The Death of Moses

34 Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab (A)to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is opposite Jericho. And the Lord showed him all the land, Gilead as far as Dan, all Naphtali, the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah (B)as far as the western sea, (C)the Negeb, and (D)the Plain, that is, the Valley of Jericho (E)the city of palm trees, as far as (F)Zoar. And the Lord said to him, (G)“This is the land of which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, ‘I will give it to your offspring.’ (H)I have let you see it with your eyes, but (I)you shall not go over there.” So Moses the servant of the Lord died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the Lord, and he buried him in the valley in the land of Moab opposite Beth-peor; but (J)no one knows the place of his burial to this day. (K)Moses was 120 years old when he died. (L)His eye was undimmed, and his vigor unabated. And the people of Israel (M)wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days. Then the days of weeping and mourning for Moses were ended.

And Joshua the son of Nun was full of (N)the spirit of wisdom, for (O)Moses had laid his hands on him. So (P)the people of Israel obeyed him and did as the Lord had commanded Moses. 10 And there has not (Q)arisen a prophet since in Israel like Moses, (R)whom the Lord knew face to face, 11 none like him for all (S)the signs and the wonders that the Lord sent him to do in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to all his land, 12 and for all the mighty power and all the great deeds of terror that Moses did in the sight of all Israel.

The Death of Moses

34 Then Moses climbed Mount Nebo(A) from the plains of Moab to the top of Pisgah,(B) across from Jericho.(C) There the Lord showed(D) him the whole land—from Gilead to Dan,(E) all of Naphtali, the territory of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the Mediterranean Sea,(F) the Negev(G) and the whole region from the Valley of Jericho, the City of Palms,(H) as far as Zoar.(I) Then the Lord said to him, “This is the land I promised on oath(J) to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob(K) when I said, ‘I will give it(L) to your descendants.’ I have let you see it with your eyes, but you will not cross(M) over into it.”

And Moses the servant of the Lord(N) died(O) there in Moab, as the Lord had said. He buried him[a] in Moab, in the valley opposite Beth Peor,(P) but to this day no one knows where his grave is.(Q) Moses was a hundred and twenty years old(R) when he died, yet his eyes were not weak(S) nor his strength gone.(T) The Israelites grieved for Moses in the plains of Moab(U) thirty days,(V) until the time of weeping and mourning(W) was over.

Now Joshua son of Nun was filled with the spirit[b] of wisdom(X) because Moses had laid his hands on him.(Y) So the Israelites listened to him and did what the Lord had commanded Moses.

10 Since then, no prophet(Z) has risen in Israel like Moses,(AA) whom the Lord knew face to face,(AB) 11 who did all those signs and wonders(AC) the Lord sent him to do in Egypt—to Pharaoh and to all his officials(AD) and to his whole land. 12 For no one has(AE) ever shown the mighty power or performed the awesome deeds(AF) that Moses did in the sight of all Israel.

  2. Deuteronomy 34:9 Or Spirit

18 But the Jews who were in Susa gathered (A)on the thirteenth day and on the fourteenth, and rested (B)on the fifteenth day, making that a day of feasting and gladness. 19 Therefore the Jews of the villages, who live in (C)the rural towns, hold the fourteenth day of the month of Adar as a day for gladness and feasting, as (D)a holiday, and (E)as a day on which they send gifts of food to one another.

The Feast of Purim Inaugurated

20 And Mordecai recorded these things and sent letters to all the Jews who were in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus, both near and far, 21 obliging them to keep the fourteenth day of the month Adar and also the fifteenth day of the same, year by year, 22 as the days on which the Jews got relief from their enemies, and as the month that had been turned for them from sorrow into gladness and from mourning into (F)a holiday; that they should make them days of feasting and gladness, days for sending gifts of food to one another and gifts to the poor.

23 So the Jews accepted what they had started to do, and what Mordecai had written to them. 24 For Haman the Agagite, the son of Hammedatha, (G)the enemy of all the Jews, (H)had plotted against the Jews to destroy them, and (I)had cast Pur (that is, cast lots), to crush and to destroy them. 25 But when it came before the king, he gave orders in writing (J)that his evil plan that he had devised against the Jews (K)should return on his own head, and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows. 26 Therefore they called these days Purim, after the term (L)Pur. Therefore, because of all that was written in (M)this letter, and of what they had faced in this matter, and of what had happened to them, 27 the Jews firmly obligated themselves and their offspring and (N)all who joined them, that without fail they would keep (O)these two days according to what was written and at the time appointed every year, 28 that these days should be remembered and kept throughout every generation, in every clan, province, and city, and that these days of Purim should never fall into disuse among the Jews, nor should the commemoration of these days cease among their descendants.

