But the sons of Israel (A)were fruitful and [a]increased greatly, and multiplied, and became exceedingly [b]mighty, so that the land was filled with them.

Now a new (B)king arose over Egypt, who did not know Joseph. And (C)he said to his people, “Behold, the people of the sons of Israel are [c]too many and too mighty for us. 10 Come, let us (D)deal [d]shrewdly with them, otherwise they will multiply, and [e]in the event of war, they will also join those who hate us, and fight against us and [f]depart from the land.” 11 So they appointed (E)taskmasters over them to oppress them with [g](F)hard labor. And they built for Pharaoh (G)storage cities, Pithom and (H)Raamses.
