22 You also made the Lord angry(A) at Taberah,(B) at Massah(C) and at Kibroth Hattaavah.(D)

23 And when the Lord sent you out from Kadesh Barnea,(E) he said, “Go up and take possession(F) of the land I have given you.” But you rebelled(G) against the command of the Lord your God. You did not trust(H) him or obey him. 24 You have been rebellious against the Lord ever since I have known you.(I)

25 I lay prostrate before the Lord those forty days and forty nights(J) because the Lord had said he would destroy you.(K) 26 I prayed to the Lord and said, “Sovereign Lord, do not destroy your people,(L) your own inheritance(M) that you redeemed(N) by your great power and brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand.(O) 27 Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Overlook the stubbornness(P) of this people, their wickedness and their sin. 28 Otherwise, the country(Q) from which you brought us will say, ‘Because the Lord was not able to take them into the land he had promised them, and because he hated them,(R) he brought them out to put them to death in the wilderness.’(S) 29 But they are your people,(T) your inheritance(U) that you brought out by your great power and your outstretched arm.(V)

Tablets Like the First Ones

10 At that time the Lord said to me, “Chisel out two stone tablets(W) like the first ones and come up to me on the mountain. Also make a wooden ark.[a] I will write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke. Then you are to put them in the ark.”(X)

So I made the ark out of acacia wood(Y) and chiseled(Z) out two stone tablets like the first ones, and I went up on the mountain with the two tablets in my hands. The Lord wrote on these tablets what he had written before, the Ten Commandments(AA) he had proclaimed(AB) to you on the mountain, out of the fire, on the day of the assembly.(AC) And the Lord gave them to me. Then I came back down the mountain(AD) and put the tablets in the ark(AE) I had made,(AF) as the Lord commanded me, and they are there now.(AG)

(The Israelites traveled from the wells of Bene Jaakan to Moserah.(AH) There Aaron died(AI) and was buried, and Eleazar(AJ) his son succeeded him as priest.(AK) From there they traveled to Gudgodah and on to Jotbathah, a land with streams of water.(AL) At that time the Lord set apart the tribe of Levi(AM) to carry the ark of the covenant(AN) of the Lord, to stand before the Lord to minister(AO) and to pronounce blessings(AP) in his name, as they still do today.(AQ) That is why the Levites have no share or inheritance among their fellow Israelites; the Lord is their inheritance,(AR) as the Lord your God told them.)

10 Now I had stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights, as I did the first time, and the Lord listened to me at this time also. It was not his will to destroy you.(AS) 11 “Go,” the Lord said to me, “and lead the people on their way, so that they may enter and possess the land I swore to their ancestors to give them.”

Fear the Lord

12 And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you(AT) but to fear(AU) the Lord your God, to walk(AV) in obedience to him, to love him,(AW) to serve the Lord(AX) your God with all your heart(AY) and with all your soul,(AZ) 13 and to observe the Lord’s commands(BA) and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good?(BB)

14 To the Lord your God belong the heavens,(BC) even the highest heavens,(BD) the earth and everything in it.(BE) 15 Yet the Lord set his affection on your ancestors and loved(BF) them, and he chose you,(BG) their descendants, above all the nations—as it is today.(BH) 16 Circumcise(BI) your hearts,(BJ) therefore, and do not be stiff-necked(BK) any longer. 17 For the Lord your God is God of gods(BL) and Lord of lords,(BM) the great God, mighty and awesome,(BN) who shows no partiality(BO) and accepts no bribes.(BP) 18 He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow,(BQ) and loves the foreigner residing among you, giving them food and clothing.(BR) 19 And you are to love(BS) those who are foreigners,(BT) for you yourselves were foreigners in Egypt.(BU) 20 Fear the Lord your God and serve him.(BV) Hold fast(BW) to him and take your oaths in his name.(BX) 21 He is the one you praise;(BY) he is your God, who performed for you those great(BZ) and awesome wonders(CA) you saw with your own eyes. 22 Your ancestors who went down into Egypt were seventy in all,(CB) and now the Lord your God has made you as numerous as the stars in the sky.(CC)

The Faith of the Centurion(A)

When Jesus had finished saying all this(B) to the people who were listening, he entered Capernaum. There a centurion’s servant, whom his master valued highly, was sick and about to die. The centurion heard of Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and heal his servant. When they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, “This man deserves to have you do this, because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue.” So Jesus went with them.

He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him: “Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed.(C) For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”

When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, “I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.” 10 Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant well.
