The Defeat of King Sihon

26 “So I sent messengers from the wilderness of (A)Kedemoth to Sihon the king of (B)Heshbon, (C)with words of peace, saying, 27 (D)‘Let me pass through your land. I will go only by the road; I will turn aside neither to the right nor to the left. 28 (E)You shall sell me food for money, that I may eat, and give me water for money, that I may drink. Only let me pass through on foot, 29 (F)as the sons of Esau who live in Seir and the Moabites who live in Ar did for me, until I go over the Jordan into the land that the Lord our God is giving to us.’ 30 But (G)Sihon the king of (H)Heshbon would not let us pass by him, for the Lord your God (I)hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, that he might give him into your hand, as he is this day. 31 And the Lord said to me, ‘Behold, I have begun to give Sihon and his land over to you. Begin to take possession, that you may occupy his land.’ 32 Then (J)Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Jahaz. 33 And (K)the Lord our God gave him over to us, and (L)we defeated him and his sons and all his people. 34 And we captured all his cities at that time and devoted to destruction[a] every (M)city, men, women, and children. We left no survivors. 35 Only the livestock we took as spoil for ourselves, with the plunder of the cities that we captured. 36 (N)From Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and from (O)the city that is in the valley, as far as Gilead, there was not a city too high for us. Hezekiah Restores Temple Worship

20 Then Hezekiah the king rose early and gathered the officials of the city and went up to the house of the Lord. 21 And they brought seven bulls, seven rams, seven lambs, and seven male goats (A)for a sin offering for the kingdom and for the sanctuary and for Judah. And he commanded the priests, the sons of Aaron, to offer them on the altar of the Lord. 22 So they slaughtered the bulls, and the priests received the blood (B)and threw it against the altar. And they slaughtered the rams, and their blood was thrown against the altar. And they slaughtered the lambs, and their blood was thrown against the altar. 23 Then the goats for the sin offering were brought to the king and the assembly, (C)and they laid their hands on them, 24 and the priests slaughtered them and made a sin offering with their blood on the altar, (D)to make atonement for all Israel. For the king commanded that the burnt offering and the sin offering should be made for all Israel.

Come near; bring sacrifices and thank offerings to the house of the Lord.” And the assembly brought sacrifices and thank offerings, and all who were (N)of a willing heart brought burnt offerings. 32 The number of the burnt offerings that the assembly brought was 70 bulls, 100 rams, and 200 lambs; all these were for a burnt offering to the Lord. 33 And the consecrated offerings were 600 bulls and 3,000 sheep. 34 But the priests were too few and could not flay all the burnt offerings, so until other priests had consecrated themselves, (O)their brothers the Levites helped them, until the work was finished—(P)for the Levites were more upright in heart than the priests in consecrating themselves. 35 Besides the great number of burnt offerings, there was (Q)the fat of the peace offerings, and there were (R)the drink offerings for the burnt offerings. All this continued until the sacrifice of the burnt offering(M) was completed.

29 When the offerings were finished, the king and everyone present with him knelt down and worshiped.(N) 30 King Hezekiah and his officials ordered the Levites to praise the Lord with the words of David and of Asaph the seer. So they sang praises with gladness and bowed down and worshiped.

31 Then Hezekiah said, “You have now dedicated yourselves to the Lord. Come and bring sacrifices(O) and thank offerings to the temple of the Lord.” So the assembly brought sacrifices and thank offerings, and all whose hearts were willing(P) brought burnt offerings.

32 The number of burnt offerings(Q) the assembly brought was seventy bulls, a hundred rams and two hundred male lambs—all of them for burnt offerings to the Lord. 33 The animals consecrated as sacrifices amounted to six hundred bulls and three thousand sheep and goats. 34 The priests, however, were too few to skin all the burnt offerings;(R) so their relatives the Levites helped them until the task was finished and until other priests had been consecrated,(S) for the Levites had been more conscientious in consecrating themselves than the priests had been. 35 There were burnt offerings in abundance, together with the fat(T) of the fellowship offerings(U) and the drink offerings(V) that accompanied the burnt offerings.

So the service of the temple of the Lord was reestablished. 36 Hezekiah and all the people rejoiced at what God had brought about for his people, because it was done so quickly.(W)

The Day of the Lord

Officers Sent to Arrest Jesus

Rivers of Living Water

Division Among the People

Pray for All People

Instructions on Worship
