The Golden Calf

32 When the people saw that Moses ^(A)delayed to come down from the mountain, the people gathered themselves together to Aaron and said to him, ^(B)“Up, make us gods who shall ^(C)go before us. As for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.” ²So Aaron said to them, “Take off the ^(D)rings of gold that are in the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring them to me.” ³So all the people took off the rings of gold that were in their ears and brought them to Aaron. ⁴^(E)And he received the gold from their hand and fashioned it with a graving tool and made a golden^[a] calf. And they said, ^(F)“These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!” ⁵When Aaron saw this, he built an altar before it. And Aaron ^(G)made a proclamation and said, “Tomorrow shall be a feast to the Lord.” ⁶And they rose up early the next day and offered burnt offerings and brought peace offerings. And ^(H)the people sat down to eat and drink and rose up ^(I)to play.

⁷And the Lord said to Moses, ^(J)“Go down, for your people, whom you brought up out of the land of Egypt, have ^(K)corrupted themselves. ⁸They have turned aside quickly out of the way that ^(L)I commanded them. They have made for themselves a golden calf and have worshiped it and sacrificed to it and said, ‘These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!’” ⁹And the Lord said to Moses, “I have seen this people, and behold, ^(M)it is a stiff-necked people. ¹⁰Now therefore ^(N)let me alone, that ^(O)my wrath may burn hot against them and ^(P)I may consume them, in order that ^(Q)I may make a great nation of you.”

¹¹But ^(R)Moses implored the Lord his God and said, “O Lord, why does your wrath burn hot against your people, whom you have brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand?

⁷Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go down, because your people, whom you brought up out of Egypt,^(M) have become corrupt.^(N) ⁸They have been quick to turn away^(O) from what I commanded them and have made themselves an idol^(P) cast in the shape of a calf.^(Q) They have bowed down to it and sacrificed^(R) to it and have said, ‘These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.’^(S)

⁹“I have seen these people,” the Lord said to Moses, “and they are a stiff-necked^(T) people. ¹⁰Now leave me alone^(U) so that my anger may burn against them and that I may destroy^(V) them. Then I will make you into a great nation.”^(W)

¹¹But Moses sought the favor^(X) of the Lord his God. “Lord,” he said, “why should your anger burn against your people, whom you brought out of Egypt with great power and a mighty hand?^(Y)

⁵“Moreover, you also know what Joab the son of Zeruiah ^(I)did to me, how he dealt with the two commanders of the armies of Israel, ^(J)Abner the son of Ner, ^(K)and Amasa the son of Jether, whom he killed, avenging^[b] in time of peace for blood that had been shed in war, and putting the blood of war^[c] on the belt around his^[d] waist and on the sandals on his feet. ⁶Act therefore ^(L)according to your wisdom, but do not let his gray head go down to Sheol in peace. ⁷But deal loyally with the sons of ^(M)Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be ^(N)among those who eat at your table, ^(O)for with such loyalty^[e] they met me when I fled from Absalom your brother. ⁸And there is also with you ^(P)Shimei the son of Gera, the Benjaminite from Bahurim, who cursed me with a grievous curse on the day ^(Q)when I went to Mahanaim. ^(R)But when he came down to meet me at the Jordan, I swore to him by the Lord, saying, ‘I will not put you to death with the sword.’ ⁹Now therefore do not hold him guiltless, ^(S)for you are a wise man. 2 When the time drew near for David to die,^(B) he gave a charge to Solomon his son.

²“I am about to go the way of all the earth,”^(C) he said. “So be strong,^(D) act like a man, ³and observe^(E) what the Lord your God requires: Walk in obedience to him, and keep his decrees and commands, his laws and regulations, as written in the Law of Moses. Do this so that you may prosper^(F) in all you do and wherever you go ⁴and that the Lord may keep his promise^(G) to me: ‘If your descendants watch how they live, and if they walk faithfully^(H) before me with all their heart and soul, you will never fail to have a successor on the throne of Israel.’

Jeremiah Remains in Judah

40 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord ^(A)after Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had let him go from ^(B)Ramah, when he took him ^(C)bound in chains along with all the captives of Jerusalem and Judah who were being exiled to Babylon. ²The captain of the guard took Jeremiah and said to him, ^(D)“The Lord your God pronounced this disaster against this place. ³The Lord has brought it about, and has done as he said. ^(E)Because you sinned against the Lord and did not obey his voice, this thing has come upon you. ⁴Now, behold, I release you today from ^(F)the chains on your hands. ^(G)If it seems good to you to come with me to Babylon, come, and I will look after you well, ^(H)but if it seems wrong to you to come with me to Babylon, do not come. ^(I)See, the whole land is before you; go wherever you think it good and right to go. ⁵If you remain,^[a] then return to ^(J)Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, ^(K)whom the king of Babylon appointed governor of the cities of Judah, and dwell with him among the people. ⁷^(P)When all the captains of the forces in the open country and their men heard that ^(Q)the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam governor in the land and had committed to him men, women, and children, those of ^(R)the poorest of the land who had not been taken into exile to Babylon, ⁸they went to Gedaliah at ^(S)Mizpah—^(T)Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, ^(U)Johanan the son of Kareah, Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth, the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, ^(V)Jezaniah the son of the Maacathite, they and their men. ⁹Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, swore to them and their men, saying, “Do not be afraid to serve the Chaldeans. ¹³Now ^(AE)Johanan the son of Kareah and ^(AF)all the leaders of the forces in the open country came to Gedaliah at Mizpah ¹⁴and said to him, “Do you know that Baalis the king of ^(AG)the Ammonites has sent Ishmael the son of Nethaniah to take your life?” But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam would not believe them. ¹⁵Then Johanan the son of Kareah spoke secretly to Gedaliah at Mizpah, “Please let me go and strike down Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and no one will know it. Then the commander gave him provisions and a present^(Q) and let him go. ⁶So Jeremiah went to Gedaliah son of Ahikam at Mizpah^(R) and stayed with him among the people who were left behind in the land.

