16 (A)“You shall not put the Lord your God to the test, (B)as you tested him at Massah. 17 You shall (C)diligently keep the commandments of the Lord your God, and his testimonies and his statutes, which he has commanded you. 18 (D)And you shall do what is right and good in the sight of the Lord, that it may go well with you, and that you may go in and take possession of the good land that the Lord swore to give to your fathers 19 (E)by thrusting out all your enemies from before you, as the Lord has promised.

20 (F)“When your son asks you in time to come, ‘What is the meaning of the testimonies and the statutes and the rules that the Lord our God has commanded you?’ 21 then you shall say to your son, (G)‘We were Pharaoh's slaves in Egypt. And the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand. 22 And (H)the Lord showed signs and wonders, great and grievous, against Egypt and against Pharaoh and all his household, before our eyes. 23 And he brought us out from there, that he might bring us in and give us the land that he swore to give to our fathers. 24 And the Lord commanded us to do all these statutes, (I)to fear the Lord our God, (J)for our good always, that (K)he might preserve us alive, as we are this day. 25 And (L)it will be righteousness for us, if we are careful to do all this commandment before the Lord our God, as he has commanded us.’

A Chosen People

“When the (M)Lord your God brings you into the land that you are entering to take possession of it, and clears away many nations before you, (N)the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations (O)more numerous and mightier than you, (P)and when the Lord your God gives them over to you, and you defeat them, then you must (Q)devote them to complete destruction.[a] (R)You shall make no covenant with them and show no mercy to them. (S)You shall not intermarry with them, giving your daughters to their sons or taking their daughters for your sons, for they would turn away your sons from following me, to serve other gods. (T)Then the anger of the Lord would be kindled against you, and he would destroy you (U)quickly. But thus shall you deal with them: (V)you shall break down their altars and dash in pieces their (W)pillars and chop down their (X)Asherim and (Y)burn their carved images with fire.

“For (Z)you are a people holy to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you to be (AA)a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth. It was not because you were more in number than any other people that the Lord set his love on you and chose you, for you were the fewest of all peoples, but (AB)it is because the Lord loves you and is keeping (AC)the oath that he swore to your fathers, that the Lord has brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, (AD)the faithful God (AE)who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations, 10 and (AF)repays to their face those who hate him, by destroying them. (AG)He will not be slack with one who hates him. He will repay him to his face. 11 (AH)You shall therefore be careful to do the commandment and the statutes and the rules that I command you today.

12 (AI)“And because you listen to these rules and keep and do them, the Lord your God will keep with you (AJ)the covenant and the steadfast love that he swore to your fathers. 13 He will (AK)love you, bless you, and multiply you. (AL)He will also bless the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground, your grain and your wine and your oil, the increase of your herds and the young of your flock, in the land that he swore to your fathers to give you. 14 You shall be blessed above all peoples. (AM)There shall not be male or female barren among you or among your livestock. 15 And the Lord will take away from you all sickness, and none of the evil (AN)diseases of Egypt, which you knew, will he inflict on you, but he will lay them on all who hate you. 16 And (AO)you shall consume all the peoples that the Lord your God will give over to you. (AP)Your eye shall not pity them, neither shall you serve their gods, for that would be (AQ)a snare to you.

17 “If you say in your heart, ‘These nations are greater than I. How can I dispossess them?’ 18 (AR)you shall not be afraid of them but you shall (AS)remember what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt, 19 the great trials that your eyes saw, (AT)the signs, the wonders, the mighty hand, and the outstretched arm, by which the Lord your God brought you out. So will the Lord your God do to all the peoples of whom you are afraid. 20 Moreover, (AU)the Lord your God will send hornets among them, until those who are left and hide themselves from you are destroyed. 21 You shall not be in dread of them, for the Lord your God is (AV)in your midst, (AW)a great and awesome God. 22 (AX)The Lord your God will clear away these nations before you little by little. You may not make an end of them at once,[b] lest the wild beasts grow too numerous for you. 23 (AY)But the Lord your God will give them over to you and throw them into great confusion, until they are destroyed. 24 And (AZ)he will give their kings into your hand, and you shall (BA)make their name perish from under heaven. (BB)No one shall be able to stand against you until you have destroyed them. 25 The carved images of their gods (BC)you shall burn with fire. You (BD)shall not covet the silver or the gold that is on them or take it for yourselves, lest you be (BE)ensnared by it, for it is an abomination to the Lord your God. 26 And you shall not bring an abominable thing into your house and become devoted to destruction[c] like it. You shall utterly detest and abhor it, (BF)for it is devoted to destruction.

