³¹ Thus Israel saw the great ^[a]work which the Lord had done in Egypt; so the people feared the Lord, and ^(A)believed the Lord and His servant Moses.

¹⁰ Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go to the people and ^(A)consecrate them today and tomorrow, and let them wash their clothes. ¹¹ And let them be ready for the third day. For on the third day the Lord will come down upon Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people. ¹² You shall set bounds for the people all around, saying, ‘Take heed to yourselves that you do not go up to the mountain or touch its base. ^(B)Whoever touches the mountain shall surely be put to death. ¹³ Not a hand shall touch him, but he shall surely be stoned or shot with an arrow; whether man or beast, he shall not live.’ When the trumpet sounds long, they shall come near the mountain.”

¹⁴ So Moses went down from the mountain to the people and sanctified the people, and they washed their clothes. ¹⁵ And he said to the people, “Be ready for the third day; ^(C)do not come near your wives.”

¹⁶ Then it came to pass on the third day, in the morning, that there were ^(D)thunderings and lightnings, and a thick cloud on the mountain; and the sound of the trumpet was very loud, so that all the people who were in the camp ^(E)trembled. ¹⁷ And ^(F)Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain. ¹⁸ Now ^(G)Mount Sinai was completely in smoke, because the Lord descended upon ^(H)it in fire. ^(I)Its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and ^[a]the ^(J)whole mountain quaked greatly.

¹⁹ Then they said to Moses, ^(A)“You speak with us, and we will hear; but ^(B)let not God speak with us, lest we die.”

²⁴ ‘O Lord God, You have begun to show Your servant ^(A)Your greatness and Your ^[a]mighty hand, for ^(B)what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do anything like Your works and Your mighty deeds?

^5 (A)to redeem those who were under the law, ^(B)that we might receive the adoption as sons.

⁶ And because you are sons, God has sent forth ^(C)the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, ^[a]“Abba, Father!” ⁷ Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, ^(D)and if a son, then an heir ^[b]of God ^[c]through Christ.

^5 (A)And Moses indeed was faithful in all His house as ^(B)a servant, ^(C)for a testimony of those things which would be spoken afterward, ⁶ but Christ as ^(D)a Son over His own house, ^(E)whose house we are ^(F)if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope ^[a]firm to the end.

Limitations of the Earthly Service

⁶ Now when these things had been thus prepared, ^(A)the priests always went into the first part of the tabernacle, performing the services. ⁷ But into the second part the high priest went alone ^(B)once a year, not without blood, which he offered for ^(C)himself and for the people’s sins committed in ignorance;

Christ’s Death Perfects the Sanctified

¹¹ And every priest stands ^(A)ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. ^12 (B)But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down ^(C)at the right hand of God, ¹³ from that time waiting ^(D)till His enemies are made His footstool. ¹⁴ For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being ^[a]sanctified.

¹⁵ But the Holy Spirit also witnesses to us; for after He had said before,

^16 (E)“This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds I will write them,” ¹⁷ then He adds, ^(F)“Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.” ¹⁸ Now where there is ^[b]remission of these, there is no longer an offering for sin.

Hold Fast Your Confession

¹⁹ Therefore, brethren, having ^(G)boldness^[c] to enter ^(H)the Holiest by the blood of Jesus,

The Glorious Company

¹⁸ For you have not come ^[a]to ^(A)the mountain that may be touched and that burned with fire, and to blackness and ^[b]darkness and tempest, ¹⁹ and the sound of a trumpet and the voice of words, so that those who heard it ^(B)begged that the word should not be spoken to them anymore. ²⁰ (For they could not endure what was commanded: ^(C)“And if so much as a beast touches the mountain, it shall be stoned ^[c]or shot with an arrow.” ²¹ And so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, ^(D)“I am exceedingly afraid and trembling.”)

²² But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels, ²³ to the ^[d]general assembly and church of ^(E)the firstborn ^(F)who are registered in heaven, to God ^(G)the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men ^(H)made perfect, ²⁴ to Jesus ^(I)the Mediator of the new covenant, and to ^(J)the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things ^(K)than that of Abel.

Hear the Heavenly Voice

²⁵ See that you do not refuse Him who speaks. For ^(L)if they did not escape who refused Him who spoke on earth, much more shall we not escape if we turn away from Him who speaks from heaven, ²⁶ whose voice then shook the earth; but now He has promised, saying, ^(M)“Yet once more I ^[e]shake not only the earth, but also heaven.” ²⁷ Now this, “Yet once more,” indicates the ^(N)removal of those things that are being shaken, as of things that are made, that the things which cannot be shaken may remain.

²⁸ Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we ^[f]may ^(O)serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear.
