [ay]foot of the mountain.

The Lord Visits Sinai

18 (CF)Now Mount Sinai was all in smoke because the Lord descended upon it (CG)in fire; and its smoke ascended like (CH)the smoke of a furnace, and (CI)the entire mountain [az]quaked violently. 19 When the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke, and (CJ)God answered him with [ba]thunder. 20 Then (CK)the Lord came down on Mount Sinai, to the top of the mountain; and the Lord called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up. 21 Then the Lord spoke to Moses: “Go down, [bb]warn the people, so that (CL)they do not break through to the Lord to stare, and many of them [bc]perish. 22 Also have the (CM)priests who approach the Lord consecrate themselves, or else the Lord will break out against them.” 23 And Moses said to the Lord, “The people cannot come up to Mount Sinai, for You [bd]warned us, saying, ‘(CN)Set boundaries around the mountain and consecrate it.’” 24 Then the Lord said to him, “[be]Go down and come up again, (CO)you and Aaron with you; but do not let the (CP)priests and the people break through to come up to the Lord, or He will break out against them.” 25 So Moses went down to the people and told them.

The Ten Commandments

20 Then God spoke all these words, saying,

(CQ)I am the Lord your God, (CR)who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of [bf]slavery.

(CS)You shall have no other (CT)gods [bg]before Me.

(CU)You shall not make for yourself [bh]an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath, or in the water under the earth. (CV)You shall not worship them nor serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a (CW)jealous God, (CX)inflicting the [bi]punishment of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing [bj]favor to (CY)thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.

(CZ)You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not [bk]leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain.

“Remember (DA)the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. (DB)For six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath of the Lord your God; on it (DC)you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male slave or your female slave, or your cattle, or your [bl]resident who [bm]stays with you. 11 (DD)For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and everything that is in them, and He rested on the seventh day; for that reason the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

12 (DE)Honor your father and your mother, so that your (DF)days may be prolonged on the land which the Lord your God gives you.

13 (DG)You shall not murder.

14 (DH)You shall not commit adultery.

15 (DI)You shall not steal.

16 (DJ)You shall not [bn]give false testimony against your (DK)neighbor.

17 (DL)You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; (DM)you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male slave, or his female slave, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”

18 And (DN)all the people were watching and hearing the [bo]thunder and the lightning flashes, and the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it all, they trembled and stood at a distance. 19 (DO)Then they said to Moses, “Speak [bp]to us yourself and we will listen; but do not have God speak [bq]to us, or we will die!” 20 However, Moses said to the people, “(DP)Do not be afraid; for God has come in order (DQ)to test you, and in order that (DR)the fear of Him may [br]remain with you, so that you will not sin.” 21 So the people stood at a distance, while Moses approached (DS)the thick darkness where God was.

22 Then the Lord said to Moses, “This is what you shall say to the sons of Israel: ‘You yourselves have seen that (DT)I have spoken [bs]to you from heaven. 23 (DU)You shall not make other gods besides Me; (DV)gods of silver or gods of gold, you shall not make for yourselves. 24 You shall make (DW)an altar of earth for Me, and you shall sacrifice on it your (DX)burnt offerings and your (DY)peace offerings, (DZ)your sheep and your oxen; in every place (EA)where I cause My name to be remembered, I will come to you and bless you. 25 And if you make an altar of stone for Me, (EB)you shall not build it of cut stones, for if you wield your chisel on it, you will profane it. 26 And you shall not go up by steps to My altar, so that (EC)your nakedness will not be exposed on it.’

Water From the Rock

17 The whole Israelite community set out from the Desert of Sin,(A) traveling from place to place as the Lord commanded. They camped at Rephidim,(B) but there was no water(C) for the people to drink. So they quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water(D) to drink.”(E)

Moses replied, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you put the Lord to the test?”(F)

But the people were thirsty(G) for water there, and they grumbled(H) against Moses. They said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to make us and our children and livestock die(I) of thirst?”

Then Moses cried out to the Lord, “What am I to do with these people? They are almost ready to stone(J) me.”

The Lord answered Moses, “Go out in front of the people. Take with you some of the elders of Israel and take in your hand the staff(K) with which you struck the Nile,(L) and go. I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb.(M) Strike(N) the rock, and water(O) will come out of it for the people to drink.” So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel. And he called the place Massah[a](P) and Meribah[b](Q) because the Israelites quarreled and because they tested the Lord saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”

The Amalekites Defeated

The Amalekites(R) came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim.(S) Moses said to Joshua,(T) “Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff(U) of God in my hands.”

10 So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron and Hur(V) went to the top of the hill. 11 As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning,(W) but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. 12 When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset.(X) 13 So Joshua overcame the Amalekite(Y) army with the sword.

