The Feast of Unleavened Bread

³ Then Moses said to the people, ^(A)“Remember this day in which you came out from Egypt, out of the house of slavery, ^(B)for by a strong hand the Lord brought you out from this place. ^(C)No leavened bread shall be eaten. ⁴ Today, in the month of ^(D)Abib, you are going out. ⁵ And when the Lord brings you into ^(E)the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, which ^(F)he swore to your fathers to give you, a land ^(G)flowing with milk and honey, ^(H)you shall keep this service in this month. ^6 (I)Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, and on the seventh day there shall be a feast to the Lord. ⁷ Unleavened bread shall be eaten for seven days; no leavened bread shall be seen with you, and no leaven shall be seen with you in all your territory. ^8 (J)You shall tell your son on that day, ‘It is because of what the Lord did for me when I came out of Egypt.’ ⁹ And it shall ^(K)be to you as a sign on your hand and as ^(L)a memorial ^(M)between your eyes, that the law of the Lord may be in your mouth. For with a strong hand the Lord has brought you out of Egypt. ^10 (N)You shall therefore keep this statute at its appointed time from year to year.

¹¹ “When the Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanites, ^(O)as he swore to you and your fathers, and shall give it to you, ^12 (P)you shall set apart to the Lord all that first opens the womb. All the firstborn of your animals that are males shall be the Lord's. ^13 (Q)Every firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb, or if you will not redeem it you shall break its neck. Every ^(R)firstborn of man among your sons you shall redeem. ^14 (S)And when in time to come your son asks you, ‘What does this mean?’ you shall say to him, ^(T)‘By a strong hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, from the house of ^(U)slavery. ¹⁵ For when Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go, the ^(V)Lord killed all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both the firstborn of man and the firstborn of animals. Therefore I sacrifice to the Lord all the males that first open the womb, but ^(W)all the firstborn of my sons I redeem.’ ^16 (X)It shall be as a mark on your hand or frontlets between your eyes, for ^(Y)by a strong hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt.”

^9 (A)“Only take care, and ^(B)keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. ^(C)Make them known to your children and your children's children— ¹⁰ how on ^(D)the day that you stood before the Lord your God at Horeb, the Lord said to me, ^(E)‘Gather the people to me, that I may let them hear my words, ^(F)so that they may learn to fear ^(G)me all the days that they live on the earth, and that they may teach their children so.’ ¹¹ And ^(H)you came near and stood at the foot of the mountain, while ^(I)the mountain burned with fire to the heart of heaven, wrapped in darkness, cloud, and gloom. ¹² Then ^(J)the Lord spoke to you out of the midst of the fire. You heard the sound of words, ^(K)but saw no form; ^(L)there was only a voice. ^13 (M)And he declared to you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, that is, ^(N)the Ten Commandments,^{[a] (O)}and he wrote them on two tablets of stone. ¹⁴ And ^(P)the Lord commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and rules, that you might do them in the land that you are going over to possess.

^18 (A)“You shall therefore lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and ^(B)you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. ¹⁹ You shall teach them to your children, talking of them when you are sitting in your house, and when you are walking by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. ^20 (C)You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, ^21 (D)that your days and the days of your children may be multiplied in the land that the Lord swore to your fathers to give them, ^(E)as long as the heavens are above the earth. ²² For if ^(F)you will be careful to do all this commandment that I command you to do, loving the Lord your God, walking in all his ways, and ^(G)holding fast to him, ²³ then the Lord ^(H)will drive out all these nations before you, and you will ^(I)dispossess nations greater and mightier than you. ^24 (J)Every place on which the sole of your foot treads shall be yours. Your territory shall be ^(K)from the wilderness to^[a] the Lebanon and from the River, the river Euphrates, to the western sea. ^25 (L)No one shall be able to stand against you. The Lord your God will lay ^(M)the fear of you and the dread of you on all the land that you shall tread, ^(N)as he promised you.

⁴⁴ Moses came and recited all the words of this song in the hearing of the people, he and ^(A)Joshua^[a] the son of Nun. ⁴⁵ And when Moses had finished speaking all these words to all Israel, ⁴⁶ he said to them, ^(B)“Take to heart all the words by which I am warning you today, ^(C)that you may command them to your children, that they may be careful to do all the words of this law. ⁴⁷ For it is no empty word for you, ^(D)but your very life, and by this word you shall live long in the land that you are going over the Jordan to possess.”