Remember the Lord Your God

“The whole commandment that I command you today (BG)you shall be careful to do, that you may live and multiply, and go in and possess the land that the Lord swore to give to your fathers. And you shall remember the whole way that the Lord your God has led you (BH)these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, (BI)testing you (BJ)to know what was in your heart, (BK)whether you would keep his commandments or not. And he humbled you and (BL)let you hunger and (BM)fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that (BN)man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word[d] that comes from the mouth of the Lord. (BO)Your clothing did not wear out on you and your foot did not swell these forty years. Know then in your heart that, (BP)as a man disciplines his son, the Lord your God disciplines you. So you shall keep the commandments of the Lord your God by walking in his ways and by fearing him. For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land, (BQ)a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, flowing out in the valleys and hills, a land of wheat and barley, (BR)of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive trees and honey, a land in which you will eat bread without scarcity, in which you will lack nothing, a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills you can dig copper. 10 And you shall eat and be full, and you shall bless the Lord your God for the good land he has given you.

11 “Take care lest you forget the Lord your God by not keeping his commandments and his rules and his statutes, which I command you today, 12 (BS)lest, when you have eaten and are full and have built good houses and live in them, 13 and when your herds and flocks multiply and your silver and gold is multiplied and all that you have is multiplied, 14 (BT)then your heart be lifted up, and you (BU)forget the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, 15 who (BV)led you through the great and terrifying wilderness, (BW)with its fiery serpents and scorpions (BX)and thirsty ground where there was no water, (BY)who brought you water out of the flinty rock, 16 who fed you in the wilderness with (BZ)manna that your fathers did not know, that he might humble you and test you, (CA)to do you good in the end. 17 Beware (CB)lest you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth.’ 18 You shall remember the Lord your God, for (CC)it is he who gives you power to get wealth, (CD)that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your fathers, as it is this day. 19 And if you forget the Lord your God and go after other gods and serve them and worship them, (CE)I solemnly warn you today that you shall surely perish. 20 Like the nations that the Lord makes to perish before you, (CF)so shall you perish, because you would not obey the voice of the Lord your God.

Not Because of Righteousness

“Hear, O Israel: you are (CG)to cross over the Jordan today, to go in to dispossess nations (CH)greater and mightier than you, cities great and fortified up to heaven, a people great and tall, (CI)the sons of the Anakim, (CJ)whom you know, and of whom you have heard it said, ‘Who can stand before the sons of Anak?’ Know therefore today that he who (CK)goes over before you (CL)as a consuming fire is the Lord your God. He will destroy them and subdue them before you. (CM)So you shall drive them out and make them perish quickly, as the Lord has promised you.

(CN)“Do not say in your heart, after the Lord your God has thrust them out before you, ‘It is because of my righteousness that the Lord has brought me in to possess this land,’ whereas it is (CO)because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is driving them out before you. (CP)Not because of your righteousness or the uprightness of your heart are you going in to possess their land, but because of the wickedness of these nations the Lord your God is driving them out from before you, and that he may confirm (CQ)the word that the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

“Know, therefore, that the Lord your God is not giving you this good land to possess because of your righteousness, for you are (CR)a stubborn people. Remember and do not forget how you provoked the Lord your God to wrath in the wilderness. (CS)From the day you came out of the land of Egypt until you came to this place, you have been rebellious against the Lord. Even (CT)at Horeb you provoked the Lord to wrath, and the Lord was so angry with you that he was ready to destroy you. (CU)When I went up the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant that the Lord made with you, I remained on the mountain (CV)forty days and forty nights. I neither ate bread nor drank water. 10 And (CW)the Lord gave me the two tablets of stone written with the finger of God, and on them were all the words that the Lord had spoken with you on the mountain out of the midst of the fire (CX)on the day of the assembly. 11 And at the end of forty days and forty nights the Lord gave me the two tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant. 12 Then the Lord said to me, (CY)‘Arise, go down quickly from here, for your people whom you have brought from Egypt have acted corruptly. They have (CZ)turned aside quickly out of the way that I commanded them; they have made themselves a metal image.’

