The Golden Calf

13 (A)“Furthermore, the Lord said to me, ‘I have seen this people, and behold, it is (B)a stubborn people. 14 (C)Let me alone, that I may destroy them and (D)blot out their name from under heaven. And (E)I will make of you a nation mightier and greater than they.’ 15 (F)So I turned and came down from the mountain, and (G)the mountain was burning with fire. And the two tablets of the covenant were in my two hands. 16 And (H)I looked, and behold, you had sinned against the Lord your God. You had made yourselves a golden[a] calf. (I)You had turned aside quickly from the way that the Lord had commanded you. 17 So I took hold of the two tablets and threw them out of my two hands and broke them before your eyes. 18 Then I (J)lay prostrate before the Lord (K)as before, forty days and forty nights. I neither ate bread nor drank water, because of all the sin that you had committed, (L)in doing what was evil in the sight of the Lord to provoke him to anger. 19 For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure that the Lord bore against you, so that he was ready to destroy you. (M)But the Lord listened to me that time also. 20 And the Lord was so angry with Aaron that he was ready to destroy him. And I prayed for Aaron also at the same time. 21 Then (N)I took the sinful thing, the calf that you had made, and burned it with fire and crushed it, grinding it very small, until it was as fine as dust. And I threw the dust of it into the brook that ran down from the mountain.

22 “At (O)Taberah also, and at (P)Massah and at (Q)Kibroth-hattaavah you provoked the Lord to wrath. 23 And (R)when the Lord sent you from Kadesh-barnea, saying, ‘Go up and take possession of the land that I have given you,’ then you rebelled against the commandment of the Lord your God and (S)did not believe him or obey his voice. 24 (T)You have been rebellious against the Lord from the day that I knew you.

25 (U)“So I lay prostrate before the Lord for these forty days and forty nights, because the Lord had said he would destroy you. 26 (V)And I prayed to the Lord, ‘O Lord God, do not destroy your people and your heritage, whom you have redeemed through your greatness, whom you have brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand. 27 Remember your servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Do not regard the stubbornness of this people, or their wickedness or their sin, 28 lest the land from which you brought us say, (W)“Because the Lord was not able to bring them into the land that he promised them, and because he hated them, he has brought them out to put them to death in the wilderness.” 29 (X)For they are your people and your heritage, whom you brought out by your great power and by your outstretched arm.’

13 And the Lord said to me, “I have seen this people(A), and they are a stiff-necked people indeed! 14 Let me alone,(B) so that I may destroy them and blot out(C) their name from under heaven.(D) And I will make you into a nation stronger and more numerous than they.”

15 So I turned and went down from the mountain while it was ablaze with fire. And the two tablets of the covenant were in my hands.(E) 16 When I looked, I saw that you had sinned against the Lord your God; you had made for yourselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf.(F) You had turned aside quickly from the way that the Lord had commanded you. 17 So I took the two tablets and threw them out of my hands, breaking them to pieces before your eyes.

18 Then once again I fell(G) prostrate before the Lord for forty days and forty nights; I ate no bread and drank no water,(H) because of all the sin you had committed,(I) doing what was evil in the Lord’s sight and so arousing his anger. 19 I feared the anger and wrath of the Lord, for he was angry enough with you to destroy you.(J) But again the Lord listened to me.(K) 20 And the Lord was angry enough with Aaron to destroy him, but at that time I prayed for Aaron too. 21 Also I took that sinful thing of yours, the calf you had made, and burned it in the fire. Then I crushed it and ground it to powder as fine as dust(L) and threw the dust into a stream that flowed down the mountain.(M)

22 You also made the Lord angry(N) at Taberah,(O) at Massah(P) and at Kibroth Hattaavah.(Q)

23 And when the Lord sent you out from Kadesh Barnea,(R) he said, “Go up and take possession(S) of the land I have given you.” But you rebelled(T) against the command of the Lord your God. You did not trust(U) him or obey him. 24 You have been rebellious against the Lord ever since I have known you.(V)

25 I lay prostrate before the Lord those forty days and forty nights(W) because the Lord had said he would destroy you.(X) 26 I prayed to the Lord and said, “Sovereign Lord, do not destroy your people,(Y) your own inheritance(Z) that you redeemed(AA) by your great power and brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand.(AB) 27 Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Overlook the stubbornness(AC) of this people, their wickedness and their sin. 28 Otherwise, the country(AD) from which you brought us will say, ‘Because the Lord was not able to take them into the land he had promised them, and because he hated them,(AE) he brought them out to put them to death in the wilderness.’(AF) 29 But they are your people,(AG) your inheritance(AH) that you brought out by your great power and your outstretched arm.(AI)

The vision of Obadiah.

