¹⁹^(A)“All the firstborn males that are born of your herd and flock you shall dedicate to the Lord your God. You shall do no work with the firstborn of your herd, nor shear the firstborn of your flock. ²⁰^(B)You shall eat it, you and your household, before the Lord your God year by year at the place that the Lord will choose. ²¹^(C)But if it has any blemish, if it is lame or blind or has any serious blemish whatever, you shall not sacrifice it to the Lord your God. ²²You shall eat it within your towns. ^(D)The unclean and the clean alike may eat it, as though it were a gazelle or a deer. ²³^(E)Only you shall not eat its blood; you shall pour it out on the ground like water.

Passover

16 “Observe the ^(F)month of Abib and keep the Passover to the Lord your God, for ^(G)in the month of Abib the Lord your God brought you out of Egypt by night. ²And you shall offer the Passover sacrifice to the Lord your God, from the flock or ^(H)the herd, ^(I)at the place that the Lord will choose, to make his name dwell there. ³You shall eat no leavened bread with it. ^(J)Seven days you shall eat it with unleavened bread, the bread of affliction—for you came out of the land of Egypt ^(K)in haste—that all the days of your life you may remember the day when you came out of the land of Egypt. ⁴^(L)No leaven shall be seen with you in all your territory for seven days, ^(M)nor shall any of the flesh that you sacrifice on the evening of the first day remain all night until morning. ⁵You may not offer the Passover sacrifice within any of your towns that the Lord your God is giving you, ⁶but at the place that the Lord your God will choose, to make his name dwell in it, there you shall offer the Passover sacrifice, in the evening at sunset, at the time you came out of Egypt. ⁷And you shall cook it and eat it at the place that the Lord your God will choose. And in the morning you shall turn and go to your tents. ⁸For ^(N)six days you shall eat unleavened bread, and on the seventh day there shall be ^(O)a solemn assembly to the Lord your God. You shall do no work on it.

The People Confess Their Sin

10 ^(A)While Ezra prayed and ^(B)made confession, weeping and ^(C)casting himself down ^(D)before the house of God, a very great assembly of men, women, and children, gathered to him out of Israel, for the people wept bitterly. ²And Shecaniah the son of Jehiel, of the sons of Elam, addressed Ezra: ^(E)“We have broken faith with our God and have married foreign women from the peoples of the land, but even now there is hope for Israel in spite of this. ³Therefore ^(F)let us make a covenant with our God to put away all these wives and ^(G)their children, according to the counsel of my lord^[a] and of ^(H)those who tremble at the commandment of our God, and let it be done ^(I)according to the Law. ⁴Arise, for it is your task, and we are with you; ^(J)be strong and do it.” ⁵Then Ezra arose and made the leading priests and Levites and all Israel ^(K)take an oath that they would do as had been said. So they took the oath.

Wait for the God of Salvation

7 Woe is me! For I have become
    ^(A)as when the summer fruit has been gathered,
    as when the grapes have been gleaned:
there is no cluster to eat,
    no ^(B)first-ripe fig that my soul desires.
²^(C)The godly has perished from the earth,
    and ^(D)there is no one upright among mankind;
^(E)they all lie in wait for blood,
    and ^(F)each hunts the other with a net.
³^(G)Their hands are on what is evil, to do it well;
    ^(H)the prince and ^(I)the judge ask for a bribe,
and the great man utters the evil desire of his soul;
    thus they weave it together.
⁴The best of them is ^(J)like a brier,
    the most upright of them a thorn hedge.
The day of ^(K)your watchmen, of your punishment, has come;
    ^(L)now their confusion is at hand.
⁵^(M)Put no trust in a neighbor;
    have no confidence in a friend;
guard ^(N)the doors of your mouth
    from her who lies in your arms;^[a]
⁶for ^(O)the son treats the father with contempt,
    the daughter rises up against her mother,
the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law;
    ^(P)a man's enemies are the men of his own house.
⁷But as for me, I will look to the Lord;
    ^(Q)I will wait for the God of my salvation;
    my God will hear me.

⁸^(R)Rejoice not over me, O ^(S)my enemy;
    ^(T)when I fall, I shall rise;
^(U)when I sit in darkness,
    the Lord will be a light to me.
⁹^(V)I will bear the indignation of the Lord
    because I have sinned against him,
until ^(W)he pleads my cause
    and executes judgment for me.
^(X)He will bring me out to the light;
    I shall look upon his vindication.
¹⁰Then ^(Y)my enemy will see,
    and shame will cover her who ^(Z)said to me,
    “Where is the Lord your God?”
^(AA)My eyes will look upon her;
    now she will be trampled down
    ^(AB)like the mire of the streets.

¹¹^(AC)A day for the building of your walls!
    In that day the boundary shall be far extended.
¹²In that day they^[b] will come to you,
    ^(AD)from Assyria and the cities of Egypt,
and from Egypt to ^(AE)the River,^[c]
    ^(AF)from sea to sea and from mountain to mountain.
¹³But ^(AG)the earth will be desolate
    because of its inhabitants,
    for the fruit of their deeds.

¹⁴^(AH)Shepherd your people ^(AI)with your staff,
    the flock of your inheritance,
who dwell alone in a forest
    ^(AJ)in the midst of ^(AK)a garden land;^[d]
let them graze in Bashan and Gilead
    as in the days of old.
¹⁵^(AL)As in the days when you came out of the land of Egypt,
    I will show them^[e] marvelous things.
¹⁶^(AM)The nations shall see and be ashamed of all their might;
^(AN)they shall lay their hands on their mouths;
    their ears shall be deaf;
¹⁷^(AO)they shall lick the dust like a serpent,
    like the crawling things of the earth;
^(AP)they shall come trembling out of their strongholds;
    ^(AQ)they shall turn in dread to the Lord our God,
    and they shall be in fear of you.

God's Steadfast Love and Compassion

¹⁸^(AR)Who is a God like you, ^(AS)pardoning iniquity
    and passing over transgression
    ^(AT)for the remnant of his inheritance?
^(AU)He does not retain his anger forever,
    because he delights in steadfast love.
¹⁹He will ^(AV)again have compassion on us;
    ^(AW)he will tread our iniquities underfoot.
^(AX)You will cast all our^[f] sins
    into the depths of the sea.
²⁰^(AY)You will show faithfulness to Jacob
    and steadfast love to Abraham,
^(AZ)as you have sworn to our fathers
    from the days of old.

¹²The next day ^(A)the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. ¹³So they took branches of ^(B)palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, ^(C)“Hosanna! Blessed is ^(D)he who comes in the name of the Lord, even ^(E)the King of Israel!” ¹⁴And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written,

¹⁵^(F)“Fear not, daughter of Zion;
behold, your king is coming,
sitting on a donkey's colt!”

¹⁶^(G)His disciples did not understand these things at first, but ^(H)when Jesus was glorified, then ^(I)they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him. ¹⁷^(J)The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness. ¹⁸The reason why the crowd went to meet him ^(K)was that they heard he had done this sign. ¹⁹So the Pharisees said to one another, ^(L)“You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, ^(M)the world has gone after him.”