The Golden Calf

13 (DA)“Furthermore, the Lord said to me, ‘I have seen this people, and behold, it is (DB)a stubborn people. 14 (DC)Let me alone, that I may destroy them and (DD)blot out their name from under heaven. And (DE)I will make of you a nation mightier and greater than they.’ 15 (DF)So I turned and came down from the mountain, and (DG)the mountain was burning with fire. And the two tablets of the covenant were in my two hands. 16 And (DH)I looked, and behold, you had sinned against the Lord your God. You had made yourselves a golden[e] calf. (DI)You had turned aside quickly from the way that the Lord had commanded you. 17 So I took hold of the two tablets and threw them out of my two hands and broke them before your eyes. 18 Then I (DJ)lay prostrate before the Lord (DK)as before, forty days and forty nights. I neither ate bread nor drank water, because of all the sin that you had committed, (DL)in doing what was evil in the sight of the Lord to provoke him to anger. 19 For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure that the Lord bore against you, so that he was ready to destroy you. (DM)But the Lord listened to me that time also. 20 And the Lord was so angry with Aaron that he was ready to destroy him. And I prayed for Aaron also at the same time. 21 Then (DN)I took the sinful thing, the calf that you had made, and burned it with fire and crushed it, grinding it very small, until it was as fine as dust. And I threw the dust of it into the brook that ran down from the mountain.

22 “At (DO)Taberah also, and at (DP)Massah and at (DQ)Kibroth-hattaavah you provoked the Lord to wrath. 23 And (DR)when the Lord sent you from Kadesh-barnea, saying, ‘Go up and take possession of the land that I have given you,’ then you rebelled against the commandment of the Lord your God and (DS)did not believe him or obey his voice. 24 (DT)You have been rebellious against the Lord from the day that I knew you.

25 (DU)“So I lay prostrate before the Lord for these forty days and forty nights, because the Lord had said he would destroy you. 26 (DV)And I prayed to the Lord, ‘O Lord God, do not destroy your people and your heritage, whom you have redeemed through your greatness, whom you have brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand. 27 Remember your servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Do not regard the stubbornness of this people, or their wickedness or their sin, 28 lest the land from which you brought us say, (DW)“Because the Lord was not able to bring them into the land that he promised them, and because he hated them, he has brought them out to put them to death in the wilderness.” 29 (DX)For they are your people and your heritage, whom you brought out by your great power and by your outstretched arm.’

New Tablets of Stone

10 “At that time the Lord said to me, (DY)‘Cut for yourself two tablets of stone like the first, and come up to me on the mountain and (DZ)make an ark of wood. And I will write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets that you broke, and (EA)you shall put them in the ark.’ So I made an ark (EB)of acacia wood, and (EC)cut two tablets of stone like the first, and went up the mountain with the two tablets in my hand. And (ED)he wrote on the tablets, in the same writing as before, the Ten Commandments[f] (EE)that the Lord had spoken to you on the mountain out of the midst of the fire (EF)on the day of the assembly. And the Lord gave them to me. Then I turned and (EG)came down from the mountain and (EH)put the tablets in the ark that I had made. (EI)And there they are, as the Lord commanded me.”

(The people of Israel (EJ)journeyed from Beeroth Bene-jaakan[g] to Moserah. (EK)There Aaron died, and there he was buried. And his son Eleazar ministered as priest in his place. (EL)From there they journeyed to Gudgodah, and from Gudgodah to Jotbathah, a land with brooks of water. At that time (EM)the Lord set apart the tribe of Levi (EN)to carry the ark of the covenant of the Lord (EO)to stand before the Lord to minister to him and (EP)to bless in his name, to this day. (EQ)Therefore Levi has no portion or inheritance with his brothers. The Lord is his inheritance, as the Lord your God said to him.)

10 (ER)“I myself stayed on the mountain, as at the first time, forty days and forty nights, (ES)and the Lord listened to me that time also. The Lord was unwilling to destroy you. 11 (ET)And the Lord said to me, ‘Arise, go on your journey at the head of the people, so that they may go in and possess the land, which I swore to their fathers to give them.’

