Deuteronomy 6:4-9

New International Version

⁴Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.^[a]^(A) ⁵Love^(B) the Lord your God with all your heart^(C) and with all your soul and with all your strength.^(D) ⁶These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts.^(E) ⁷Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.^(F) ⁸Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.^(G) ⁹Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.^(H)

Psalm 78:5-8

New International Version

⁵He decreed statutes^(A) for Jacob^(B)
    and established the law in Israel,
which he commanded our ancestors
    to teach their children,
⁶so the next generation would know them,
    even the children yet to be born,^(C)
    and they in turn would tell their children.
⁷Then they would put their trust in God
    and would not forget^(D) his deeds
    but would keep his commands.^(E)
⁸They would not be like their ancestors^(F)—
    a stubborn^(G) and rebellious^(H) generation,
whose hearts were not loyal to God,
    whose spirits were not faithful to him.
