Deuteronomy 10:12-22

Circumcise Your Heart

¹²“And now, Israel, ^(A)what does the Lord your God require of you, but ^(B)to fear the Lord your God, ^(C)to walk in all his ways, ^(D)to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, ¹³and ^(E)to keep the commandments and statutes of the Lord, which I am commanding you today ^(F)for your good? ¹⁴Behold, ^(G)to the Lord your God belong heaven and the heaven of heavens, ^(H)the earth with all that is in it. ¹⁵Yet ^(I)the Lord set his heart in love on your fathers and chose their offspring after them, you above all peoples, as you are this day. ¹⁶Circumcise therefore ^(J)the foreskin of your heart, and be no longer ^(K)stubborn. ¹⁷For the Lord your God is ^(L)God of gods and ^(M)Lord of lords, ^(N)the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who is ^(O)not partial and takes no bribe. ¹⁸^(P)He executes justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the sojourner, giving him food and clothing. ¹⁹^(Q)Love the sojourner, therefore, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt. ²⁰^(R)You shall fear the Lord your God. You shall serve him and ^(S)hold fast to him, and ^(T)by his name you shall swear. ²¹^(U)He is your praise. He is your God, ^(V)who has done for you these great and terrifying things that your eyes have seen. ²²Your fathers went down to Egypt ^(W)seventy persons, and now the Lord your God has made you ^(X)as numerous as the stars of heaven.

Repentance and Forgiveness

30 ^(A)“And ^(B)when all these things come upon you, the blessing and the curse, which I have set before you, and ^(C)you call them to mind among all the nations where the Lord your God has driven you, ²and ^(D)return to the Lord your God, you and your children, and obey his voice in all that I command you today, with all your heart and with all your soul, ³then the Lord your God ^(E)will restore your fortunes and have mercy on you, and he will ^(F)gather you again from all the peoples where the Lord your God has scattered you. ⁴^(G)If your outcasts are in the uttermost parts of heaven, from there the Lord your God will gather you, and from there he will take you. ⁵And the Lord your God will bring you into the land that your fathers possessed, that you may possess it. ^(H)And he will make you more prosperous and numerous than your fathers. ⁶And ^(I)the Lord your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your offspring, ^(J)so that you will love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, that you may live. ⁷And the Lord your God will put all these curses on your foes and enemies who persecuted you. ⁸And you shall again obey the voice of the Lord and keep all his commandments that I command you today. ⁹^(K)The Lord your God will make you abundantly prosperous in all the work of your hand, in the fruit of your womb and in the fruit of your cattle and in the fruit of your ground. ^(L)For the Lord will again take delight in prospering you, as he took delight in your fathers, ¹⁰when you obey the voice of the Lord your God, to keep his commandments and his statutes that are written in this Book of the Law, when you turn to the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

Jeremiah 4:1-4

4 “If you return, O Israel,
declares the Lord,
    ^(A)to me you should return.
If you remove your detestable things from my presence,
    ^(B)and do not waver,
²^(C)and if you swear, ‘As the Lord lives,’
    in truth, in justice, and in righteousness,
then ^(D)nations shall bless themselves in him,
    ^(E)and in him shall they glory.”

³For thus says the Lord to the men of Judah and Jerusalem:

^(F)“Break up your fallow ground,
    and ^(G)sow not among thorns.
⁴^(H)Circumcise yourselves to the Lord;
    remove the foreskin of your hearts,
    O men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem;
^(I)lest my wrath go forth like fire,
    and burn with none to quench it,
    ^(J)because of the evil of your deeds.”