16 Do not put the Lord your God to the test(A) as you did at Massah. 17 Be sure to keep(B) the commands of the Lord your God and the stipulations and decrees he has given you.(C) 18 Do what is right and good in the Lord’s sight,(D) so that it may go well(E) with you and you may go in and take over the good land the Lord promised on oath to your ancestors, 19 thrusting out all your enemies(F) before you, as the Lord said.

20 In the future, when your son asks you,(G) “What is the meaning of the stipulations, decrees and laws the Lord our God has commanded you?” 21 tell him: “We were slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt, but the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand.(H) 22 Before our eyes the Lord sent signs and wonders—great and terrible—on Egypt and Pharaoh and his whole household. 23 But he brought us out from there to bring us in and give us the land he promised on oath to our ancestors. 24 The Lord commanded us to obey all these decrees and to fear the Lord our God,(I) so that we might always prosper and be kept alive, as is the case today.(J) 25 And if we are careful to obey all this law(K) before the Lord our God, as he has commanded us, that will be our righteousness.(L)

Driving Out the Nations

When the Lord your God brings you into the land you are entering to possess(M) and drives out before you many nations(N)—the Hittites,(O) Girgashites,(P) Amorites,(Q) Canaanites, Perizzites,(R) Hivites(S) and Jebusites,(T) seven nations larger and stronger than you— and when the Lord your God has delivered(U) them over to you and you have defeated them, then you must destroy(V) them totally.[a](W) Make no treaty(X) with them, and show them no mercy.(Y) Do not intermarry with them.(Z) Do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons, for they will turn your children away from following me to serve other gods,(AA) and the Lord’s anger will burn against you and will quickly destroy(AB) you. This is what you are to do to them: Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones, cut down their Asherah poles[b](AC) and burn their idols in the fire.(AD) For you are a people holy(AE) to the Lord your God.(AF) The Lord your God has chosen(AG) you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession.(AH)

The Lord did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous(AI) than other peoples, for you were the fewest(AJ) of all peoples.(AK) But it was because the Lord loved(AL) you and kept the oath he swore(AM) to your ancestors that he brought you out with a mighty hand(AN) and redeemed(AO) you from the land of slavery,(AP) from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt. Know therefore that the Lord your God is God;(AQ) he is the faithful God,(AR) keeping his covenant of love(AS) to a thousand generations(AT) of those who love him and keep his commandments.(AU) 10 But

those who hate him he will repay to their face by destruction;
he will not be slow to repay to their face those who hate him.(AV)

11 Therefore, take care to follow the commands, decrees and laws I give you today.

12 If you pay attention to these laws and are careful to follow them, then the Lord your God will keep his covenant of love with you, as he swore to your ancestors.(AW) 13 He will love you and bless you(AX) and increase your numbers.(AY) He will bless the fruit of your womb,(AZ) the crops of your land—your grain, new wine(BA) and olive oil(BB)—the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks in the land he swore to your ancestors to give you.(BC) 14 You will be blessed more than any other people; none of your men or women will be childless, nor will any of your livestock be without young.(BD) 15 The Lord will keep you free from every disease.(BE) He will not inflict on you the horrible diseases you knew in Egypt,(BF) but he will inflict them on all who hate you.(BG) 16 You must destroy all the peoples the Lord your God gives over to you.(BH) Do not look on them with pity(BI) and do not serve their gods,(BJ) for that will be a snare(BK) to you.

17 You may say to yourselves, “These nations are stronger than we are. How can we drive them out?(BL) 18 But do not be afraid(BM) of them; remember well what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt.(BN) 19 You saw with your own eyes the great trials, the signs and wonders, the mighty hand(BO) and outstretched arm, with which the Lord your God brought you out. The Lord your God will do the same to all the peoples you now fear.(BP) 20 Moreover, the Lord your God will send the hornet(BQ) among them until even the survivors who hide from you have perished. 21 Do not be terrified by them, for the Lord your God, who is among you,(BR) is a great and awesome God.(BS) 22 The Lord your God will drive out those nations before you, little by little.(BT) You will not be allowed to eliminate them all at once, or the wild animals will multiply around you. 23 But the Lord your God will deliver them over to you, throwing them into great confusion until they are destroyed.(BU) 24 He will give their kings(BV) into your hand,(BW) and you will wipe out their names from under heaven. No one will be able to stand up against you;(BX) you will destroy them.(BY) 25 The images of their gods you are to burn(BZ) in the fire. Do not covet(CA) the silver and gold on them, and do not take it for yourselves, or you will be ensnared(CB) by it, for it is detestable(CC) to the Lord your God. 26 Do not bring a detestable thing into your house or you, like it, will be set apart for destruction.(CD) Regard it as vile and utterly detest it, for it is set apart for destruction.

