Israel Increases Greatly in Egypt

(A)These are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt with Jacob, each with his household: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin, Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. All the descendants of Jacob were (B)seventy persons; Joseph was already in Egypt. Then (C)Joseph died, and all his brothers and all that generation. (D)But the people of Israel were fruitful and increased greatly; they multiplied and grew exceedingly strong, so that the land was filled with them.

Pharaoh Oppresses Israel

Now there arose a new king over Egypt, (E)who did not know Joseph. And he said to his people, “Behold, (F)the people of Israel are too many and too mighty for us. 10 (G)Come, (H)let us deal shrewdly with them, lest they multiply, and, if war breaks out, they join our enemies and fight against us and escape from the land.” 11 Therefore they set taskmasters over them (I)to afflict them with heavy (J)burdens. They built for Pharaoh (K)store cities, Pithom and (L)Raamses. 12 But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and the more they spread abroad. And the Egyptians were in dread of the people of Israel. 13 So they ruthlessly made the people of Israel (M)work as slaves 14 and (N)made their lives bitter with hard service, in mortar and brick, and in all kinds of work in the field. In all their work they ruthlessly made them work as slaves.

15 Then the king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shiphrah and the other Puah, 16 “When you serve as midwife to the Hebrew women and see them on the birthstool, if it is a son, you shall kill him, but if it is a daughter, she shall live.” 17 But the midwives (O)feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but let the male children live. 18 So the king of Egypt called the midwives and said to them, “Why have you done this, and let the male children live?” 19 The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women, for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife comes to them.” 20 (P)So God dealt well with the midwives. And the people multiplied and grew very strong. 21 And because the midwives feared God, (Q)he gave them families. 22 Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, (R)“Every son that is born to the Hebrews[a] you shall cast into (S)the Nile, but you shall let every daughter live.”

The Israelites Oppressed

These are the names of the sons of Israel(A) who went to Egypt with Jacob, each with his family: Reuben, Simeon, Levi and Judah; Issachar, Zebulun and Benjamin; Dan and Naphtali; Gad and Asher.(B) The descendants of Jacob numbered seventy[a] in all;(C) Joseph was already in Egypt.

Now Joseph and all his brothers and all that generation died,(D) but the Israelites were exceedingly fruitful; they multiplied greatly, increased in numbers(E) and became so numerous that the land was filled with them.

Then a new king, to whom Joseph meant nothing, came to power in Egypt.(F) “Look,” he said to his people, “the Israelites have become far too numerous(G) for us.(H) 10 Come, we must deal shrewdly(I) with them or they will become even more numerous and, if war breaks out, will join our enemies, fight against us and leave the country.”(J)

11 So they put slave masters(K) over them to oppress them with forced labor,(L) and they built Pithom and Rameses(M) as store cities(N) for Pharaoh. 12 But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and spread; so the Egyptians came to dread the Israelites 13 and worked them ruthlessly.(O) 14 They made their lives bitter with harsh labor(P) in brick(Q) and mortar and with all kinds of work in the fields; in all their harsh labor the Egyptians worked them ruthlessly.(R)

15 The king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives,(S) whose names were Shiphrah and Puah, 16 “When you are helping the Hebrew women during childbirth on the delivery stool, if you see that the baby is a boy, kill him; but if it is a girl, let her live.”(T) 17 The midwives, however, feared(U) God and did not do what the king of Egypt had told them to do;(V) they let the boys live. 18 Then the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and asked them, “Why have you done this? Why have you let the boys live?”

19 The midwives answered Pharaoh, “Hebrew women are not like Egyptian women; they are vigorous and give birth before the midwives arrive.”(W)

20 So God was kind to the midwives(X) and the people increased and became even more numerous. 21 And because the midwives feared(Y) God, he gave them families(Z) of their own.

22 Then Pharaoh gave this order to all his people: “Every Hebrew boy that is born you must throw into the Nile,(AA) but let every girl live.”(AB)

David Marries Michal

17 Then Saul said to David, “Here is (A)my elder daughter Merab. (B)I will give her to you for a wife. Only be valiant for me (C)and fight the Lord's battles.” For Saul thought, “Let not my hand be against him, (D)but let the hand of the Philistines be against him.” 18 And David said to Saul, (E)“Who am I, and who are my relatives, my father's clan in Israel, that I should be son-in-law to the king?” 19 But at the time when Merab, Saul's daughter, should have been given to David, she was given to (F)Adriel the (G)Meholathite for a wife.

