7 También en días de Artajerjes escribieron Bislam, Mitrídates, Tabeel y los demás compañeros suyos, a Artajerjes rey de Persia; y la escritura y el lenguaje de la carta eran en arameo. 8 Rehum canciller y Simsai secretario escribieron una carta contra Jerusalén al rey Artajerjes. 9 En tal fecha escribieron Rehum canciller y Simsai secretario, y los demás compañeros suyos los jueces, gobernadores y oficiales, y los de Persia, de Erec, de Babilonia, de Susa, esto es, los elamitas, 10 y los demás pueblos que el grande y glorioso Asnapar transportó e hizo habitar en las ciudades de Samaria y las demás provincias del otro lado del río. 11 Y esta es la copia de la carta que enviaron: Al rey Artajerjes: Tus siervos del otro lado del río te saludan. 12 Sea notorio al rey, que los judíos que subieron de ti a nosotros vinieron a Jerusalén; y edifican la ciudad rebelde y mala, y levantan los muros y reparan los fundamentos. 13 Ahora sea notorio al rey, que si aquella ciudad fuere reedificada, y los muros fueren levantados, no pagarán tributo, impuesto y rentas, y el erario de los reyes será menoscabado. 14 Siendo que nos mantienen del palacio, no nos es justo ver el menosprecio del rey, por lo cual hemos enviado a hacerlo saber al rey, 15 para que se busque en el libro de las memorias de tus padres. Hallarás en el libro de las memorias, y sabrás que esta ciudad es ciudad rebelde, y perjudicial a los reyes y a las provincias, y que de tiempo antiguo forman en medio de ella rebeliones, por lo que esta ciudad fue destruida. 16 Hacemos saber al rey que si esta ciudad fuere reedificada, y levantados sus muros, la región de más allá del río no será tuya.

17 El rey envió esta respuesta: A Rehum canciller, a Simsai secretario, a los demás compañeros suyos que habitan en Samaria, y a los demás del otro lado del río: Salud y paz. 18 La carta que nos enviasteis fue leída claramente delante de mí. 19 Y por mí fue dada orden y buscaron; y hallaron que aquella ciudad de tiempo antiguo se levanta contra los reyes y se rebela, y se forma en ella sedición; 20 y que hubo en Jerusalén reyes fuertes que dominaron en todo lo que hay más allá del río, y que se les pagaba tributo, impuesto y rentas. 21 Ahora, pues, dad orden que cesen aquellos hombres, y no sea esa ciudad reedificada hasta que por mí sea dada nueva orden. 22 Y mirad que no seáis negligentes en esto; ¿por qué habrá de crecer el daño en perjuicio de los reyes?

23 Entonces, cuando la copia de la carta del rey Artajerjes fue leída delante de Rehum, y de Simsai secretario y sus compañeros, fueron apresuradamente a Jerusalén a los judíos, y les hicieron cesar con poder y violencia.

7 And in the days of [a]Artaxerxes, Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of his colleagues wrote to Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the [b]text of the letter was written in Aramaic and translated (A)from Aramaic.

The Letter to King Artaxerxes

8 [c]Rehum the commander and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to King Artaxerxes, as follows— 9 [d]Rehum the commander, Shimshai the scribe, and (B)the rest of their colleagues, the judges and (C)the lesser governors, the officials, the secretaries, the men of Erech, the Babylonians, the men of Susa, that is, the Elamites, 10 and the rest of the nations which the great and honorable [e]Osnappar deported and settled in the city of Samaria, and in the rest of the region beyond the Euphrates River. (D)And now 11 this is a copy of the letter which they sent to him:

“To King Artaxerxes: Your servants, the men of the region beyond the Euphrates River; and now 12 let it be known to the king that the Jews who came up from you have come to us at Jerusalem; they are rebuilding (E)the rebellious and evil city and (F)are finishing the walls and repairing the foundations. 13 Now let it be known to the king, that if that city is rebuilt and the walls are finished, (G)they will not pay tribute, custom tax, or toll, and it will [f]be detrimental to the revenue of the kings. 14 Now because we [g]are in the service of the palace, and it is not fitting for us to see the king’s shame, for this reason we have sent word and informed the king, 15 so that a search may be conducted in the record books of your fathers. And you will discover in the record books and learn that that city is a rebellious city and detrimental to kings and provinces, and that they have revolted within it in past days; for this reason that city was laid waste. 16 We are informing the king that if that city is rebuilt and the walls finished, then as a result of this you will have no possession in the province beyond the Euphrates River.”

