Deuteronomy 6:20-25

²⁰“^(A)When your son asks you in time to come, saying, ‘What do the provisions and the statutes and the judgments mean which the Lord our God commanded you?’ ²¹then you shall say to your son, ‘We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt, and the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand. ²²Moreover, the Lord provided great and terrible signs and wonders before our eyes against Egypt, Pharaoh, and all his household; ²³He brought us out of there in order to bring us in, to give us the land which He had sworn to our fathers.’ ²⁴So the Lord commanded us to ^[a]follow all these statutes, ^(B)to fear the Lord our God for our own good always and ^(C)for our survival, as it is today. ²⁵And ^(D)it will be righteousness for us if we are careful to ^[b]follow all this commandment before the Lord our God, just as He commanded us.

²⁰“In the future your children will ask you, ‘What is the meaning of these laws, decrees, and regulations that the Lord our God has commanded us to obey?’

²¹“Then you must tell them, ‘We were Pharaoh’s slaves in Egypt, but the Lord brought us out of Egypt with his strong hand. ²²The Lord did miraculous signs and wonders before our eyes, dealing terrifying blows against Egypt and Pharaoh and all his people. ²³He brought us out of Egypt so he could give us this land he had sworn to give our ancestors. ²⁴And the Lord our God commanded us to obey all these decrees and to fear him so he can continue to bless us and preserve our lives, as he has done to this day. ²⁵For we will be counted as righteous when we obey all the commands the Lord our God has given us.’

²⁰In the future, when your son asks you,^(A) “What is the meaning of the stipulations, decrees and laws the Lord our God has commanded you?” ²¹tell him: “We were slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt, but the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand.^(B) ²²Before our eyes the Lord sent signs and wonders—great and terrible—on Egypt and Pharaoh and his whole household. ²³But he brought us out from there to bring us in and give us the land he promised on oath to our ancestors. ²⁴The Lord commanded us to obey all these decrees and to fear the Lord our God,^(C) so that we might always prosper and be kept alive, as is the case today.^(D) ²⁵And if we are careful to obey all this law^(E) before the Lord our God, as he has commanded us, that will be our righteousness.^(F)”