29 Then Queen Esther, (P)the daughter of Abihail, and Mordecai the Jew gave full written authority, confirming (Q)this second letter about Purim. 30 Letters were sent to all the Jews, (R)to the 127 provinces of the kingdom of Ahasuerus, in words of peace and truth, 31 that these days of Purim should be observed at their appointed seasons, as Mordecai the Jew and Queen Esther obligated them, and as they had obligated themselves and their offspring, with regard to (S)their fasts and their lamenting. 32 The command of Esther confirmed these practices of (T)Purim, and it was recorded in writing.

The Greatness of Mordecai

10 King Ahasuerus imposed tax on the land and on (U)the coastlands of the sea. And all the acts of his power and might, and the full account of the high honor of Mordecai, (V)to which the king advanced him, are they not written in (W)the Book of the Chronicles of the kings of Media and Persia? For Mordecai the Jew was (X)second in rank to King Ahasuerus, and he was great among the Jews and popular with the multitude of his brothers, for he (Y)sought the welfare of his people and spoke peace to all his people.

18 The Jews in Susa, however, had assembled on the thirteenth and fourteenth, and then on the fifteenth they rested and made it a day of feasting and joy.

19 That is why rural Jews—those living in villages—observe the fourteenth of the month of Adar(A) as a day of joy and feasting, a day for giving presents to each other.(B)

Purim Established

20 Mordecai recorded these events, and he sent letters to all the Jews throughout the provinces of King Xerxes, near and far, 21 to have them celebrate annually the fourteenth and fifteenth days of the month of Adar 22 as the time when the Jews got relief(C) from their enemies, and as the month when their sorrow was turned into joy and their mourning into a day of celebration.(D) He wrote them to observe the days as days of feasting and joy and giving presents of food(E) to one another and gifts to the poor.(F)

23 So the Jews agreed to continue the celebration they had begun, doing what Mordecai had written to them. 24 For Haman son of Hammedatha, the Agagite,(G) the enemy of all the Jews, had plotted against the Jews to destroy them and had cast the pur(H) (that is, the lot(I)) for their ruin and destruction.(J) 25 But when the plot came to the king’s attention,[a] he issued written orders that the evil scheme Haman had devised against the Jews should come back onto his own head,(K) and that he and his sons should be impaled(L) on poles.(M) 26 (Therefore these days were called Purim, from the word pur.(N)) Because of everything written in this letter and because of what they had seen and what had happened to them, 27 the Jews took it on themselves to establish the custom that they and their descendants and all who join them should without fail observe these two days every year, in the way prescribed and at the time appointed. 28 These days should be remembered and observed in every generation by every family, and in every province and in every city. And these days of Purim should never fail to be celebrated by the Jews—nor should the memory of these days die out among their descendants.

29 So Queen Esther, daughter of Abihail,(O) along with Mordecai the Jew, wrote with full authority to confirm this second letter concerning Purim. 30 And Mordecai sent letters to all the Jews in the 127 provinces(P) of Xerxes’ kingdom—words of goodwill and assurance— 31 to establish these days of Purim at their designated times, as Mordecai the Jew and Queen Esther had decreed for them, and as they had established for themselves and their descendants in regard to their times of fasting(Q) and lamentation.(R) 32 Esther’s decree confirmed these regulations about Purim, and it was written down in the records.

The Greatness of Mordecai

10 King Xerxes imposed tribute throughout the empire, to its distant shores.(S) And all his acts of power and might, together with a full account of the greatness of Mordecai,(T) whom the king had promoted,(U) are they not written in the book of the annals(V) of the kings of Media and Persia? Mordecai the Jew was second(W) in rank(X) to King Xerxes,(Y) preeminent among the Jews, and held in high esteem by his many fellow Jews, because he worked for the good of his people and spoke up for the welfare of all the Jews.(Z)

Footnotes

  1. Esther 9:25 Or when Esther came before the king

Will man rob God? Yet you are robbing me. (A)But you say, ‘How have we robbed you?’ (B)In your tithes and contributions. (C)You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing me, the whole nation of you. 10 (D)Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby (E)put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open (F)the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need. 11 I will rebuke (G)the devourer[a] for you, so that it will not destroy the fruits of your soil, and your vine in the field shall not fail to bear, says the Lord of hosts. 12 Then (H)all nations will call you blessed, for you will be (I)a land of delight, says the Lord of hosts.