The King Replies and Work Stops

17 Then the king sent a response to Rehum the commander, Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their colleagues who live in Samaria and in the rest of the provinces beyond the Euphrates River: “Peace. And now, 18 the document which you sent to us has been [h](H)translated and read before me. 19 And a decree has been [i]issued by me, and a search has been conducted and it has been discovered that that city has risen up against the kings in past days, and that rebellion and revolt have been perpetrated in it, 20 (I)that mighty kings have [j]ruled over Jerusalem, governing all the provinces (J)beyond the Euphrates River, and that (K)tribute, custom tax, and toll were paid to them. 21 Now issue a decree to make those men stop work, so that this city will not be rebuilt until a decree is issued by me. 22 And beware of being negligent in carrying out this matter; why should there be great damage, to the detriment of the kings?”

23 Then as soon as the copy of King Artaxerxes’ decree was read before Rehum and Shimshai the scribe and their colleagues, they went in a hurry to Jerusalem to the Jews and stopped them by military force.

Esdras y sus compañeros llegan a Jerusalén

7 Pasadas estas cosas, en el reinado de Artajerjes rey de Persia, Esdras hijo de Seraías, hijo de Azarías, hijo de Hilcías, 2 hijo de Salum, hijo de Sadoc, hijo de Ahitob, 3 hijo de Amarías, hijo de Azarías, hijo de Meraiot, 4 hijo de Zeraías, hijo de Uzi, hijo de Buqui, 5 hijo de Abisúa, hijo de Finees, hijo de Eleazar, hijo de Aarón, primer sacerdote, 6 este Esdras subió de Babilonia. Era escriba diligente en la ley de Moisés, que Jehová Dios de Israel había dado; y le concedió el rey todo lo que pidió, porque la mano de Jehová su Dios estaba sobre Esdras.

7 Y con él subieron a Jerusalén algunos de los hijos de Israel, y de los sacerdotes, levitas, cantores, porteros y sirvientes del templo, en el séptimo año del rey Artajerjes. 8 Y llegó a Jerusalén en el mes quinto del año séptimo del rey. 9 Porque el día primero del primer mes fue el principio de la partida de Babilonia, y al primero del mes quinto llegó a Jerusalén, estando con él la buena mano de Dios. 10 Porque Esdras había preparado su corazón para inquirir la ley de Jehová y para cumplirla, y para enseñar en Israel sus estatutos y decretos.

11 Esta es la copia de la carta que dio el rey Artajerjes al sacerdote Esdras, escriba versado en los mandamientos de Jehová y en sus estatutos a Israel: 12 Artajerjes rey de reyes, a Esdras, sacerdote y escriba erudito en la ley del Dios del cielo: Paz. 13 Por mí es dada orden que todo aquel en mi reino, del pueblo de Israel y de sus sacerdotes y levitas, que quiera ir contigo a Jerusalén, vaya. 14 Porque de parte del rey y de sus siete consejeros eres enviado a visitar a Judea y a Jerusalén, conforme a la ley de tu Dios que está en tu mano; 15 y a llevar la plata y el oro que el rey y sus consejeros voluntariamente ofrecen al Dios de Israel, cuya morada está en Jerusalén, 16 y toda la plata y el oro que halles en toda la provincia de Babilonia, con las ofrendas voluntarias del pueblo y de los sacerdotes, que voluntariamente ofrecieren para la casa de su Dios, la cual está en Jerusalén. 17 Comprarás, pues, diligentemente con este dinero becerros, carneros y corderos, con sus ofrendas y sus libaciones, y los ofrecerás sobre el altar de la casa de vuestro Dios, la cual está en Jerusalén. 18 Y lo que a ti y a tus hermanos os parezca hacer de la otra plata y oro, hacedlo conforme a la voluntad de vuestro Dios. 19 Los utensilios que te son entregados para el servicio de la casa de tu Dios, los restituirás delante de Dios en Jerusalén. 20 Y todo lo que se requiere para la casa de tu Dios, que te sea necesario dar, lo darás de la casa de los tesoros del rey.