14 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write(Z) this on a scroll as something to be remembered and make sure that Joshua hears it, because I will completely blot out(AA) the name of Amalek(AB) from under heaven.”

15 Moses built an altar(AC) and called(AD) it The Lord is my Banner. 16 He said, “Because hands were lifted up against[c] the throne of the Lord,[d] the Lord will be at war against the Amalekites(AE) from generation to generation.”(AF)

Jethro Visits Moses

18 Now Jethro,(AG) the priest of Midian(AH) and father-in-law of Moses, heard of everything God had done for Moses and for his people Israel, and how the Lord had brought Israel out of Egypt.(AI)

After Moses had sent away his wife Zipporah,(AJ) his father-in-law Jethro received her and her two sons.(AK) One son was named Gershom,[e] for Moses said, “I have become a foreigner in a foreign land”;(AL) and the other was named Eliezer,[f](AM) for he said, “My father’s God was my helper;(AN) he saved me from the sword of Pharaoh.”

Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, together with Moses’ sons and wife, came to him in the wilderness, where he was camped near the mountain(AO) of God. Jethro had sent word to him, “I, your father-in-law Jethro, am coming to you with your wife and her two sons.”

So Moses went out to meet his father-in-law and bowed down(AP) and kissed(AQ) him. They greeted each other and then went into the tent. Moses told his father-in-law about everything the Lord had done to Pharaoh and the Egyptians for Israel’s sake and about all the hardships(AR) they had met along the way and how the Lord had saved(AS) them.

Jethro was delighted to hear about all the good things(AT) the Lord had done for Israel in rescuing them from the hand of the Egyptians. 10 He said, “Praise be to the Lord,(AU) who rescued you from the hand of the Egyptians and of Pharaoh, and who rescued the people from the hand of the Egyptians. 11 Now I know that the Lord is greater than all other gods,(AV) for he did this to those who had treated Israel arrogantly.”(AW) 12 Then Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law,(AX) brought a burnt offering(AY) and other sacrifices(AZ) to God, and Aaron came with all the elders of Israel to eat a meal(BA) with Moses’ father-in-law in the presence(BB) of God.

13 The next day Moses took his seat to serve as judge for the people, and they stood around him from morning till evening. 14 When his father-in-law saw all that Moses was doing for the people, he said, “What is this you are doing for the people? Why do you alone sit as judge, while all these people stand around you from morning till evening?”

15 Moses answered him, “Because the people come to me to seek God’s will.(BC) 16 Whenever they have a dispute,(BD) it is brought to me, and I decide between the parties and inform them of God’s decrees and instructions.”(BE)

17 Moses’ father-in-law replied, “What you are doing is not good. 18 You and these people who come to you will only wear yourselves out. The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone.(BF) 19 Listen now to me and I will give you some advice, and may God be with you.(BG) You must be the people’s representative before God and bring their disputes(BH) to him. 20 Teach them his decrees and instructions,(BI) and show them the way they are to live(BJ) and how they are to behave.(BK) 21 But select capable men(BL) from all the people—men who fear(BM) God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain(BN)—and appoint them as officials(BO) over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens. 22 Have them serve as judges for the people at all times, but have them bring every difficult case(BP) to you; the simple cases they can decide themselves. That will make your load lighter, because they will share(BQ) it with you. 23 If you do this and God so commands, you will be able to stand the strain, and all these people will go home satisfied.”

24 Moses listened to his father-in-law and did everything he said. 25 He chose capable men from all Israel and made them leaders(BR) of the people, officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens.(BS) 26 They served as judges(BT) for the people at all times. The difficult cases(BU) they brought to Moses, but the simple ones they decided themselves.(BV)

27 Then Moses sent his father-in-law on his way, and Jethro returned to his own country.(BW)

At Mount Sinai

19 On the first day of the third month after the Israelites left Egypt(BX)—on that very day—they came to the Desert of Sinai.(BY) After they set out from Rephidim,(BZ) they entered the Desert of Sinai, and Israel camped there in the desert in front of the mountain.(CA)

Then Moses went up to God,(CB) and the Lord called(CC) to him from the mountain and said, “This is what you are to say to the descendants of Jacob and what you are to tell the people of Israel: ‘You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt,(CD) and how I carried you on eagles’ wings(CE) and brought you to myself.(CF) Now if you obey me fully(CG) and keep my covenant,(CH) then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession.(CI) Although the whole earth(CJ) is mine, you[g] will be for me a kingdom of priests(CK) and a holy nation.’(CL) These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites.”

So Moses went back and summoned the elders(CM) of the people and set before them all the words the Lord had commanded him to speak.(CN) The people all responded together, “We will do everything the Lord has said.”(CO) So Moses brought their answer back to the Lord.

