Deuteronomy 9:23-10:5

New International Version

²³And when the Lord sent you out from Kadesh Barnea,^(A) he said, “Go up and take possession^(B) of the land I have given you.” But you rebelled^(C) against the command of the Lord your God. You did not trust^(D) him or obey him. ²⁴You have been rebellious against the Lord ever since I have known you.^(E)

²⁵I lay prostrate before the Lord those forty days and forty nights^(F) because the Lord had said he would destroy you.^(G) ²⁶I prayed to the Lord and said, “Sovereign Lord, do not destroy your people,^(H) your own inheritance^(I) that you redeemed^(J) by your great power and brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand.^(K) ²⁷Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Overlook the stubbornness^(L) of this people, their wickedness and their sin. ²⁸Otherwise, the country^(M) from which you brought us will say, ‘Because the Lord was not able to take them into the land he had promised them, and because he hated them,^(N) he brought them out to put them to death in the wilderness.’^(O) ²⁹But they are your people,^(P) your inheritance^(Q) that you brought out by your great power and your outstretched arm.^(R)”

Tablets Like the First Ones

10 At that time the Lord said to me, “Chisel out two stone tablets^(S) like the first ones and come up to me on the mountain. Also make a wooden ark.^[a] ²I will write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke. Then you are to put them in the ark.”^(T)

³So I made the ark out of acacia wood^(U) and chiseled^(V) out two stone tablets like the first ones, and I went up on the mountain with the two tablets in my hands. ⁴The Lord wrote on these tablets what he had written before, the Ten Commandments^(W) he had proclaimed^(X) to you on the mountain, out of the fire, on the day of the assembly.^(Y) And the Lord gave them to me. ⁵Then I came back down the mountain^(Z) and put the tablets in the ark^(AA) I had made,^(AB) as the Lord commanded me, and they are there now.^(AC)

¹The Mighty One, God, the Lord,^(A)
    speaks and summons the earth
    from the rising of the sun to where it sets.^(B)
²From Zion,^(C) perfect in beauty,^(D)
    God shines forth.^(E)
³Our God comes^(F)
    and will not be silent;^(G)
a fire devours^(H) before him,^(I)
    and around him a tempest^(J) rages.
⁴He summons the heavens above,
    and the earth,^(K) that he may judge his people:^(L)
⁵“Gather to me this consecrated people,^(M)
    who made a covenant^(N) with me by sacrifice.”
⁶And the heavens proclaim^(O) his righteousness,
    for he is a God of justice.^[a]^[b]^(P)

⁷“Listen, my people, and I will speak;
    I will testify^(Q) against you, Israel:
    I am God, your God.^(R)
⁸I bring no charges^(S) against you concerning your sacrifices
    or concerning your burnt offerings,^(T) which are ever before me.
⁹I have no need of a bull^(U) from your stall
    or of goats^(V) from your pens,^(W)
¹⁰for every animal of the forest^(X) is mine,
    and the cattle on a thousand hills.^(Y)
¹¹I know every bird^(Z) in the mountains,
    and the insects in the fields^(AA) are mine.
¹²If I were hungry I would not tell you,
    for the world^(AB) is mine, and all that is in it.^(AC)
¹³Do I eat the flesh of bulls
    or drink the blood of goats?

¹⁴“Sacrifice thank offerings^(AD) to God,
fulfill your vows^(AE) to the Most High,^(AF)
¹⁵and call^(AG) on me in the day of trouble;^(AH)
I will deliver^(AI) you, and you will honor^(AJ) me.”

¹⁶But to the wicked person, God says:

“What right have you to recite my laws
    or take my covenant^(AK) on your lips?^(AL)
¹⁷You hate^(AM) my instruction
    and cast my words behind^(AN) you.
¹⁸When you see a thief, you join^(AO) with him;
    you throw in your lot with adulterers.^(AP)
¹⁹You use your mouth for evil
    and harness your tongue to deceit.^(AQ)
²⁰You sit and testify against your brother^(AR)
    and slander your own mother’s son.
²¹When you did these things and I kept silent,^(AS)
    you thought I was exactly^[c] like you.
But I now arraign^(AT) you
    and set my accusations^(AU) before you.

²²“Consider this, you who forget God,^(AV)
or I will tear you to pieces, with no one to rescue you:^(AW)
²³Those who sacrifice thank offerings honor me,
and to the blameless^[d] I will show my salvation.^(AX)”

Hebrews 4:1-10

A Sabbath-Rest for the People of God

4 Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it.^(A) ²For we also have had the good news proclaimed to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because they did not share the faith of those who obeyed.^[a]^(B) ³Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said,

“So I declared on oath in my anger,
‘They shall never enter my rest.’”^[b]^(C)

And yet his works have been finished since the creation of the world. ⁴For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: “On the seventh day God rested from all his works.”^[c]^(D) ⁵And again in the passage above he says, “They shall never enter my rest.”^(E)

⁶Therefore since it still remains for some to enter that rest, and since those who formerly had the good news proclaimed to them did not go in because of their disobedience,^(F) ⁷God again set a certain day, calling it “Today.” This he did when a long time later he spoke through David, as in the passage already quoted:

“Today, if you hear his voice,
do not harden your hearts.”^[d]^(G)

⁸For if Joshua had given them rest,^(H) God would not have spoken^(I) later about another day. ⁹There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; ¹⁰for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works,^[e]^(J) just as God did from his.^(K)

¹⁶For God so loved^(A) the world that he gave^(B) his one and only Son,^(C) that whoever believes^(D) in him shall not perish but have eternal life.^(E) ¹⁷For God did not send his Son into the world^(F) to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.^(G) ¹⁸Whoever believes in him is not condemned,^(H) but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.^(I) ¹⁹This is the verdict: Light^(J) has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.^(K) ²⁰Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed.^(L) ²¹But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.
