A Vision of Joshua the High Priest

Then he showed me (A)Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and (B)Satan[a] standing at his right hand to accuse him. And the Lord said to Satan, (C)“The Lord rebuke you, O Satan! The Lord who has (D)chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is not this (E)a brand[b] plucked from the fire?” Now (F)Joshua was standing before the angel, (G)clothed with filthy garments. And the angel said to (H)those who were standing before him, (I)“Remove the filthy garments from him.” And to him he said, “Behold, (J)I have taken your iniquity away from you, and (K)I will clothe you with pure vestments.” And I said, (L)“Let them put a clean turban on his head.” So they put a clean turban on his head and clothed him with garments. And the angel of the Lord was standing by.

And the angel of the Lord solemnly assured (M)Joshua, “Thus says the Lord of hosts: If you will walk in my ways and (N)keep my charge, then you shall (O)rule my house and have charge of my courts, and I will give you the right of access among (P)those who are standing here. Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, you and your friends who sit before you, for (Q)they are men who are a sign: behold, I will bring (R)my servant (S)the Branch. For behold, on (T)the stone that I have set before Joshua, on a single stone with (U)seven eyes,[c] I will (V)engrave its inscription, declares the Lord of hosts, and (W)I will remove the iniquity of this land in a single day. 10 In that day, declares the Lord of hosts, every one of you will invite his neighbor to come (X)under his vine and under his fig tree.”

Clean Garments for the High Priest

Then he showed me Joshua(A) the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan[a](B) standing at his right side to accuse him. The Lord said to Satan, “The Lord rebuke you,(C) Satan! The Lord, who has chosen(D) Jerusalem, rebuke you! Is not this man a burning stick(E) snatched from the fire?”(F)

Now Joshua was dressed in filthy clothes as he stood before the angel. The angel said to those who were standing before him, “Take off his filthy clothes.”

Then he said to Joshua, “See, I have taken away your sin,(G) and I will put fine garments(H) on you.”

Then I said, “Put a clean turban(I) on his head.” So they put a clean turban on his head and clothed him, while the angel of the Lord stood by.

The angel of the Lord gave this charge to Joshua: “This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘If you will walk in obedience to me and keep my requirements,(J) then you will govern my house(K) and have charge(L) of my courts, and I will give you a place among these standing here.(M)

“‘Listen, High Priest(N) Joshua, you and your associates seated before you, who are men symbolic(O) of things to come: I am going to bring my servant, the Branch.(P) See, the stone I have set in front of Joshua!(Q) There are seven eyes[b](R) on that one stone,(S) and I will engrave an inscription on it,’ says the Lord Almighty, ‘and I will remove the sin(T) of this land in a single day.

10 “‘In that day each of you will invite your neighbor to sit(U) under your vine and fig tree,(V)’ declares the Lord Almighty.”

15 In my (A)vain[a] life I have seen everything. There is (B)a righteous man who perishes in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man who (C)prolongs his life in his evildoing. 16 Be not overly righteous, and do not (D)make yourself too wise. Why should you destroy yourself? 17 Be not overly wicked, neither be a fool. (E)Why should you die before your time? 18 It is good that you should take hold of (F)this, and from (G)that (H)withhold not your hand, for the one who fears God shall come out from both of them.

19 (I)Wisdom gives strength to the wise man more than ten rulers who are in a city.

20 Surely (J)there is not a righteous man on earth who does good and never sins.

21 Do not take to heart all the things that people say, lest you hear (K)your servant cursing you. 22 Your heart knows that (L)many times you yourself have cursed others.

23 All this I have tested by wisdom. (M)I said, “I will be wise,” but it was far from me. 24 That which has been is far off, and (N)deep, very deep; (O)who can find it out?

25 (P)I turned my heart to know and to search out and to seek wisdom and the scheme of things, and to know the wickedness of folly and the foolishness that is madness. 26 And I find something more (Q)bitter than death: (R)the woman whose heart is (S)snares and nets, and whose hands are fetters. He who pleases God escapes her, but (T)the sinner is taken by her. 27 Behold, this is what I found, says (U)the Preacher, while adding one thing to another to find the scheme of things— 28 which my soul has sought repeatedly, but I have not found. (V)One man among a thousand I found, but (W)a woman among all these I have not found. 29 See, this alone I found, that (X)God made man upright, but (Y)they have sought out many schemes.

15 In this meaningless life(A) of mine I have seen both of these:

the righteous perishing in their righteousness,
and the wicked living long in their wickedness.(B)
16 Do not be overrighteous,
    neither be overwise—
    why destroy yourself?
17 Do not be overwicked,
and do not be a fool—
    why die before your time?(C)
18 It is good to grasp the one
and not let go of the other.
Whoever fears God(D) will avoid all extremes.[a]

19 Wisdom(E) makes one wise person more powerful(F)
than ten rulers in a city.

20 Indeed, there is no one on earth who is righteous,(G)
no one who does what is right and never sins.(H)

21 Do not pay attention to every word people say,
or you(I) may hear your servant cursing you—
22 for you know in your heart
that many times you yourself have cursed others.

23 All this I tested by wisdom and I said,

“I am determined to be wise”(J)
    but this was beyond me.
24 Whatever exists is far off and most profound—
    who can discover it?(K)
25 So I turned my mind to understand,
to investigate and to search out wisdom and the scheme of things(L)
and to understand the stupidity of wickedness
    and the madness of folly.(M)

26 I find more bitter than death
the woman who is a snare,(N)
whose heart is a trap
    and whose hands are chains.
The man who pleases God will escape her,
but the sinner she will ensnare.(O)

27 “Look,” says the Teacher,[b](P) “this is what I have discovered:

“Adding one thing to another to discover the scheme of things—
28     while I was still searching
    but not finding—
I found one upright man among a thousand,
but not one upright woman(Q) among them all.
29 This only have I found:
    God created mankind upright,
but they have gone in search of many schemes.”

I Have Overcome the World

25 “I have said these things to you in figures of speech. (A)The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; 27 (B)for the Father himself loves you, because (C)you have loved me and (D)have believed that I came from God.[a] 28 (E)I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now (F)I am leaving the world and going to the Father.”

29 His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not (G)using figurative speech! 30 Now we know that (H)you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that (I)you came from God.” 31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32 Behold, (J)the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when (K)you will be scattered, each to his own home, and (L)will leave me alone. (M)Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. 33 I have said these things to you, that (N)in me you may have peace. (O)In the world you will have (P)tribulation. But (Q)take heart; (R)I have overcome the world.”