Gedaliah Assassinated^(S)

⁷When all the army officers and their men who were still in the open country heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam as governor^(T) over the land and had put him in charge of the men, women and children who were the poorest^(U) in the land and who had not been carried into exile to Babylon, ⁸they came to Gedaliah at Mizpah^(V)—Ishmael^(W) son of Nethaniah, Johanan^(X) and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, Seraiah son of Tanhumeth, the sons of Ephai the Netophathite,^(Y) and Jaazaniah^[b] the son of the Maakathite,^(Z) and their men. ⁹Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, took an oath to reassure them and their men. “Do not be afraid to serve^(AA) the Babylonians,^[c]^(AB)” he said. “Settle down in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it will go well with you.^(AC) ¹⁰I myself will stay at Mizpah^(AD) to represent you before the Babylonians who come to us, but you are to harvest the wine,^(AE) summer fruit and olive oil, and put them in your storage jars,^(AF) and live in the towns you have taken over.”^(AG)

¹¹When all the Jews in Moab,^(AH) Ammon, Edom^(AI) and all the other countries^(AJ) heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant in Judah and had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, as governor over them, ¹²they all came back to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah at Mizpah, from all the countries where they had been scattered.^(AK) And they harvested an abundance of wine and summer fruit.

Signs of the End of the Age

³And as he sat on ^(C)the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, ^(D)Peter and James and John and ^(E)Andrew asked him ^(F)privately, ⁴“Tell us, ^(G)when will these things be, and what will be the sign when all these things are about to be accomplished?” ⁵And Jesus began to say to them, ^(H)“See that no one leads you astray. ⁶^(I)Many will come in my name, saying, ^(J)‘I am he!’ and they will lead many astray. ⁷And when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, ^(K)do not be alarmed. This ^(L)must take place, but the end is not yet. ⁸For ^(M)nation will rise against nation, and ^(N)kingdom against kingdom. There will be ^(O)earthquakes in various places; there will be ^(P)famines. These are but the beginning of the birth pains.

⁹^(Q)“But ^(R)be on your guard. ⁵Jesus said to them: “Watch out that no one deceives you.^(E) ⁶Many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and will deceive many. ⁷When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. ⁸Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains.

⁹“You must be on your guard. You will be handed over to the local councils and flogged in the synagogues.^(F) On account of me you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them. ¹⁰And the gospel must first be preached to all nations. ¹¹Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.^(G)

¹²“Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death.^(H) ¹³Everyone will hate you because of me,^(I) but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.^(J)

²⁵^(A)Lest you be wise in your own sight, I do not want you to be unaware of this mystery, brothers:^[a] ^(B)a partial hardening has come upon Israel, ^(C)until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. ²⁶And in this way all Israel will be saved, as it is written,

^(D)“The Deliverer will come ^(E)from Zion,
he will banish ungodliness from Jacob”;
²⁷“and this will be my ^(F)covenant with them
^(G)when I take away their sins.”

²⁸As regards the gospel, they are enemies for your sake. But as regards election, they are ^(H)beloved for the sake of their forefathers. ²⁹For the gifts and ^(I)the calling of God are irrevocable. ³⁰For just as ^(J)you were at one time disobedient to God but now have received mercy because of their disobedience, ³¹so they too have now been disobedient in order that by the mercy shown to you they also may now^[b] receive mercy. ³²For God ^(K)has consigned all to disobedience, that he may have mercy on all.

³³Oh, the depth of the riches and ^(L)wisdom and knowledge of God! ^(M)How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!

³⁴“For ^(N)who has known the mind of the Lord,
or ^(O)who has been his counselor?”
³⁵“Or ^(P)who has given a gift to him
that he might be repaid?”

All Israel Will Be Saved

²⁵I do not want you to be ignorant^(A) of this mystery,^(B) brothers and sisters, so that you may not be conceited:^(C) Israel has experienced a hardening^(D) in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in,^(E) ²⁶and in this way^[a] all Israel will be saved.^(F) As it is written:

“The deliverer will come from Zion;
he will turn godlessness away from Jacob.
²⁷And this is^[b] my covenant with them
when I take away their sins.”^[c]^(G)

²⁸As far as the gospel is concerned, they are enemies^(H) for your sake; but as far as election is concerned, they are loved on account of the patriarchs,^(I) ²⁹for God’s gifts and his call^(J) are irrevocable.^(K) ³⁰Just as you who were at one time disobedient^(L) to God have now received mercy as a result of their disobedience, ³¹so they too have now become disobedient in order that they too may now^[d] receive mercy as a result of God’s mercy to you. ³²For God has bound everyone over to disobedience^(M) so that he may have mercy on them all.

³³Oh, the depth of the riches^(N) of the wisdom and^[e] knowledge of God!^(O)
    How unsearchable his judgments,
    and his paths beyond tracing out!^(P)
³⁴“Who has known the mind of the Lord?

³⁵“Who has ever given to God,
