El gran mandamiento
6 Estos, pues, son los mandamientos, estatutos y decretos que Jehová vuestro Dios mandó que os enseñase, para que los pongáis por obra en la tierra a la cual pasáis vosotros para tomarla; 2 para que temas a Jehová tu Dios, guardando todos sus estatutos y sus mandamientos que yo te mando, tú, tu hijo, y el hijo de tu hijo, todos los días de tu vida, para que tus días sean prolongados. 3 Oye, pues, oh Israel, y cuida de ponerlos por obra, para que te vaya bien en la tierra que fluye leche y miel, y os multipliquéis, como te ha dicho Jehová el Dios de tus padres.
4 Oye, Israel: Jehová nuestro Dios, Jehová uno es.(A) 5 Y amarás a Jehová tu Dios de todo tu corazón, y de toda tu alma, y con todas tus fuerzas.(B) 6 Y estas palabras que yo te mando hoy, estarán sobre tu corazón; 7 y las repetirás a tus hijos, y hablarás de ellas estando en tu casa, y andando por el camino, y al acostarte, y cuando te levantes. 8 Y las atarás como una señal en tu mano, y estarán como frontales entre tus ojos; 9 y las escribirás en los postes de tu casa, y en tus puertas.(C)
Exhortaciones a la obediencia
10 Cuando Jehová tu Dios te haya introducido en la tierra que juró a tus padres Abraham,(D) Isaac(E) y Jacob(F) que te daría, en ciudades grandes y buenas que tú no edificaste, 11 y casas llenas de todo bien, que tú no llenaste, y cisternas cavadas que tú no cavaste, viñas y olivares que no plantaste, y luego que comas y te sacies, 12 cuídate de no olvidarte de Jehová, que te sacó de la tierra de Egipto, de casa de servidumbre. 13 A Jehová tu Dios temerás, y a él sólo servirás,(G) y por su nombre jurarás. 14 No andaréis en pos de dioses ajenos, de los dioses de los pueblos que están en vuestros contornos; 15 porque el Dios celoso, Jehová tu Dios, en medio de ti está; para que no se inflame el furor de Jehová tu Dios contra ti, y te destruya de sobre la tierra.
16 No tentaréis a Jehová vuestro Dios,(H) como lo tentasteis en Masah.(I) 17 Guardad cuidadosamente los mandamientos de Jehová vuestro Dios, y sus testimonios y sus estatutos que te ha mandado. 18 Y haz lo recto y bueno ante los ojos de Jehová, para que te vaya bien, y entres y poseas la buena tierra que Jehová juró a tus padres; 19 para que él arroje a tus enemigos de delante de ti, como Jehová ha dicho.
20 Mañana cuando te preguntare tu hijo, diciendo: ¿Qué significan los testimonios y estatutos y decretos que Jehová nuestro Dios os mandó? 21 entonces dirás a tu hijo: Nosotros éramos siervos de Faraón en Egipto, y Jehová nos sacó de Egipto con mano poderosa. 22 Jehová hizo señales y milagros grandes y terribles en Egipto, sobre Faraón y sobre toda su casa, delante de nuestros ojos; 23 y nos sacó de allá, para traernos y darnos la tierra que juró a nuestros padres. 24 Y nos mandó Jehová que cumplamos todos estos estatutos, y que temamos a Jehová nuestro Dios, para que nos vaya bien todos los días, y para que nos conserve la vida, como hasta hoy. 25 Y tendremos justicia cuando cuidemos de poner por obra todos estos mandamientos delante de Jehová nuestro Dios, como él nos ha mandado.

6 ESTOS pues son los mandamientos, estatutos, y derechos que Jehová vuestro Dios mandó que os enseñase, para que los pongáis por obra en la tierra á la cual pasáis vosotros para poseerla:
2 Para que temas á Jehová tu Dios, guardando todos sus estatutos y sus mandamientos que yo te mando, tú, y tu hijo, y el hijo de tu hijo, todos los días de tu vida, y que tus días sean prolongados.
3 Oye pues, oh Israel, y cuida de ponerlos por obra, para que te vaya bien, y seáis multiplicados, como te ha dicho Jehová el Dios de tus padres, en la tierra que destila leche y miel.