Do Not Forget the Lord

Be careful to follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live(CE) and increase and may enter and possess the land the Lord promised on oath to your ancestors.(CF) Remember how the Lord your God led(CG) you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test(CH) you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands. He humbled(CI) you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna,(CJ) which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach(CK) you that man does not live on bread(CL) alone but on every word that comes from the mouth(CM) of the Lord.(CN) Your clothes did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years.(CO) Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the Lord your God disciplines you.(CP)

Observe the commands of the Lord your God, walking in obedience to him(CQ) and revering him.(CR) For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land(CS)—a land with brooks, streams, and deep springs gushing out into the valleys and hills;(CT) a land with wheat and barley,(CU) vines(CV) and fig trees,(CW) pomegranates, olive oil and honey;(CX) a land where bread(CY) will not be scarce and you will lack nothing;(CZ) a land where the rocks are iron and you can dig copper out of the hills.(DA)

10 When you have eaten and are satisfied,(DB) praise the Lord your God for the good land he has given you. 11 Be careful that you do not forget(DC) the Lord your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day. 12 Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down,(DD) 13 and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, 14 then your heart will become proud and you will forget(DE) the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 15 He led you through the vast and dreadful wilderness,(DF) that thirsty and waterless land, with its venomous snakes(DG) and scorpions. He brought you water out of hard rock.(DH) 16 He gave you manna(DI) to eat in the wilderness, something your ancestors had never known,(DJ) to humble and test(DK) you so that in the end it might go well with you. 17 You may say to yourself,(DL) “My power and the strength of my hands(DM) have produced this wealth for me.” 18 But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth,(DN) and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.

19 If you ever forget the Lord your God and follow other gods(DO) and worship and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you will surely be destroyed.(DP) 20 Like the nations(DQ) the Lord destroyed before you, so you will be destroyed for not obeying the Lord your God.(DR)

Not Because of Israel’s Righteousness

Hear, Israel: You are now about to cross the Jordan(DS) to go in and dispossess nations greater and stronger than you,(DT) with large cities(DU) that have walls up to the sky.(DV) The people are strong and tall—Anakites! You know about them and have heard it said: “Who can stand up against the Anakites?”(DW) But be assured today that the Lord your God is the one who goes across ahead of you(DX) like a devouring fire.(DY) He will destroy them; he will subdue them before you. And you will drive them out and annihilate them quickly,(DZ) as the Lord has promised you.

After the Lord your God has driven them out before you, do not say to yourself,(EA) “The Lord has brought me here to take possession of this land because of my righteousness.” No, it is on account of the wickedness(EB) of these nations(EC) that the Lord is going to drive them out before you. It is not because of your righteousness or your integrity(ED) that you are going in to take possession of their land; but on account of the wickedness(EE) of these nations,(EF) the Lord your God will drive them out(EG) before you, to accomplish what he swore(EH) to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.(EI) Understand, then, that it is not because of your righteousness that the Lord your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are a stiff-necked people.(EJ)

The Golden Calf

Remember this and never forget how you aroused the anger(EK) of the Lord your God in the wilderness. From the day you left Egypt until you arrived here, you have been rebellious(EL) against the Lord.(EM) At Horeb you aroused the Lord’s wrath(EN) so that he was angry enough to destroy you.(EO) When I went up on the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant(EP) that the Lord had made with you, I stayed on the mountain forty days(EQ) and forty nights; I ate no bread and drank no water.(ER) 10 The Lord gave me two stone tablets inscribed by the finger of God.(ES) On them were all the commandments the Lord proclaimed to you on the mountain out of the fire, on the day of the assembly.(ET)

11 At the end of the forty days and forty nights,(EU) the Lord gave me the two stone tablets,(EV) the tablets of the covenant. 12 Then the Lord told me, “Go down from here at once, because your people whom you brought out of Egypt have become corrupt.(EW) They have turned away quickly(EX) from what I commanded them and have made an idol for themselves.”