20 Now (H)Saul's daughter Michal (I)loved David. And they told Saul, and the thing pleased him. 21 Saul thought, “Let me give her to him, that she may (J)be a snare for him (K)and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him.” Therefore Saul said to David a second time,[a] (L)“You shall now be my son-in-law.” 22 And Saul commanded his servants, “Speak to David in private and say, ‘Behold, the king has delight in you, and all his servants love you. Now then become the king's son-in-law.’” 23 And Saul's servants spoke those words in the ears of David. And David said, (M)“Does it seem to you a little thing to become the king's son-in-law, since I am a poor man and have no reputation?” 24 And the servants of Saul told him, “Thus and so did David speak.” 25 Then Saul said, “Thus shall you say to David, ‘The king desires no (N)bride-price except a hundred foreskins of the Philistines, (O)that he may be avenged of the king's enemies.’” (P)Now Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines. 26 And when his servants told David these words, it pleased David well to be the king's son-in-law. (Q)Before the time had expired, 27 David arose and went, (R)along with his men, and killed two hundred of the Philistines. (S)And David brought their foreskins, which were given in full number to the king, that he might become the king's son-in-law. And Saul gave him his daughter Michal for a wife. 28 But when Saul saw and knew that (T)the Lord was with David, (U)and that Michal, Saul's daughter, loved him, 29 Saul was even more afraid of David. So Saul was David's enemy continually.

30 (V)Then the commanders of the Philistines came out to battle, and as often as they came out (W)David had more success than all the servants of Saul, so that his name was highly esteemed.

17 Saul said to David, “Here is my older daughter(A) Merab. I will give her to you in marriage;(B) only serve me bravely and fight the battles(C) of the Lord.” For Saul said to himself,(D) “I will not raise a hand against him. Let the Philistines do that!”

18 But David said to Saul, “Who am I,(E) and what is my family or my clan in Israel, that I should become the king’s son-in-law?(F) 19 So[a] when the time came for Merab,(G) Saul’s daughter, to be given to David, she was given in marriage to Adriel of Meholah.(H)

20 Now Saul’s daughter Michal(I) was in love with David, and when they told Saul about it, he was pleased.(J) 21 “I will give her to him,” he thought, “so that she may be a snare(K) to him and so that the hand of the Philistines may be against him.” So Saul said to David, “Now you have a second opportunity to become my son-in-law.”

22 Then Saul ordered his attendants: “Speak to David privately and say, ‘Look, the king likes you, and his attendants all love you; now become his son-in-law.’”

23 They repeated these words to David. But David said, “Do you think it is a small matter to become the king’s son-in-law?(L) I’m only a poor man and little known.”

24 When Saul’s servants told him what David had said, 25 Saul replied, “Say to David, ‘The king wants no other price(M) for the bride than a hundred Philistine foreskins, to take revenge(N) on his enemies.’” Saul’s plan(O) was to have David fall by the hands of the Philistines.

26 When the attendants told David these things, he was pleased to become the king’s son-in-law. So before the allotted time elapsed, 27 David took his men with him and went out and killed two hundred Philistines and brought back their foreskins. They counted out the full number to the king so that David might become the king’s son-in-law. Then Saul gave him his daughter Michal(P) in marriage.

28 When Saul realized that the Lord was with David and that his daughter Michal(Q) loved David, 29 Saul became still more afraid(R) of him, and he remained his enemy the rest of his days.

30 The Philistine commanders continued to go out to battle, and as often as they did, David met with more success(S) than the rest of Saul’s officers, and his name became well known.

11 Therefore I am full of the wrath of the Lord;
    (A)I am weary of holding it in.
(B)“Pour it out upon the children in the street,
    and upon the gatherings of young men, also;
(C)both husband and wife (D)shall be taken,
    the elderly and the very aged.
12 (E)Their houses shall be turned over to others,
    their fields and wives together,
for I will stretch out my hand
    against the inhabitants of the land,”
declares the Lord.
13 (F)“For from the least to the greatest of them,
    everyone (G)is greedy for unjust gain;
and from (H)prophet to priest,
    everyone deals falsely.
14 They have healed the wound of my people lightly,
    saying, (I)‘Peace, peace,’
    (J)when there is no peace.
15 (K)Were they ashamed when they committed abomination?
    No, they were not at all ashamed;
    they did not know how to blush.
Therefore they shall fall among those who fall;
    (L)at the time that I punish them, they shall be overthrown,”
says the Lord.

16 Thus says the Lord:
“Stand by the roads, and look,
    and ask for (M)the ancient paths,
where the good way is; and walk in it,
    (N)and find rest for your souls.
But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’
17 (O)I set watchmen over you, saying,
    ‘Pay attention to (P)the sound of the trumpet!’
But they said, (Q)‘We will not pay attention.’
18 Therefore hear, O nations,
    and know, O congregation, what will happen to them.
19 Hear, O earth; behold, I am bringing disaster upon this people,
    (R)the fruit of their devices,
because they have not paid attention to my words;
    and as for my law, they have rejected it.
20 (S)What use to me is (T)frankincense that comes from (U)Sheba,
    or sweet cane from a distant land?
(V)Your burnt offerings are not acceptable,
    nor your sacrifices pleasing to me.
21 Therefore thus says the Lord:
(W)‘Behold, I will lay before this people
    stumbling blocks against which they shall stumble;
fathers and sons together,
    neighbor and friend shall perish.’”

