The Lord Assures Moses That He Will Have Mercy on Israel

33 Then the Lord said to Moses, “You and the people you brought out of Egypt must leave this place. Go to the land I promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob with an oath, saying, ‘I will give it to your descendants.’ I will send a Messenger ahead of you, and I will force out the Canaanites, Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. Go to that land flowing with milk and honey. But I will not be with you, because you are impossible to deal with, and I would destroy you on the way.”

When the people heard this bad news, they acted as if someone had died. No one wore any jewelry. The Lord had said to Moses, “Tell the Israelites, ‘You are impossible to deal with. If I were with you, I might destroy you at any time. Now take off your jewelry, and I’ll decide what to do with you.’ ” After they left Mount Horeb, the Israelites no longer wore their jewelry.

Now, Moses used to take a tent and set it up far outside the camp. He called it the tent of meeting. Anyone who was seeking the Lord’s will used to go outside the camp to the tent of meeting. Whenever Moses went out to the tent, all the people would rise and stand at the entrances to their tents and watch Moses until he went in. As soon as Moses went into the tent, the column of smoke would come down and stay at the entrance to the tent while the Lord spoke with Moses. 10 When all the people saw the column of smoke standing at the entrance to the tent, they would all bow with their faces touching the ground at the entrance to their own tents. 11 The Lord would speak to Moses personally, as a man speaks to his friend. Then Moses would come back to the camp, but his assistant, Joshua, son of Nun, stayed inside the tent.

12 Moses said to the Lord, “You’ve been telling me to lead these people, but you haven’t let me know whom you’re sending with me. You’ve also said, ‘I know you by name, and I’m pleased with you.’ 13 If you really are pleased with me, show me your ways so that I can know you and so that you will continue to be pleased with me. Remember: This nation is your people.”

14 The Lord answered, “My presence will go ⌞with you,⌟ and I will give you peace.”

15 Then Moses said to him, “If your presence is not going ⌞with us⌟, don’t make us leave this place. 16 How will anyone ever know you’re pleased with your people and me unless you go with us? Then we will be different from all other people on the face of the earth.”

17 The Lord answered Moses, “I will do what you have asked, because I am pleased with you, and I know you by name.”

18 Then Moses said, “Please let me see your glory.”

19 The Lord said, “I will let all my goodness pass in front of you, and there I will call out my name ‘the Lord.’ I will be kind to anyone I want to. I will be merciful to anyone I want to. 20 But you can’t see my face, because no one may see me and live.”

21 Then the Lord said, “Look, there’s a place near me. Stand by this rocky cliff. 22 When my glory passes by, I will put you in a crevice in the cliff and cover you with my hand until I have passed by. 23 Then I will take my hand away, and you’ll see my back, but my face must not be seen.”

The Command to Leave Sinai

33 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Depart and go up from here, you (A)and the people whom you have brought out of the land of Egypt, to the land of which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying, (B)‘To your descendants I will give it.’ (C)And I will send My Angel before you, (D)and I will drive out the Canaanite and the Amorite and the Hittite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Jebusite. Go up (E)to a land flowing with milk and honey; for I will not go up in your midst, lest (F)I [a]consume you on the way, for you are a (G)stiff-necked[b] people.”

And when the people heard this bad news, (H)they mourned, (I)and no one put on his ornaments. For the Lord had said to Moses, “Say to the children of Israel, ‘You are a stiff-necked people. I could come up into your midst in one moment and consume you. Now therefore, take off your [c]ornaments, that I may (J)know what to do to you.’ ” So the children of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments by Mount Horeb.

Moses Meets with the Lord

Moses took his tent and pitched it outside the camp, far from the camp, and (K)called it the tabernacle of meeting. And it came to pass that everyone who (L)sought the Lord went out to the tabernacle of meeting which was outside the camp. So it was, whenever Moses went out to the tabernacle, that all the people rose, and each man stood (M)at his tent door and watched Moses until he had gone into the tabernacle. And it came to pass, when Moses entered the tabernacle, that the pillar of cloud descended and stood at the door of the tabernacle, and the Lord (N)talked with Moses. 10 All the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the tabernacle door, and all the people rose and (O)worshiped, each man in his tent door. 11 So (P)the Lord spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. And he would return to the camp, but (Q)his servant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, did not depart from the tabernacle.