21 Y por mí, Artajerjes rey, es dada orden a todos los tesoreros que están al otro lado del río, que todo lo que os pida el sacerdote Esdras, escriba de la ley del Dios del cielo, se le conceda prontamente, 22 hasta cien talentos de plata, cien coros de trigo, cien batos de vino, y cien batos de aceite; y sal sin medida. 23 Todo lo que es mandado por el Dios del cielo, sea hecho prontamente para la casa del Dios del cielo; pues, ¿por qué habría de ser su ira contra el reino del rey y de sus hijos? 24 Y a vosotros os hacemos saber que a todos los sacerdotes y levitas, cantores, porteros, sirvientes del templo y ministros de la casa de Dios, ninguno podrá imponerles tributo, contribución ni renta.

25 Y tú, Esdras, conforme a la sabiduría que tienes de tu Dios, pon jueces y gobernadores que gobiernen a todo el pueblo que está al otro lado del río, a todos los que conocen las leyes de tu Dios; y al que no las conoce, le enseñarás. 26 Y cualquiera que no cumpliere la ley de tu Dios, y la ley del rey, sea juzgado prontamente, sea a muerte, a destierro, a pena de multa, o prisión.

27 Bendito Jehová Dios de nuestros padres, que puso tal cosa en el corazón del rey, para honrar la casa de Jehová que está en Jerusalén, 28 e inclinó hacia mí su misericordia delante del rey y de sus consejeros, y de todos los príncipes poderosos del rey. Y yo, fortalecido por la mano de mi Dios sobre mí, reuní a los principales de Israel para que subiesen conmigo.

8 Estos son los jefes de casas paternas, y la genealogía de aquellos que subieron conmigo de Babilonia, reinando el rey Artajerjes: 2 De los hijos de Finees, Gersón; de los hijos de Itamar, Daniel; de los hijos de David, Hatús. 3 De los hijos de Secanías y de los hijos de Paros, Zacarías, y con él, en la línea de varones, ciento cincuenta. 4 De los hijos de Pahat-moab, Elioenai hijo de Zeraías, y con él doscientos varones. 5 De los hijos de Secanías, el hijo de Jahaziel, y con él trescientos varones. 6 De los hijos de Adín, Ebed hijo de Jonatán, y con él cincuenta varones. 7 De los hijos de Elam, Jesaías hijo de Atalías, y con él setenta varones. 8 De los hijos de Sefatías, Zebadías hijo de Micael, y con él ochenta varones. 9 De los hijos de Joab, Obadías hijo de Jehiel, y con él doscientos dieciocho varones. 10 De los hijos de Selomit, el hijo de Josifías, y con él ciento sesenta varones. 11 De los hijos de Bebai, Zacarías hijo de Bebai, y con él veintiocho varones. 12 De los hijos de Azgad, Johanán hijo de Hacatán, y con él ciento diez varones. 13 De los hijos de Adonicam, los postreros, cuyos nombres son estos: Elifelet, Jeiel y Semaías, y con ellos sesenta varones. 14 Y de los hijos de Bigvai, Utai y Zabud, y con ellos setenta varones.

15 Los reuní junto al río que viene a Ahava, y acampamos allí tres días; y habiendo buscado entre el pueblo y entre los sacerdotes, no hallé allí de los hijos de Leví. 16 Entonces despaché a Eliezer, Ariel, Semaías, Elnatán, Jarib, Elnatán, Natán, Zacarías y Mesulam, hombres principales, asimismo a Joiarib y a Elnatán, hombres doctos; 17 y los envié a Iddo, jefe en el lugar llamado Casifia, y puse en boca de ellos las palabras que habían de hablar a Iddo, y a sus hermanos los sirvientes del templo en el lugar llamado Casifia, para que nos trajesen ministros para la casa de nuestro Dios. 18 Y nos trajeron según la buena mano de nuestro Dios sobre nosotros, un varón entendido, de los hijos de Mahli hijo de Leví, hijo de Israel; a Serebías con sus hijos y sus hermanos, dieciocho; 19 a Hasabías, y con él a Jesaías de los hijos de Merari, a sus hermanos y a sus hijos, veinte; 20 y de los sirvientes del templo, a quienes David con los príncipes puso para el ministerio de los levitas, doscientos veinte sirvientes del templo, todos los cuales fueron designados por sus nombres.