22 Thus says the Lord:
(X)“Behold, a people is coming (Y)from the north country,
    a great nation is stirring from (Z)the farthest parts of the earth.
23 They lay hold on bow and javelin;
    they are (AA)cruel and have no mercy;
    (AB)the sound of them is like the roaring sea;
they ride on horses,
    set in array as a man for battle,
    against you, O daughter of Zion!”
24 We have heard the report of it;
    (AC)our hands fall helpless;
anguish has taken hold of us,
    (AD)pain as of a woman in labor.
25 Go not out into the field,
    nor walk on the road,
for the enemy has a sword;
    (AE)terror is on every side.
26 O daughter of my people, (AF)put on sackcloth,
    and (AG)roll in ashes;
(AH)make mourning as for an only son,
    most bitter lamentation,
for suddenly the destroyer
    will come upon us.

27 “I have made you (AI)a tester of metals among my people,
    that you may know and (AJ)test their ways.
28 (AK)They are all stubbornly rebellious,
    (AL)going about with slanders;
they are (AM)bronze and iron;
    all of them act corruptly.
29 The (AN)bellows blow fiercely;

(AO)in vain the refining goes on,

11 But I am full of the wrath(A) of the Lord,

declares the Lord.
13 “From the least to the greatest,

14 They dress the wound of my people

15 Are they ashamed of their detestable conduct?
    No, they have no shame at all;
    they do not even know how to blush.(L)
So they will fall among the fallen;
    they will be brought down when I punish(M) them,”
says the Lord.

16 This is what the Lord says:

“Stand at the crossroads and look;
    ask for the ancient paths,(N)
ask where the good way(O) is, and walk in it,
    and you will find rest(P) for your souls.
    But you said, ‘We will not walk in it.’
17 I appointed watchmen(Q) over you and said,
    ‘Listen to the sound of the trumpet!’(R)
    But you said, ‘We will not listen.’(S)
18 Therefore hear, you nations;
    you who are witnesses,
    observe what will happen to them.
19 Hear, you earth:(T)
    I am bringing disaster(U) on this people,
    the fruit of their schemes,(V)
because they have not listened to my words(W)
    and have rejected my law.(X)
20 What do I care about incense from Sheba(Y)
    or sweet calamus(Z) from a distant land?
Your burnt offerings are not acceptable;(AA)
    your sacrifices(AB) do not please me.”(AC)

21 Therefore this is what the Lord says:

“I will put obstacles before this people.
    Parents and children alike will stumble(AD) over them;
    neighbors and friends will perish.”

22 This is what the Lord says:

“Look, an army is coming

23 They are armed with bow and spear;
    they are cruel and show no mercy.(AG)

they come like men in battle formation

They are bronze and iron;(AW)
    they all act corruptly.
29 The bellows blow fiercely

Judas Hangs Himself

Then when (A)Judas, his betrayer, saw that Jesus[a] was condemned, (B)he changed his mind and brought back (C)the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders, saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” They said, “What is that to us? (D)See to it yourself.” And throwing down the pieces of silver into the temple, (E)he departed, and he went and hanged himself. But the chief priests, taking the pieces of silver, said, “It is not lawful to put them into (F)the treasury, since it is blood money.” So they took counsel and bought with them the potter's field as a burial place for strangers. Therefore (G)that field has been called the Field of Blood (H)to this day. (I)Then was fulfilled what had been spoken by the prophet Jeremiah, saying, (J)“And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him on whom a price had been set by some of the sons of Israel, 10 and they gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord directed me.”

When Judas, who had betrayed him,(A) saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver(B) to the chief priests and the elders. “I have sinned,” he said, “for I have betrayed innocent blood.”

“What is that to us?” they replied. “That’s your responsibility.”(C)

So Judas threw the money into the temple(D) and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.(E)

The chief priests picked up the coins and said, “It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.” So they decided to use the money to buy the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners. That is why it has been called the Field of Blood(F) to this day. Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled:(G) “They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price set on him by the people of Israel, 10 and they used them to buy the potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.”[a](H)

Patience in Suffering

Be patient, therefore, brothers,[a] until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives (A)the early and the late rains. You also, be patient. (B)Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord (C)is at hand. Do not grumble against one another, brothers, (D)so that you may not be judged; behold, (E)the Judge is standing (F)at the door. 10 As an example of suffering and patience, brothers, take (G)the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11 Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfast. You have heard of (H)the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen (I)the purpose of the Lord, how (J)the Lord is compassionate and merciful.

12 But above all, my brothers, (K)do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your “yes” be yes and your “no” be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation.

The Prayer of Faith

13 Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him (L)sing praise. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, (M)anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And (N)if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 16 Therefore, (O)confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, (P)that you may be healed. (Q)The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.[b] 17 Elijah was a man (R)with a nature like ours, and (S)he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for (T)three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. 18 (U)Then he prayed again, and heaven gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit.

19 My brothers, (V)if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone (W)brings him back, 20 let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering (X)will save his soul from death and (Y)will cover a multitude of sins.