Edom Will Be Humbled

Thus says the Lord God (A)concerning Edom:
(B)We have heard a report from the Lord,
    and a messenger has been sent among the nations:
“Rise up! Let us rise against her for battle!”
Behold, I will make you small among the nations;
    you shall be utterly despised.[a]
(C)The pride of your heart has deceived you,
    you who live in the clefts of the rock,[b]
    in your lofty dwelling,
(D)who say in your heart,
    “Who will bring me down to the ground?”
Though you soar aloft like the eagle,
    though your nest is set among the stars,
    from there I will bring you down,
declares the Lord.

If (E)thieves came to you,
    if plunderers came by night—
    how you have been destroyed!—
    would they not steal only enough for themselves?
If (F)grape gatherers came to you,
    would they not leave gleanings?
(G)How Esau has been pillaged,
    his treasures sought out!
All your allies have driven you to your border;
    those at peace with you have deceived you;
they have prevailed against you;
    (H)those who eat your bread[c] have set a trap beneath you—
    (I)you have[d] no understanding.

(J)Will I not on that day, declares the Lord,
    destroy the wise men out of Edom,
    and understanding out of (K)Mount Esau?
And your mighty men shall be dismayed, (L)O Teman,
    so that every man from (M)Mount Esau will be cut off by slaughter.

Edom's Violence Against Jacob

10 (N)Because of the violence done to your brother Jacob,
    shame shall cover you,
    (O)and you shall be cut off forever.
11 (P)On the day that you stood aloof,
    (Q)on the day that strangers carried off his wealth
and foreigners entered his gates
    (R)and cast lots for Jerusalem,
    you were like one of them.
12 (S)But do not gloat over the day of your brother
    in the day of his misfortune;
(T)do not rejoice over the people of Judah
    in the day of their ruin;
(U)do not boast[e]
    in the day of distress.
13 (V)Do not enter the gate of my people
    in the day of their calamity;
(W)do not gloat over his disaster
    in the day of his calamity;
(X)do not loot his wealth
    in the day of his calamity.
14 (Y)Do not stand at the crossroads
    to cut off his fugitives;
do not hand over his survivors
    in the day of distress.

The Day of the Lord Is Near

15 For (Z)the day of the Lord is near upon all the nations.
(AA)As you have done, it shall be done to you;
    your deeds shall return on your own head.
16 (AB)For as you have drunk on (AC)my holy mountain,
    so all the nations shall drink continually;
they shall drink and swallow,
    and shall be as though they had never been.
17 (AD)But in Mount Zion there shall be those who escape,
    and it shall be holy,
(AE)and the house of Jacob shall possess their own possessions.
18 (AF)The house of Jacob shall be a fire,
    and the house of Joseph a flame,
    and the house of Esau (AG)stubble;
they shall burn them and consume them,
    (AH)and there shall be no survivor for the house of Esau,
for the Lord has spoken.

The Kingdom of the Lord

19 Those of (AI)the Negeb (AJ)shall possess (AK)Mount Esau,
    and those of the Shephelah shall possess (AL)the land of the Philistines;
they shall possess the land of Ephraim and the land of (AM)Samaria,
    and Benjamin shall possess Gilead.
20 The exiles of this host of the people of Israel
    shall possess the land of the Canaanites as far as (AN)Zarephath,
and the exiles of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad
    shall possess the cities of the Negeb.
21 (AO)Saviors shall go up to Mount Zion
    to rule (AP)Mount Esau,
    and (AQ)the kingdom shall be the Lord's.