21 Y publiqué ayuno allí junto al río Ahava, para afligirnos delante de nuestro Dios, para solicitar de él camino derecho para nosotros, y para nuestros niños, y para todos nuestros bienes. 22 Porque tuve vergüenza de pedir al rey tropa y gente de a caballo que nos defendiesen del enemigo en el camino; porque habíamos hablado al rey, diciendo: La mano de nuestro Dios es para bien sobre todos los que le buscan; mas su poder y su furor contra todos los que le abandonan. 23 Ayunamos, pues, y pedimos a nuestro Dios sobre esto, y él nos fue propicio.

24 Aparté luego a doce de los principales de los sacerdotes, a Serebías y a Hasabías, y con ellos diez de sus hermanos; 25 y les pesé la plata, el oro y los utensilios, ofrenda que para la casa de nuestro Dios habían ofrecido el rey y sus consejeros y sus príncipes, y todo Israel allí presente. 26 Pesé, pues, en manos de ellos seiscientos cincuenta talentos de plata, y utensilios de plata por cien talentos, y cien talentos de oro; 27 además, veinte tazones de oro de mil dracmas, y dos vasos de bronce bruñido muy bueno, preciados como el oro. 28 Y les dije: Vosotros estáis consagrados a Jehová, y son santos los utensilios, y la plata y el oro, ofrenda voluntaria a Jehová Dios de nuestros padres. 29 Vigilad y guardadlos, hasta que los peséis delante de los príncipes de los sacerdotes y levitas, y de los jefes de las casas paternas de Israel en Jerusalén, en los aposentos de la casa de Jehová. 30 Los sacerdotes y los levitas recibieron el peso de la plata y del oro y de los utensilios, para traerlo a Jerusalén a la casa de nuestro Dios.

31 Y partimos del río Ahava el doce del mes primero, para ir a Jerusalén; y la mano de nuestro Dios estaba sobre nosotros, y nos libró de mano del enemigo y del acechador en el camino. 32 Y llegamos a Jerusalén, y reposamos allí tres días. 33 Al cuarto día fue luego pesada la plata, el oro y los utensilios, en la casa de nuestro Dios, por mano del sacerdote Meremot hijo de Urías, y con él Eleazar hijo de Finees; y con ellos Jozabad hijo de Jesúa y Noadías hijo de Binúi, levitas. 34 Por cuenta y por peso se entregó todo, y se apuntó todo aquel peso en aquel tiempo.

35 Los hijos de la cautividad, los que habían venido del cautiverio, ofrecieron holocaustos al Dios de Israel, doce becerros por todo Israel, noventa y seis carneros, setenta y siete corderos, y doce machos cabríos por expiación, todo en holocausto a Jehová. 36 Y entregaron los despachos del rey a sus sátrapas y capitanes del otro lado del río, los cuales ayudaron al pueblo y a la casa de Dios.

Ezra Journeys from Babylon to Jerusalem

7 (A)Now after these things, in the reign of (B)Artaxerxes king of Persia, Ezra went up to Jerusalem; Ezra was the son of Seraiah, son of Azariah, son of Hilkiah, 2 son of Shallum, son of Zadok, son of Ahitub, 3 son of Amariah, son of Azariah, son of Meraioth, 4 son of Zerahiah, son of Uzzi, son of Bukki, 5 son of Abishua, son of Phinehas, son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the chief priest. 6 So this Ezra went up from Babylon, and he was a (C)scribe skilled in the Law of Moses, which the Lord God of Israel had given; and the king granted him all [a]he requested (D)because the hand of the Lord his God was upon him. 7 (E)Some of the sons of Israel and some of the priests, the Levites, the singers, the gatekeepers, and the temple servants went up to Jerusalem in the seventh year of King Artaxerxes.

8 And he came to Jerusalem in the fifth month, which was in the seventh year of the king. 9 For on the first day of the first month he began to go up from Babylon; and on the first of the fifth month he came to Jerusalem, (F)because the good hand of his God was upon him. 10 For Ezra had [b]firmly resolved to study the Law of the Lord and to practice it, and (G)to teach His statutes and ordinances in Israel.