13 And the Lord said to me, “I have seen this people(EY), and they are a stiff-necked people indeed! 14 Let me alone,(EZ) so that I may destroy them and blot out(FA) their name from under heaven.(FB) And I will make you into a nation stronger and more numerous than they.”

15 So I turned and went down from the mountain while it was ablaze with fire. And the two tablets of the covenant were in my hands.(FC) 16 When I looked, I saw that you had sinned against the Lord your God; you had made for yourselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf.(FD) You had turned aside quickly from the way that the Lord had commanded you. 17 So I took the two tablets and threw them out of my hands, breaking them to pieces before your eyes.

18 Then once again I fell(FE) prostrate before the Lord for forty days and forty nights; I ate no bread and drank no water,(FF) because of all the sin you had committed,(FG) doing what was evil in the Lord’s sight and so arousing his anger. 19 I feared the anger and wrath of the Lord, for he was angry enough with you to destroy you.(FH) But again the Lord listened to me.(FI) 20 And the Lord was angry enough with Aaron to destroy him, but at that time I prayed for Aaron too. 21 Also I took that sinful thing of yours, the calf you had made, and burned it in the fire. Then I crushed it and ground it to powder as fine as dust(FJ) and threw the dust into a stream that flowed down the mountain.(FK)

22 You also made the Lord angry(FL) at Taberah,(FM) at Massah(FN) and at Kibroth Hattaavah.(FO)

23 And when the Lord sent you out from Kadesh Barnea,(FP) he said, “Go up and take possession(FQ) of the land I have given you.” But you rebelled(FR) against the command of the Lord your God. You did not trust(FS) him or obey him. 24 You have been rebellious against the Lord ever since I have known you.(FT)

25 I lay prostrate before the Lord those forty days and forty nights(FU) because the Lord had said he would destroy you.(FV) 26 I prayed to the Lord and said, “Sovereign Lord, do not destroy your people,(FW) your own inheritance(FX) that you redeemed(FY) by your great power and brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand.(FZ) 27 Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Overlook the stubbornness(GA) of this people, their wickedness and their sin. 28 Otherwise, the country(GB) from which you brought us will say, ‘Because the Lord was not able to take them into the land he had promised them, and because he hated them,(GC) he brought them out to put them to death in the wilderness.’(GD) 29 But they are your people,(GE) your inheritance(GF) that you brought out by your great power and your outstretched arm.(GG)

Tablets Like the First Ones

10 At that time the Lord said to me, “Chisel out two stone tablets(GH) like the first ones and come up to me on the mountain. Also make a wooden ark.[c] I will write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke. Then you are to put them in the ark.”(GI)

So I made the ark out of acacia wood(GJ) and chiseled(GK) out two stone tablets like the first ones, and I went up on the mountain with the two tablets in my hands. The Lord wrote on these tablets what he had written before, the Ten Commandments(GL) he had proclaimed(GM) to you on the mountain, out of the fire, on the day of the assembly.(GN) And the Lord gave them to me. Then I came back down the mountain(GO) and put the tablets in the ark(GP) I had made,(GQ) as the Lord commanded me, and they are there now.(GR)

(The Israelites traveled from the wells of Bene Jaakan to Moserah.(GS) There Aaron died(GT) and was buried, and Eleazar(GU) his son succeeded him as priest.(GV) From there they traveled to Gudgodah and on to Jotbathah, a land with streams of water.(GW) At that time the Lord set apart the tribe of Levi(GX) to carry the ark of the covenant(GY) of the Lord, to stand before the Lord to minister(GZ) and to pronounce blessings(HA) in his name, as they still do today.(HB) That is why the Levites have no share or inheritance among their fellow Israelites; the Lord is their inheritance,(HC) as the Lord your God told them.)

10 Now I had stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights, as I did the first time, and the Lord listened to me at this time also. It was not his will to destroy you.(HD) 11 “Go,” the Lord said to me, “and lead the people on their way, so that they may enter and possess the land I swore to their ancestors to give them.”