Obadiah’s Vision(A)(B)

The vision(C) of Obadiah.

This is what the Sovereign Lord says about Edom(D)

We have heard a message from the Lord:
    An envoy(E) was sent to the nations to say,
“Rise, let us go against her for battle”(F)

“See, I will make you small(G) among the nations;
    you will be utterly despised.
The pride(H) of your heart has deceived you,
    you who live in the clefts of the rocks[a](I)
    and make your home on the heights,
you who say to yourself,
    ‘Who can bring me down to the ground?’(J)
Though you soar like the eagle
    and make your nest(K) among the stars,
    from there I will bring you down,”(L)
declares the Lord.(M)
“If thieves came to you,
    if robbers in the night—
oh, what a disaster awaits you!—
    would they not steal only as much as they wanted?
If grape pickers came to you,
    would they not leave a few grapes?(N)
But how Esau will be ransacked,
    his hidden treasures pillaged!
All your allies(O) will force you to the border;
    your friends will deceive and overpower you;
those who eat your bread(P) will set a trap for you,[b]
    but you will not detect it.

“In that day,” declares the Lord,
    “will I not destroy(Q) the wise men of Edom,
    those of understanding in the mountains of Esau?
Your warriors, Teman,(R) will be terrified,
    and everyone in Esau’s mountains
    will be cut down in the slaughter.
10 Because of the violence(S) against your brother Jacob,(T)
    you will be covered with shame;
    you will be destroyed forever.(U)
11 On the day you stood aloof
    while strangers carried off his wealth
and foreigners entered his gates
    and cast lots(V) for Jerusalem,
    you were like one of them.(W)
12 You should not gloat(X) over your brother
    in the day of his misfortune,(Y)
nor rejoice(Z) over the people of Judah
    in the day of their destruction,(AA)
nor boast(AB) so much
    in the day of their trouble.(AC)
13 You should not march through the gates of my people
    in the day of their disaster,
nor gloat over them in their calamity(AD)
    in the day of their disaster,
nor seize their wealth
    in the day of their disaster.
14 You should not wait at the crossroads
    to cut down their fugitives,(AE)
nor hand over their survivors
    in the day of their trouble.

15 “The day of the Lord is near(AF)
    for all nations.
As you have done, it will be done to you;
    your deeds(AG) will return upon your own head.
16 Just as you drank(AH) on my holy hill,(AI)
    so all the nations will drink(AJ) continually;
they will drink and drink
    and be as if they had never been.(AK)
17 But on Mount Zion will be deliverance;(AL)
    it will be holy,(AM)
    and Jacob will possess his inheritance.(AN)
18 Jacob will be a fire
    and Joseph a flame;
Esau will be stubble,
    and they will set him on fire(AO) and destroy(AP) him.
There will be no survivors(AQ)
    from Esau.”
The Lord has spoken.

19 People from the Negev will occupy
    the mountains of Esau,
and people from the foothills will possess
    the land of the Philistines.(AR)
They will occupy the fields of Ephraim and Samaria,(AS)
    and Benjamin(AT) will possess Gilead.
20 This company of Israelite exiles who are in Canaan
    will possess the land as far as Zarephath;(AU)
the exiles from Jerusalem who are in Sepharad
    will possess the towns of the Negev.(AV)
21 Deliverers(AW) will go up on[c] Mount Zion
    to govern the mountains of Esau.

(J)I know my own and (K)my own know me, 15 (L)just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and (M)I lay down my life for the sheep. 16 And (N)I have other sheep that are not of this fold. (L)May it not be charged against them! 17 But (M)the Lord stood by me and (N)strengthened me, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and (O)all the Gentiles might hear it. So (P)I was rescued (Q)from the lion's mouth. 18 The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom. (R)To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Final Greetings

19 Greet (S)Prisca and Aquila, and (T)the household of Onesiphorus. 20 Erastus remained at Corinth, and I left (U)Trophimus, who was ill, at Miletus. 21 (V)Do your best to come before winter. Eubulus sends greetings to you, as do Pudens and Linus and Claudia and all the brothers.[b]

22 The Lord be (W)with your spirit. (X)Grace be with you.[c]