4 Oye, Israel: Jehová nuestro Dios, Jehová uno es:
5 Y Amarás á Jehová tu Dios de todo tu corazón, y de toda tu alma, y con todo tu poder.
6 Y estas palabras que yo te mando hoy, estarán sobre tu corazón:
7 Y las repetirás á tus hijos, y hablarás de ellas estando en tu casa, y andando por el camino, y al acostarte, y cuando te levantes:
8 Y has de atarlas por señal en tu mano, y estarán por frontales entre tus ojos:
9 Y las escribirás en los postes de tu casa, y en tus portadas.
10 Y será, cuando Jehová tu Dios te hubiere introducido en la tierra que juró á tus padres Abraham, Isaac, y Jacob, que te daría; en ciudades grandes y buenas que tú no edificaste,
11 Y casas llenas de todo bien, que tú no henchiste, y cisternas cavadas, que tú no cavaste, viñas y olivares que no plantaste: luego que comieres y te hartares,
12 Guárdate que no te olvides de Jehová, que te sacó de tierra de Egipto, de casa de siervos.
13 A Jehová tu Dios temerás, y á él servirás, y por su nombre jurarás.
14 No andaréis en pos de dioses ajenos, de los dioses de los pueblos que están en vuestros contornos:
15 Porque el Dios celoso, Jehová tu Dios, en medio de ti está; porque no se inflame el furor de Jehová tu Dios contra ti, y te destruya de sobre la haz de la tierra.
16 No tentaréis á Jehová vuestro Dios, como lo tentasteis en Massa.
17 Guardad cuidadosamente los mandamientos de Jehová vuestro Dios, y sus testimonios, y sus estatutos, que te ha mandado.
18 Y harás lo recto y bueno en ojos de Jehová, para que te vaya bien, y entres y poseas la buena tierra que Jehová juró á tus padres;
19 Para que él eche á todos sus enemigos de delante de ti, como Jehová ha dicho.
20 Cuando mañana te preguntare tu hijo, diciendo: ¿Qué significan los testimonios, y estatutos, y derechos, que Jehová nuestro Dios os mandó?
21 Entonces dirás á tu hijo: Nosotros éramos siervos de Faraón en Egipto, y Jehová nos sacó de Egipto con mano fuerte;
22 Y dió Jehová señales y milagros grandes y nocivos en Egipto, sobre Faraón y sobre toda su casa, delante de nuestros ojos;
23 Y sacónos de allá, para traernos y darnos la tierra que juró á nuestros padres;
24 Y mandónos Jehová que ejecutásemos todos estos estatutos, y que temamos á Jehová nuestro Dios, porque nos vaya bien todos los días, y para que nos dé vida, como hoy.
25 Y tendremos justicia cuando cuidáremos de poner por obra todos estos mandamientos delante de Jehová nuestro Dios, como él nos ha mandado.

6 Now these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments, which the Lord your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go to possess it:
2 That thou mightest fear the Lord thy God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son's son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged.
3 Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe to do it; that it may be well with thee, and that ye may increase mightily, as the Lord God of thy fathers hath promised thee, in the land that floweth with milk and honey.
4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord:
5 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.
6 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:
7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
8 And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.
9 And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.
10 And it shall be, when the Lord thy God shall have brought thee into the land which he sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee great and goodly cities, which thou buildedst not,
11 And houses full of all good things, which thou filledst not, and wells digged, which thou diggedst not, vineyards and olive trees, which thou plantedst not; when thou shalt have eaten and be full;
12 Then beware lest thou forget the Lord, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.
13 Thou shalt fear the Lord thy God, and serve him, and shalt swear by his name.
14 Ye shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the people which are round about you;
15 (For the Lord thy God is a jealous God among you) lest the anger of the Lord thy God be kindled against thee, and destroy thee from off the face of the earth.
16 Ye shall not tempt the Lord your God, as ye tempted him in Massah.
17 Ye shall diligently keep the commandments of the Lord your God, and his testimonies, and his statutes, which he hath commanded thee.
18 And thou shalt do that which is right and good in the sight of the Lord: that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayest go in and possess the good land which the Lord sware unto thy fathers.
19 To cast out all thine enemies from before thee, as the Lord hath spoken.
20 And when thy son asketh thee in time to come, saying, What mean the testimonies, and the statutes, and the judgments, which the Lord our God hath commanded you?
21 Then thou shalt say unto thy son, We were Pharaoh's bondmen in Egypt; and the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand:
22 And the Lord shewed signs and wonders, great and sore, upon Egypt, upon Pharaoh, and upon all his household, before our eyes:
23 And he brought us out from thence, that he might bring us in, to give us the land which he sware unto our fathers.
24 And the Lord commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the Lord our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as it is at this day.