The Lord said to Moses, “I am going to come to you in a dense cloud,(CP) so that the people will hear me speaking(CQ) with you and will always put their trust(CR) in you.” Then Moses told the Lord what the people had said.

10 And the Lord said to Moses, “Go to the people and consecrate(CS) them today and tomorrow. Have them wash their clothes(CT) 11 and be ready by the third day,(CU) because on that day the Lord will come down(CV) on Mount Sinai(CW) in the sight of all the people. 12 Put limits(CX) for the people around the mountain and tell them, ‘Be careful that you do not approach the mountain or touch the foot of it. Whoever touches the mountain is to be put to death. 13 They are to be stoned(CY) or shot with arrows; not a hand is to be laid on them. No person or animal shall be permitted to live.’ Only when the ram’s horn(CZ) sounds a long blast may they approach the mountain.”(DA)

14 After Moses had gone down the mountain to the people, he consecrated them, and they washed their clothes.(DB) 15 Then he said to the people, “Prepare yourselves for the third day. Abstain(DC) from sexual relations.”

16 On the morning of the third day there was thunder(DD) and lightning, with a thick cloud(DE) over the mountain, and a very loud trumpet blast.(DF) Everyone in the camp trembled.(DG) 17 Then Moses led the people out of the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain.(DH) 18 Mount Sinai was covered with smoke,(DI) because the Lord descended on it in fire.(DJ) The smoke billowed up from it like smoke from a furnace,(DK) and the whole mountain[h] trembled(DL) violently. 19 As the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke and the voice(DM) of God answered(DN) him.[i]

20 The Lord descended to the top of Mount Sinai(DO) and called Moses to the top of the mountain. So Moses went up 21 and the Lord said to him, “Go down and warn the people so they do not force their way through to see(DP) the Lord and many of them perish.(DQ) 22 Even the priests, who approach(DR) the Lord, must consecrate(DS) themselves, or the Lord will break out against them.”(DT)

23 Moses said to the Lord, “The people cannot come up Mount Sinai,(DU) because you yourself warned us, ‘Put limits(DV) around the mountain and set it apart as holy.’”

24 The Lord replied, “Go down and bring Aaron(DW) up with you. But the priests and the people must not force their way through to come up to the Lord, or he will break out against them.”(DX)

25 So Moses went down to the people and told them.

The Ten Commandments(DY)

20 And God spoke(DZ) all these words:(EA)

“I am the Lord your God,(EB) who brought you out(EC) of Egypt,(ED) out of the land of slavery.(EE)

“You shall have no other gods before[j] me.(EF)

“You shall not make for yourself an image(EG) in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship(EH) them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God,(EI) punishing the children for the sin of the parents(EJ) to the third and fourth generation(EK) of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand(EL) generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.

“You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.(EM)

“Remember the Sabbath(EN) day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work,(EO) 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath(EP) to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth,(EQ) the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested(ER) on the seventh day.(ES) Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

12 “Honor your father and your mother,(ET) so that you may live long(EU) in the land(EV) the Lord your God is giving you.

18 When the people saw the thunder and lightning and heard the trumpet(FC) and saw the mountain in smoke,(FD) they trembled with fear.(FE) They stayed at a distance 19 and said to Moses, “Speak to us yourself and we will listen. But do not have God speak(FF) to us or we will die.”(FG)

20 Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid.(FH) God has come to test(FI) you, so that the fear(FJ) of God will be with you to keep you from sinning.”(FK)

21 The people remained at a distance, while Moses approached the thick darkness(FL) where God was.

Idols and Altars

22 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Tell the Israelites this: ‘You have seen for yourselves that I have spoken to you from heaven:(FM) 23 Do not make any gods to be alongside me;(FN) do not make for yourselves gods of silver or gods of gold.(FO)

24 “‘Make an altar(FP) of earth for me and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings(FQ) and fellowship offerings, your sheep and goats and your cattle. Wherever I cause my name(FR) to be honored, I will come to you and bless(FS) you. 25 If you make an altar of stones for me, do not build it with dressed stones, for you will defile it if you use a tool(FT) on it. 26 And do not go up to my altar on steps, or your private parts(FU) may be exposed.’

Healing the Beggar Who Was Unable to Walk

Now (A)Peter and John were going up to the temple at the [a]ninth hour, (B)the hour of prayer. And (C)a man who had been unable to walk from [b]birth was being carried, whom they (D)used to set down every day at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, (E)in order for him to beg for charitable gifts from those entering the temple grounds. When he saw (F)Peter and John about to go into the temple grounds, he began asking to receive a charitable gift. But Peter, along with John, (G)looked at him intently and said, “Look at us!” And he gave them his attention, expecting to receive something from them. But Peter said, “I do not have silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you: (H)In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, walk!” And grasping him by the right hand, he raised him up; and immediately his feet and his ankles were strengthened. And (I)leaping up, he stood and began to walk; and he entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God. And (J)all the people saw him walking and praising God; 10 and they recognized him as being the very one who used to (K)sit at the Beautiful Gate of the temple to beg for charitable gifts, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.