The Promise of God’s Presence

12 Then Moses said to the Lord, “See, (R)You say to me, ‘Bring up this people.’ But You have not let me know whom You will send with me. Yet You have said, (S)‘I know you by name, and you have also found grace in My sight.’ 13 Now therefore, I pray, (T)if I have found grace in Your sight, (U)show me now Your way, that I may know You and that I may find grace in Your sight. And consider that this nation is (V)Your people.”

14 And He said, (W)“My Presence will go with you, and I will give you (X)rest.”

15 Then he said to Him, (Y)“If Your Presence does not go with us, do not bring us up from here. 16 For how then will it be known that Your people and I have found grace in Your sight, (Z)except You go with us? So we (AA)shall be separate, Your people and I, from all the people who are upon the face of the earth.”

17 So the Lord said to Moses, (AB)“I will also do this thing that you have spoken; for you have found grace in My sight, and I know you by name.”

18 And he said, “Please, show me (AC)Your glory.”

19 Then He said, “I will make all My (AD)goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before you. (AE)I will be gracious to whom I will be (AF)gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.” 20 But He said, “You cannot see My face; for (AG)no man shall see Me, and live.” 21 And the Lord said, “Here is a place by Me, and you shall stand on the rock. 22 So it shall be, while My glory passes by, that I will put you (AH)in the cleft of the rock, and will (AI)cover you with My hand while I pass by. 23 Then I will take away My hand, and you shall see My back; but My face shall (AJ)not be seen.”

The Journey Resumed

33 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, “Depart, go up from here, you and the people whom you have brought up from the land of Egypt, to the land of which (A)I swore to Abraham, (B)Isaac, and (C)Jacob, saying, ‘(D)To your [a]descendants I will give it.’ And I will send (E)an angel before you and (F)I will drive out the Canaanite, the Amorite, the Hittite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite. Go up to a land (G)flowing with milk and honey; for I will not go up in your midst, because you are [b](H)an obstinate people, and (I)I might destroy you on the way.”

When the people heard this [c]sad word, (J)they went into mourning, and none of them put on his jewelry. For the Lord had said to Moses, “Say to the sons of Israel, ‘You are [d](K)an obstinate people; if I [e]were to go up in your midst for just one moment, I would destroy you. So now, take off your [f]jewelry that I may know what I shall do to you.’” So the sons of Israel stripped themselves of their jewelry, from Mount Horeb onward.

Now Moses used to take (L)the tent and pitch it outside the camp, a good distance from the camp, and he called it the tent of meeting. And (M)everyone who sought the Lord would go out to the tent of meeting which was outside the camp. And it came about, whenever Moses went out to the tent, that all the people would arise and stand, each at the entrance of his tent, and gaze after Moses until he entered the tent. Whenever Moses entered the tent, (N)the pillar of cloud would descend and stand at the entrance of the tent; (O)and [g]the Lord would speak with Moses. 10 When all the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance of the tent, all the people would stand and worship, each at the entrance of his tent. 11 So (P)the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face, just as a man speaks to his friend. When [h]Moses returned to the camp, (Q)his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, would not depart from the tent.

Moses Intercedes

12 Then Moses said to the Lord, “See, You say to me, ‘(R)Bring up this people!’ But You Yourself have not let me know (S)whom You will send with me. (T)Moreover, You have said, ‘I have known you by name, and you have also found favor in My sight.’ 13 Now then, if I have found favor in Your sight in any way, please (U)let me know Your ways so that I may know You, in order that I may find favor in Your sight. (V)Consider too, that this nation is Your people.” 14 And He said, “(W)My presence shall go with you, and (X)I will give you rest.” 15 Then he said to Him, “(Y)If Your presence does not go with us, do not lead us up from here. 16 For how then can it be known that I have found favor in Your sight, I and Your people? Is it not by Your going with us, so that (Z)we, I and Your people, may be distinguished from all the other people who are on the face of the [i]earth?”

17 The Lord said to Moses, “I will also do this thing of which you have spoken; (AA)for you have found favor in My sight and I have known you by name.” 18 (AB)Then Moses said, “Please, show me Your glory!” 19 And He said, “(AC)I Myself will make all My goodness pass before you, and will proclaim the name of the Lord before you; and (AD)I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show compassion to whom I will show compassion.” 20 He further said, “You cannot see My face, (AE)for mankind shall not see Me and live!” 21 Then the Lord said, “Behold, there is a place [j]by Me, and (AF)you shall stand there on the rock; 22 and it will come about, while My glory is passing by, that I will put you in the cleft of the rock and (AG)cover you with My hand until I have passed by. 23 Then I will take My hand away and you shall see My back, but (AH)My face shall not be seen.”