13 (J)“Your words have been hard against me, says the Lord. (K)But you say, ‘How have we spoken against you?’ 14 You have said, (L)‘It is vain to serve God. (M)What is the profit of our keeping his charge or of walking as in mourning before the Lord of hosts? 15 And now we call (N)the arrogant blessed. (O)Evildoers not only prosper but (P)they put God to the test and they escape.’”

The Book of Remembrance

16 Then those who feared the Lord (Q)spoke with one another. The Lord paid attention and heard them, and (R)a book of remembrance was written before him of those who feared the Lord and esteemed his name. 17 “They shall be mine, says the Lord of hosts, (S)in the day when I make up (T)my treasured possession, and I will spare them as a man spares his son who serves him. 18 Then once more you shall (U)see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between one who serves God and one who does not serve him.

The Great Day of the Lord

[b] “For behold, (V)the day is coming, (W)burning like an oven, when (X)all the arrogant and (Y)all evildoers (Z)will be stubble. The day that is coming (AA)shall set them ablaze, says the Lord of hosts, so that it will leave them neither root nor branch. But for you (AB)who fear my name, (AC)the sun (AD)of righteousness shall rise (AE)with healing in its wings. You shall go out (AF)leaping like calves from the stall. And you shall tread down the wicked, for they will be ashes under the soles of your feet, (AG)on the day when I act, says the Lord of hosts.

(AH)“Remember (AI)the law of my servant Moses, the statutes and rules[c] that I commanded him at Horeb for all Israel.

(AJ)“Behold, I will send you (AK)Elijah the prophet (AL)before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes. And he will (AM)turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and (AN)strike the land with a decree of utter destruction.”[d]

“Will a mere mortal rob(A) God? Yet you rob me.

“But you ask, ‘How are we robbing you?’

“In tithes(B) and offerings. You are under a curse(C)—your whole nation—because you are robbing me. 10 Bring the whole tithe(D) into the storehouse,(E) that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates(F) of heaven and pour out(G) so much blessing(H) that there will not be room enough to store it.(I) 11 I will prevent pests from devouring(J) your crops, and the vines in your fields will not drop their fruit before it is ripe,(K)” says the Lord Almighty. 12 “Then all the nations will call you blessed,(L) for yours will be a delightful land,”(M) says the Lord Almighty.(N)

Israel Speaks Arrogantly Against God

13 “You have spoken arrogantly(O) against me,” says the Lord.

“Yet you ask,(P) ‘What have we said against you?’

14 “You have said, ‘It is futile(Q) to serve(R) God. What do we gain by carrying out his requirements(S) and going about like mourners(T) before the Lord Almighty? 15 But now we call the arrogant(U) blessed. Certainly evildoers(V) prosper,(W) and even when they put God to the test, they get away with it.’”

The Faithful Remnant

16 Then those who feared the Lord talked with each other, and the Lord listened and heard.(X) A scroll(Y) of remembrance was written in his presence concerning those who feared(Z) the Lord and honored his name.

17 “On the day when I act,” says the Lord Almighty, “they will be my(AA) treasured possession.(AB) I will spare(AC) them, just as a father has compassion and spares his son(AD) who serves him. 18 And you will again see the distinction between the righteous(AE) and the wicked, between those who serve God and those who do not.(AF)

Judgment and Covenant Renewal

[a]“Surely the day is coming;(AG) it will burn like a furnace.(AH) All the arrogant(AI) and every evildoer will be stubble,(AJ) and the day that is coming will set them on fire,(AK)” says the Lord Almighty. “Not a root or a branch(AL) will be left to them. But for you who revere my name,(AM) the sun of righteousness(AN) will rise with healing(AO) in its rays. And you will go out and frolic(AP) like well-fed calves. Then you will trample(AQ) on the wicked; they will be ashes(AR) under the soles of your feet on the day when I act,” says the Lord Almighty.