Peter’s Second Sermon

11 While he was clinging to (L)Peter and John, all the people ran together to them at the [c](M)portico named Solomon’s, completely astonished. 12 But when Peter saw this, he replied to the people, “Men of Israel, why are you amazed at this, or why are you staring at us, as though by our own power or godliness we had made him walk? 13 (N)The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, (O)the God of our fathers, has glorified His [d](P)servant Jesus, the one whom (Q)you handed over and disowned in the presence of (R)Pilate, when he had (S)decided to release Him. 14 But you disowned (T)the Holy and Righteous One, and (U)asked for a murderer to be granted to you, 15 but put to death the [e](V)Prince of life, whom (W)God raised from the dead, [f]a fact to which we are (X)witnesses. 16 And on the basis of faith (Y)in His name, it is [g]the name of Jesus which has strengthened this man whom you see and know; and the faith which comes through Him has given him this perfect health in the presence of you all.

17 “And now, brothers, I know that you acted (Z)in ignorance, just as your (AA)rulers also did. 18 But the things which (AB)God previously announced by the mouths of all the prophets, (AC)that His [h]Christ would suffer, He has fulfilled in this way. 19 Therefore (AD)repent and return, so that your sins may be wiped away, in order that (AE)times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord; 20 and that He may send Jesus, the [i]Christ appointed for you, 21 (AF)whom heaven must receive until the [j]period of (AG)restoration of all things, about which (AH)God spoke by the mouths of His holy prophets from ancient times. 22 Moses said, ‘(AI)The Lord God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your countrymen; to Him you shall listen regarding everything He says to you. 23 (AJ)And it shall be that every (AK)soul that does not listen to that prophet (AL)shall be utterly destroyed from among the people.’ 24 And likewise, (AM)all the prophets who have spoken from Samuel and his successors onward, have also announced these days. 25 It is you who are (AN)the sons of the prophets and of the (AO)covenant which God ordained with your fathers, saying to Abraham, ‘(AP)And in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed.’ 26 God (AQ)raised up His [k]Servant for you (AR)first, and sent Him to bless you by turning every one of you from your wicked ways.”

Peter Heals a Lame Beggar

One day Peter and John(A) were going up to the temple(B) at the time of prayer—at three in the afternoon.(C) Now a man who was lame from birth(D) was being carried to the temple gate(E) called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg(F) from those going into the temple courts. When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money. Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, “Look at us!” So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them.

Then Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,(G) walk.” Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong. He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping,(H) and praising God. When all the people(I) saw him walking and praising God, 10 they recognized him as the same man who used to sit begging at the temple gate called Beautiful,(J) and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.

Peter Speaks to the Onlookers

11 While the man held on to Peter and John,(K) all the people were astonished and came running to them in the place called Solomon’s Colonnade.(L) 12 When Peter saw this, he said to them: “Fellow Israelites, why does this surprise you? Why do you stare at us as if by our own power or godliness we had made this man walk? 13 The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob,(M) the God of our fathers,(N) has glorified his servant Jesus. You handed him over(O) to be killed, and you disowned him before Pilate,(P) though he had decided to let him go.(Q) 14 You disowned the Holy(R) and Righteous One(S) and asked that a murderer be released to you.(T) 15 You killed the author of life, but God raised him from the dead.(U) We are witnesses(V) of this. 16 By faith in the name of Jesus,(W) this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus’ name and the faith that comes through him that has completely healed him, as you can all see.

17 “Now, fellow Israelites,(X) I know that you acted in ignorance,(Y) as did your leaders.(Z) 18 But this is how God fulfilled(AA) what he had foretold(AB) through all the prophets,(AC) saying that his Messiah would suffer.(AD) 19 Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out,(AE) that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, 20 and that he may send the Messiah,(AF) who has been appointed for you—even Jesus. 21 Heaven must receive him(AG) until the time comes for God to restore everything,(AH) as he promised long ago through his holy prophets.(AI) 22 For Moses said, ‘The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own people; you must listen to everything he tells you.(AJ) 23 Anyone who does not listen to him will be completely cut off from their people.’[a](AK)

24 “Indeed, beginning with Samuel, all the prophets(AL) who have spoken have foretold these days. 25 And you are heirs(AM) of the prophets and of the covenant(AN) God made with your fathers. He said to Abraham, ‘Through your offspring all peoples on earth will be blessed.’[b](AO) 26 When God raised up(AP) his servant, he sent him first(AQ) to you to bless you by turning each of you from your wicked ways.”