King’s Decree on Behalf of Ezra

11 Now this is the copy of the letter which King Artaxerxes gave to Ezra the priest, the scribe, [c]learned in the words of the commandments of the Lord and His statutes to Israel: 12 “[d]Artaxerxes, (H)king of kings, to Ezra the priest, the scribe of the Law of the God of heaven, [e]perfect peace. And now 13 (I)I have issued a decree that any of the people of Israel and their priests and the Levites in my kingdom who are willing to go to Jerusalem, may go with you. 14 Since you are sent [f]on the part of the king and his (J)seven advisers to inquire about Judah and Jerusalem according to the Law of your God which is in your hand, 15 and to bring the silver and gold, which the king and his advisers have voluntarily given to the God of Israel, (K)whose dwelling is in Jerusalem, 16 with (L)all the silver and gold which you find in the entire province of Babylon, along (M)with the [g]voluntary offering of the people and of the priests, who (N)offered willingly for the house of their God which is in Jerusalem; 17 with this money, therefore, you shall diligently buy bulls, rams, and lambs, (O)with their grain offerings and their drink offerings, and (P)offer them on the altar of the house of your God which is in Jerusalem. 18 And whatever seems good to you and your brothers to do with the rest of the silver and gold, you may do according to the will of your God. 19 Also the utensils which are given to you for the service of the house of your God, deliver in full before the God of Jerusalem. 20 And the rest of the needs of the house of your God, for which it may be incumbent upon you to provide, (Q)provide for them from the royal treasury.

21 “I myself, King Artaxerxes, issue a decree to all the treasurers who are in the provinces beyond the Euphrates River, that whatever Ezra the priest, (R)the scribe of the Law of the God of heaven, may require of you, it shall be done diligently, 22 up to [h]a hundred talents of silver, [i]a hundred kors of wheat, [j]a hundred baths of wine, [k]a hundred baths of anointing oil, and salt [l]as needed. 23 Whatever is [m]commanded by the God of heaven, it shall be done with zeal for the house of the God of heaven, (S)so that there will not be wrath against the kingdom of the king and his sons. 24 We also inform you that (T)it is not allowed to impose tax, tribute, or toll (U)on any of the priests, Levites, singers, doorkeepers, temple servants, or other servants of this house of God.

25 “And you, Ezra, according to the wisdom of your God which is in your hand, (V)appoint magistrates and judges so that they may judge all the people who are in the province beyond the Euphrates River, that is, all those who know the laws of your God; and you may (W)teach anyone who is ignorant of them. 26 And (X)whoever does not comply with the Law of your God and the law of the king, judgment is to be executed upon him strictly, whether for death or for banishment, or for [n]confiscation of property or for imprisonment.”

The King’s Kindness

27 Blessed be the Lord, the God of our fathers, (Y)who has put such a thing as this in the king’s heart, to glorify the house of the Lord which is in Jerusalem, 28 and (Z)has extended favor to me before the king and his counselors and before all the king’s mighty officials. So I was strengthened according to (AA)the hand of the Lord my God that was upon me, and I gathered [o]leading men from Israel to go up with me.

People Who Went with Ezra

8 Now these are the heads of their fathers’ households and the genealogical enrollment of those who went up with me from Babylon in the reign of King Artaxerxes: 2 of the sons of Phinehas, Gershom; of the sons of Ithamar, Daniel; of the sons of David, (AB)Hattush; 3 of the sons of Shecaniah who was of the sons of (AC)Parosh, Zechariah, and with him 150 males who were in the genealogical list; 4 of the sons of Pahath-moab, Eliehoenai the son of Zerahiah and two hundred males with him; 5 of the sons of [p]Zattu, Shecaniah, the son of Jahaziel and three hundred males with him; 6 and of the sons of (AD)Adin, Ebed the son of Jonathan and fifty males with him; 7 and of the sons of Elam, Jeshaiah the son of Athaliah and seventy males with him; 8 and of the sons of Shephatiah, Zebadiah the son of Michael and eighty males with him; 9 of the sons of Joab, Obadiah the son of Jehiel and 218 males with him; 10 and of the sons of [q]Bani, Shelomith, the son of Josiphiah and 160 males with him; 11 and of the sons of Bebai, Zechariah the son of Bebai and twenty-eight males with him; 12 and of the sons of Azgad, Johanan the son of Hakkatan and 110 males with him; 13 and of the sons of Adonikam, the last ones, these being their names: Eliphelet, [r]Jeiel, and Shemaiah, and sixty males with them; 14 and of the sons of Bigvai, Uthai and [s]Zabbud, and seventy males with [t]them.

