The Seventy “Sevens”

20 While I was speaking and praying, confessing(A) my sin and the sin of my people Israel and making my request to the Lord my God for his holy hill(B) 21 while I was still in prayer, Gabriel,(C) the man I had seen in the earlier vision, came to me in swift flight about the time of the evening sacrifice.(D) 22 He instructed me and said to me, “Daniel, I have now come to give you insight and understanding.(E) 23 As soon as you began to pray,(F) a word went out, which I have come to tell you, for you are highly esteemed.(G) Therefore, consider the word and understand the vision:(H)

24 “Seventy ‘sevens’[a] are decreed for your people and your holy city(I) to finish[b] transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone(J) for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness,(K) to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the Most Holy Place.[c]

25 “Know and understand this: From the time the word goes out to restore and rebuild(L) Jerusalem until the Anointed One,[d](M) the ruler,(N) comes, there will be seven ‘sevens,’ and sixty-two ‘sevens.’ It will be rebuilt with streets and a trench, but in times of trouble.(O) 26 After the sixty-two ‘sevens,’ the Anointed One will be put to death(P) and will have nothing.[e] The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood:(Q) War will continue until the end, and desolations(R) have been decreed.(S) 27 He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’[f] In the middle of the ‘seven’[g] he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And at the temple[h] he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed(T) is poured out on him.[i][j]

The Seventy-Weeks Prophecy

20 Now while I was speaking, praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the Lord my God for the holy mountain of my God, 21 yes, while I was speaking in prayer, the man (A)Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, [a]being caused to fly swiftly, reached me about the time of the evening offering. 22 And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, “O Daniel, I have now come forth to give you skill to understand. 23 At the beginning of your supplications the [b]command went out, and I have come to tell you, for you are greatly (B)beloved; therefore (C)consider the matter, and understand the vision:

24 “Seventy [c]weeks are determined
For your people and for your holy city,
To finish the transgression,
[d]To make an end of sins,
(D)To make reconciliation for iniquity,
(E)To bring in everlasting righteousness,
To seal up vision and prophecy,
(F)And to anoint [e]the Most Holy.

25 “Know therefore and understand,
That from the going forth of the command
To restore and build Jerusalem
Until (G)Messiah (H)the Prince,
There shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks;
The [f]street shall be built again, and the [g]wall,
Even in troublesome times.

26 “And after the sixty-two weeks
(I)Messiah shall [h]be cut off, (J)but not for Himself;
And (K)the people of the prince who is to come
(L)Shall destroy the city and the sanctuary.
The end of it shall be with a flood,
And till the end of the war desolations are determined.
27 Then he shall confirm (M)a [i]covenant with (N)many for one week;
But in the middle of the week
He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering.
And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate,
(O)Even until the consummation, which is determined,
Is poured out on the [j]desolate.”

Gabriel Brings an Answer

20 (A)While I was speaking and praying, confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my plea before the Lord my God for (B)the holy hill of my God, 21 while I was speaking in prayer, the man (C)Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the first, (D)came to me in swift flight at (E)the time of the evening sacrifice. 22 (F)He made me understand, speaking with me and saying, “O Daniel, I have now come out to give you (G)insight and understanding. 23 (H)At the beginning of your pleas for mercy a word went out, (I)and I have come to tell it to you, for (J)you are greatly loved. Therefore consider the word (K)and understand the vision.

The Seventy Weeks

24 (L)“Seventy weeks[a] are decreed about your people and (M)your holy city, to finish (N)the transgression, to put an end to sin, (O)and to atone for iniquity, (P)to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal both vision and prophet, and (Q)to anoint a most holy place.[b] 25 (R)Know therefore and understand that (S)from the going out of the word to restore and (T)build Jerusalem to the coming of an (U)anointed one, a (V)prince, there shall be seven weeks. Then for sixty-two weeks it shall be built again[c] with squares and moat, (W)but in a troubled time. 26 And after the sixty-two weeks, an anointed one shall (X)be cut off and shall have nothing. And the people of the prince who is to come (Y)shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. (Z)Its[d] end shall come with a flood, (AA)and to the end there shall be war. (AB)Desolations are decreed. 27 And he shall make a strong covenant with many for one week,[e] and for half of the week he shall put an end to sacrifice and offering. Gabriel’s Message about the Anointed One

20 I went on praying and confessing my sin and the sin of my people, pleading with the Lord my God for Jerusalem, his holy mountain. 21 As I was praying, Gabriel, whom I had seen in the earlier vision, came swiftly to me at the time of the evening sacrifice. 22 He explained to me, “Daniel, I have come here to give you insight and understanding. 23 The moment you began praying, a command was given. And now I am here to tell you what it was, for you are very precious to God. Listen carefully so that you can understand the meaning of your vision.

24 “A period of seventy sets of seven[a] has been decreed for your people and your holy city to finish their rebellion, to put an end to their sin, to atone for their guilt, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to confirm the prophetic vision, and to anoint the Most Holy Place.[b] 25 Now listen and understand! Seven sets of seven plus sixty-two sets of seven[c] will pass from the time the command is given to rebuild Jerusalem until a ruler—the Anointed One[d]—comes. Jerusalem will be rebuilt with streets and strong defenses,[e] despite the perilous times.

26 “After this period of sixty-two sets of seven,[f] the Anointed One will be killed, appearing to have accomplished nothing, and a ruler will arise whose armies will destroy the city and the Temple. The end will come with a flood, and war and its miseries are decreed from that time to the very end. 27 The ruler will make a treaty with the people for a period of one set of seven,[g] but after half this time, he will put an end to the sacrifices and offerings. And as a climax to all his terrible deeds,[h] he will set up a sacrilegious object that causes desecration,[i] until the fate decreed for this defiler is finally poured out on him.”
