17 In majesty he is like a firstborn bull;
his horns(A) are the horns of a wild ox.(B)
With them he will gore(C) the nations,
even those at the ends of the earth.
Such are the ten thousands of Ephraim;(D)
such are the thousands of Manasseh.(E)

18 About Zebulun(F) he said:

“Rejoice, Zebulun, in your going out,
and you, Issachar,(G) in your tents.
19 They will summon peoples to the mountain(H)
and there offer the sacrifices of the righteous;(I)
they will feast on the abundance of the seas,(J)
on the treasures hidden in the sand.”

20 About Gad(K) he said:

“Blessed is he who enlarges Gad’s domain!(L)
Gad lives there like a lion,
    tearing at arm or head.
21 He chose the best land for himself;(M)
the leader’s portion was kept for him.(N)
When the heads of the people assembled,
he carried out the Lord’s righteous will,(O)
    and his judgments concerning Israel.”

22 About Dan(P) he said:

“Dan is a lion’s cub,
    springing out of Bashan.”

23 About Naphtali(Q) he said:

“Naphtali is abounding with the favor of the Lord
    and is full of his blessing;
he will inherit southward to the lake.”

24 About Asher(R) he said:

“Most blessed of sons is Asher;
let him be favored by his brothers,
and let him bathe his feet in oil.(S)
25 The bolts of your gates will be iron and bronze,(T)
and your strength will equal your days.(U)

26 “There is no one like the God of Jeshurun,(V)
who rides(W) across the heavens to help you(X)
and on the clouds(Y) in his majesty.(Z)
27 The eternal(AA) God is your refuge,(AB)
and underneath are the everlasting(AC) arms.
He will drive out your enemies before you,(AD)
    saying, ‘Destroy them!’(AE)
28 So Israel will live in safety;(AF)
    Jacob will dwell[a] secure
in a land of grain and new wine,
    where the heavens drop dew.(AG)
29 Blessed are you, Israel!(AH)
    Who is like you,(AI)
a people saved by the Lord?(AJ)
He is your shield and helper(AK)
    and your glorious sword.
Your enemies will cower before you,
and you will tread on their heights.(AL)

The Death of Moses

34 Then Moses climbed Mount Nebo(AM) from the plains of Moab to the top of Pisgah,(AN) across from Jericho.(AO) There the Lord showed(AP) him the whole land—from Gilead to Dan,(AQ) all of Naphtali, the territory of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the Mediterranean Sea,(AR) the Negev(AS) and the whole region from the Valley of Jericho, the City of Palms,(AT) as far as Zoar.(AU) Then the Lord said to him, “This is the land I promised on oath(AV) to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob(AW) when I said, ‘I will give it(AX) to your descendants.’ I have let you see it with your eyes, but you will not cross(AY) over into it.”

And Moses the servant of the Lord(AZ) died(BA) there in Moab, as the Lord had said. He buried him[b] in Moab, in the valley opposite Beth Peor,(BB) but to this day no one knows where his grave is.(BC) Moses was a hundred and twenty years old(BD) when he died, yet his eyes were not weak(BE) nor his strength gone.(BF) The Israelites grieved for Moses in the plains of Moab(BG) thirty days,(BH) until the time of weeping and mourning(BI) was over.

Now Joshua son of Nun was filled with the spirit[c] of wisdom(BJ) because Moses had laid his hands on him.(BK) So the Israelites listened to him and did what the Lord had commanded Moses.

10 Since then, no prophet(BL) has risen in Israel like Moses,(BM) whom the Lord knew face to face,(BN) 11 who did all those signs and wonders(BO) the Lord sent him to do in Egypt—to Pharaoh and to all his officials(BP) and to his whole land. 12 For no one has(BQ) ever shown the mighty power or performed the awesome deeds(BR) that Moses did in the sight of all Israel.

Joshua Installed as Leader

After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord,(BS) the Lord said to Joshua(BT) son of Nun, Moses’ aide: “Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River(BU) into the land(BV) I am about to give to them(BW)—to the Israelites. I will give you every place where you set your foot,(BX) as I promised Moses.(BY) Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon,(BZ) and from the great river, the Euphrates(CA)—all the Hittite(CB) country—to the Mediterranean Sea in the west.(CC) No one will be able to stand against you(CD) all the days of your life. As I was with(CE) Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake(CF) you. Be strong(CG) and courageous,(CH) because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestors(CI) to give them.

“Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey(CJ) all the law(CK) my servant Moses(CL) gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left,(CM) that you may be successful wherever you go.(CN) Keep this Book of the Law(CO) always on your lips;(CP) meditate(CQ) on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.(CR) Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid;(CS) do not be discouraged,(CT) for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”(CU)

10 So Joshua ordered the officers of the people:(CV) 11 “Go through the camp(CW) and tell the people, ‘Get your provisions(CX) ready. Three days(CY) from now you will cross the Jordan(CZ) here to go in and take possession(DA) of the land the Lord your God is giving you for your own.’”

12 But to the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh,(DB) Joshua said, 13 “Remember the command that Moses the servant of the Lord gave you after he said, ‘The Lord your God will give you rest(DC) by giving you this land.’ 14 Your wives,(DD) your children and your livestock may stay in the land(DE) that Moses gave you east of the Jordan, but all your fighting men, ready for battle,(DF) must cross over ahead of your fellow Israelites.(DG) You are to help them 15 until the Lord gives them rest, as he has done for you, and until they too have taken possession of the land the Lord your God is giving them. After that, you may go back and occupy your own land, which Moses the servant of the Lord gave you east of the Jordan toward the sunrise.”(DH)

16 Then they answered Joshua, “Whatever you have commanded us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go.(DI) 17 Just as we fully obeyed Moses, so we will obey you.(DJ) Only may the Lord your God be with you as he was with Moses. 18 Whoever rebels against your word and does not obey(DK) it, whatever you may command them, will be put to death. Only be strong and courageous!(DL)