Ezra Sends for Levites

15 Now I assembled them at (AE)the river that runs to Ahava, where we camped for three days; and when I paid close attention to the people and the priests, I (AF)did not find any Levites there. 16 So I sent for Eliezer, Ariel, Shemaiah, Elnathan, Jarib, Elnathan, Nathan, Zechariah, and Meshullam, [u]leading men, and for Joiarib and Elnathan, teachers. 17 And I sent them to Iddo the [v]leading man at the place called Casiphia; and I [w]told them what to say to [x]Iddo and his brothers, (AG)the temple servants at the place Casiphia, that is, to bring ministers to us for the house of our God. 18 (AH)And as the good hand of our God was upon us, they brought us a (AI)man of insight from the sons of Mahli, the son of Levi, the son of Israel, namely Sherebiah, and his sons and brothers, eighteen men; 19 and Hashabiah and [y]Jeshaiah of the sons of Merari, with his brothers and their sons, twenty men; 20 and 220 of (AJ)the temple servants, whom David and the officials had provided for the service of the Levites, all of them designated by name.

Protection of God Invoked

21 Then I proclaimed (AK)a fast there at (AL)the river of Ahava, to (AM)humble ourselves before our God, to seek from Him a [z]safe journey for us, our little ones, and all our possessions. 22 For I was ashamed to request from the king troops and horsemen to [aa]protect us from the enemy on the way, because we had said to the king, “(AN)The hand of our God is [ab]favorably disposed to all who seek Him, but (AO)His power and His anger are against all those who (AP)abandon Him.” 23 So we fasted and sought our God concerning this matter, and He [ac](AQ)listened to our pleading.

24 Then I selected twelve of the leading priests: (AR)Sherebiah, Hashabiah, and with them ten of their brothers; 25 and I (AS)weighed out to them (AT)the silver, the gold, and the utensils, the offering for the house of our God which the king, (AU)his counselors, his officials, and all Israel who were present there had contributed. 26 (AV)So I weighed into their hands [ad]650 talents of silver, and silver utensils worth [ae]a hundred talents, and a hundred gold talents, 27 and twenty gold bowls worth a thousand [af]darics, and two utensils of fine shiny bronze, precious as gold. 28 Then I said to them, “(AW)You are holy to the Lord, and the (AX)utensils are holy; and the silver and the gold are a [ag]voluntary offering to the Lord God of your fathers. 29 Watch and keep them (AY)until you weigh them before the leading priests, the Levites, and the leaders of the fathers’ households of Israel in Jerusalem, in the chambers of the house of the Lord.” 30 So the priests and the Levites (AZ)accepted the weight of silver and gold and the utensils, to bring them to Jerusalem to the house of our God.

31 Then we journeyed from (BA)the river Ahava on (BB)the twelfth of the first month to go to Jerusalem; and (BC)the hand of our God was upon us, and He rescued us from the hand of the enemy and the ambushes by the road. 32 (BD)So we came to Jerusalem and remained there for three days.

Treasure Placed in the Temple

33 And on the fourth day the silver, the gold, and the utensils (BE)were weighed out in the house of our God into the hand of (BF)Meremoth the son of Uriah the priest, and with him was Eleazar the son of Phinehas; and with them were the Levites, Jozabad the son of Jeshua and Noadiah the son of Binnui. 34 A notation was made for everything by number and weight, and all the weight was recorded at that time.

35 (BG)The exiles who had come from the captivity offered burnt offerings to the God of Israel: (BH)twelve bulls for all Israel, ninety-six rams, seventy-seven lambs, twelve male goats for a sin offering, all as a burnt offering to the Lord. 36 Then (BI)they delivered the king’s edicts to (BJ)the king’s satraps and the governors in the provinces beyond the Euphrates River, and they supported the people and the house of God.
