⁸ For you were once^(A) darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light^{(B) 9} (for the fruit^(C) of the light consists in all goodness,^(D) righteousness and truth) ¹⁰ and find out what pleases the Lord.^{(E) 11} Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness,^(F) but rather expose them.

⁵ You are all children of the light^(A) and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. ⁶ So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep,^(B) but let us be awake^(C) and sober.^{(D) 7} For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night.^{(E) 8} But since we belong to the day,^(F) let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate,^(G) and the hope of salvation^(H) as a helmet.^(I)

¹³ for it is God who works in you^(A) to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.^(B)

¹⁴ Do everything without grumbling^(C) or arguing, ¹⁵ so that you may become blameless^(D) and pure, “children of God^(E) without fault in a warped and crooked generation.”^[a](F) Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky ¹⁶ as you hold firmly to the word of life. And then I will be able to boast on the day of Christ^(G) that I did not run^(H) or labor in vain.^(I)