25 And it shall be our righteousness, if we observe to do all these commandments before the Lord our God, as he hath commanded us.

6 “Now this is the command; the statutes and the judgments (precepts) which the Lord your God has commanded me to teach you, so that you might do (follow, obey) them in the land which you are crossing over [the Jordan] to possess, 2 so that you and your son and your grandson may fear and worship the Lord your God [with awe-filled reverence and profound respect], to keep [and actively do] all His statutes and His commandments which I am commanding you, all the days of your life, so that your days may be prolonged. 3 Therefore listen, O Israel, and be careful to do them, that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly [in numbers], as the Lord, the God of your fathers, has promised you, in a land [a]flowing with milk and honey.
4 “Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one [the only God]! 5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and mind and with all your soul and with all your strength [your entire being]. 6 These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be [written] on your heart and mind. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your [b]children [impressing God’s precepts on their minds and penetrating their hearts with His truths] and shall speak of them when you sit in your house and when you walk on the road and when you lie down and when you get up. 8 And you shall bind them as a sign on your hand (forearm), and they shall be used as [c]bands (frontals, frontlets) on your forehead. 9 You shall write them on the [d]doorposts of your house and on your gates.
10 “Then it shall come about when the Lord your God brings you into the land which He swore (solemnly promised) to [give] your fathers—to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—to give you, [a land with] great and splendid cities which you did not build, 11 and houses full of all good things which you did not fill, and hewn (excavated) cisterns (wells) which you did not dig out, and vineyards and olive trees which you did not plant, and you eat and are full and satisfied, 12 then [e]beware that you do not forget the Lord who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 13 You shall fear [only] the Lord your God; and you shall serve Him [with awe-filled reverence and profound respect] and swear [oaths] by His name [alone]. 14 You shall not follow other gods, any of the gods of the peoples who surround you, 15 for the Lord your God who is among you is a [f]jealous (impassioned) God [demanding what is rightfully and uniquely His]—otherwise the anger of the Lord your God will be kindled and burn against you, and He will destroy you from the face of the earth.
16 “You shall not put the Lord your God to the test, as you tested Him at Massah.(A) 17 You shall diligently keep [foremost in your thoughts and actively do] the commandments of the Lord your God, and His testimonies and His statutes which He has commanded you. 18 You shall do what is right and good in the sight of the Lord, so that it may be well with you and that you may go in and possess the good land which the Lord swore to [give] your fathers, 19 by driving out all your enemies from before you, as the Lord has spoken.
20 “When your son asks you in time to come, saying, ‘What is the meaning of the testimonies and statutes and judgments (precepts) which the Lord our God has commanded you?’ 21 then you shall say to your son, ‘We were Pharaoh’s slaves in Egypt, and the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand. 22 Moreover, the Lord showed great and terrible signs and wonders before our eyes against Egypt, Pharaoh and all his household; 23 He brought us out from there in order to bring us in, to give us the land which He had sworn to [give] our fathers.’ 24 So the Lord commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear [and worship] the Lord our God [with awe-filled reverence and profound respect] for our good always and so that He might preserve us alive, as it is today. 25 It will be [considered] righteousness for us [that is, right standing with God] if we are careful to observe all this commandment before the Lord our God—just as He has commanded us.

- Deuteronomy 6:3 This phrase referred to the abundant fertility of the land of Canaan. Milk (typically that of goats and sheep) was associated with abundance; “honey” referred mainly to syrups made from dates or grapes and was the epitome of sweetness. Bees’ honey was very rare and was considered the choicest of foods.
- Deuteronomy 6:7 Lit sons.
- Deuteronomy 6:8 Or phylacteries. This is originally a Greek word meaning “safeguard.” In Jewish tradition these are also called tefillin, and are understood to be small leather boxes tied to the forearm and to the top of the head with leather straps. The boxes contain small parchment copies of the passage found here and three others.
- Deuteronomy 6:9 Heb mezuzoth, which—like tefillin (v 8)—also have special significance in Jewish tradition. The (singular) mezuzah is a piece of parchment on which is written this passage (6:4-9) and 11:13-21. The parchment is encased to protect it, and is attached to the right doorpost. By Jewish law, all rooms where people live or sleep (excluding bathrooms) are required to have mezuzoth on the doorposts.
