The Lord’s Devastation of the Earth

24 See, the Lord is going to lay waste the earth(A)
    and devastate(B) it;
he will ruin its face
    and scatter(C) its inhabitants—
it will be the same
    for priest as for people,(D)
    for the master as for his servant,
    for the mistress as for her servant,
    for seller as for buyer,(E)
    for borrower as for lender,
    for debtor as for creditor.(F)
The earth will be completely laid waste(G)
    and totally plundered.(H)
The Lord has spoken(I) this word.

The earth dries up(J) and withers,(K)
    the world languishes and withers,
    the heavens(L) languish with the earth.(M)
The earth is defiled(N) by its people;
    they have disobeyed(O) the laws,
violated the statutes
    and broken the everlasting covenant.(P)
Therefore a curse(Q) consumes the earth;
    its people must bear their guilt.
Therefore earth’s inhabitants are burned up,(R)
    and very few are left.

I have commanded those I prepared for battle;
    I have summoned my warriors(A) to carry out my wrath(B)
    those who rejoice(C) in my triumph.

Listen, a noise on the mountains,
    like that of a great multitude!(D)
Listen, an uproar(E) among the kingdoms,
    like nations massing together!
The Lord Almighty(F) is mustering(G)
    an army for war.
They come from faraway lands,
    from the ends of the heavens(H)
the Lord and the weapons(I) of his wrath(J)
    to destroy(K) the whole country.

Wail,(L) for the day(M) of the Lord is near;
    it will come like destruction(N) from the Almighty.[a](O)
Because of this, all hands will go limp,(P)
    every heart will melt with fear.(Q)
Terror(R) will seize them,
    pain and anguish will grip(S) them;
    they will writhe like a woman in labor.(T)
They will look aghast at each other,
    their faces aflame.(U)

See, the day(V) of the Lord is coming
    —a cruel(W) day, with wrath(X) and fierce anger(Y)
to make the land desolate
    and destroy the sinners within it.
10 The stars of heaven and their constellations
    will not show their light.(Z)
The rising sun(AA) will be darkened(AB)
    and the moon will not give its light.(AC)
11 I will punish(AD) the world for its evil,
    the wicked(AE) for their sins.
I will put an end to the arrogance of the haughty(AF)
    and will humble(AG) the pride of the ruthless.(AH)
12 I will make people(AI) scarcer than pure gold,
    more rare than the gold of Ophir.(AJ)
13 Therefore I will make the heavens tremble;(AK)
    and the earth will shake(AL) from its place
at the wrath(AM) of the Lord Almighty,
    in the day of his burning anger.(AN)