“Remember the law(AS) of my servant Moses, the decrees and laws I gave him at Horeb(AT) for all Israel.(AU)

“See, I will send the prophet Elijah(AV) to you before that great and dreadful day of the Lord comes.(AW) He will turn the hearts of the parents to their children,(AX) and the hearts of the children to their parents; or else I will come and strike(AY) the land with total destruction.”(AZ)

Longing for Her Beloved

Oh that you were like a brother to me
    who nursed at my mother's breasts!
If I found you outside, I would kiss you,
    and none would despise me.
I would lead you and (A)bring you
    into the house of my mother—
    she who used to teach me.
I would give you (B)spiced wine to drink,
    the juice of my pomegranate.
(C)His left hand is under my head,
    and his right hand embraces me!
I (D)adjure you, O (E)daughters of Jerusalem,
    (F)that you not stir up or awaken love
    until it pleases.

(G)Who is that coming up from the wilderness,
    leaning on her beloved?

Under the apple tree I awakened you.
There your mother was in labor with you;
    there she who bore you was in labor.

Set me as a seal upon your heart,
    as (H)a seal upon your arm,
for (I)love is strong as death,
    (J)jealousy[a] is fierce as the grave.[b]
Its flashes are flashes of fire,
    the very (K)flame of the Lord.
Many waters cannot quench love,
    neither can floods drown it.
If a man offered for love
    all the wealth of his (L)house,
    he[c] would be utterly despised.

Final Advice

Others

We have a little sister,
    and she (M)has no breasts.
What shall we do for our sister
    on the day when she is spoken for?
If she is a wall,
    we will build on her a battlement of silver,
but if she is a door,
    we will enclose her with (N)boards of cedar.

She

10 (O)I was a wall,
    and my (P)breasts were like towers;
then I was in his eyes
    as one who finds[d] peace.

11 Solomon had (Q)a vineyard at Baal-hamon;
    he (R)let out the vineyard to (S)keepers;
    each one was to bring for its fruit (T)a thousand pieces of silver.
12 My vineyard, my very own, is before me;
    you, O Solomon, may have the thousand,
    and (U)the keepers of the fruit two hundred.

He

13 (V)O you who dwell in the gardens,
    with (W)companions listening for your voice;
    (X)let me hear it.

She

14 (Y)Make haste, my beloved,
    and be (Z)like a gazelle
or a young stag
    on (AA)the mountains of spices.

Friends

Who is this coming up from the wilderness(D)
    leaning on her beloved?

She

Under the apple tree I roused you;
    there your mother conceived(E) you,
    there she who was in labor gave you birth.
Place me like a seal over your heart,
    like a seal on your arm;
for love(F) is as strong as death,
    its jealousy[a](G) unyielding as the grave.
It burns like blazing fire,
    like a mighty flame.[b]

Jesus and Peter

15 When they had (A)finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, (B)“Simon, (C)son of John, (D)do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed (E)my lambs.” 16 He said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, (F)“Tend (G)my sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him (H)the third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, (I)you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed (J)my sheep. 18 (K)Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, (L)you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.” 19 (This he said to show (M)by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, (N)“Follow me.”

Jesus and the Beloved Apostle

20 Peter turned and saw (O)the disciple whom Jesus loved following them, (P)the one who also had leaned back against him during the supper and had said, “Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?” 21 When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, “Lord, what about this man?” 22 Jesus said to him, “If it is my will that he remain (Q)until (R)I come, what is that to you? (S)You follow me!” 23 So the saying spread abroad among (T)the brothers[a] that this disciple was not to die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he was not to die, but, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?”

24 This is the disciple (U)who is bearing witness about these things, and who has written these things, and (V)we know (W)that his testimony is true.

25 Now (X)there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that (Y)the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.

Jesus Reinstates Peter

15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”

“Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.”(A)

Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”(B)

16 Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.”(C)

17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?”(D) He said, “Lord, you know all things;(E) you know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.(F) 18 Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” 19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death(G) by which Peter would glorify God.(H) Then he said to him, “Follow me!”(I)

20 Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved(J) was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is going to betray you?”)(K) 21 When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?”

22 Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return,(L) what is that to you? You must follow me.”(M) 23 Because of this, the rumor spread among the believers(N) that this disciple would not die. But Jesus did not say that he would not die; he only said, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?”

24 This is the disciple who testifies to these things(O) and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true.(P)

25 Jesus did many other things as well.(Q) If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.
