¹⁴ The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches^(A) and pleasures, and they do not mature.

⁸ See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy,^(A) which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces^[a] of this world^(B) rather than on Christ.

⁵ The widow who is really in need^(A) and left all alone puts her hope in God^(B) and continues night and day to pray^(C) and to ask God for help. ⁶ But the widow who lives for pleasure is dead even while she lives.^(D)
