21 yes, while I was speaking in prayer, the man (A)Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, [a]being caused to fly swiftly, reached me about the time of the evening offering. 22 And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, “O Daniel, I have now come forth to give you skill to understand. 23 At the beginning of your supplications the [b]command went out, and I have come to tell you, for you are greatly (B)beloved; therefore (C)consider the matter, and understand the vision:

24 “Seventy [c]weeks are determined
For your people and for your holy city,
To finish the transgression,
[d]To make an end of sins,
(D)To make reconciliation for iniquity,
(E)To bring in everlasting righteousness,
To seal up vision and prophecy,
(F)And to anoint [e]the Most Holy.

25 “Know therefore and understand,
That from the going forth of the command
To restore and build Jerusalem
Until (G)Messiah (H)the Prince,
There shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks;
The [f]street shall be built again, and the [g]wall,
Even in troublesome times.

26 “And after the sixty-two weeks
(I)Messiah shall [h]be cut off, (J)but not for Himself;
And (K)the people of the prince who is to come
(L)Shall destroy the city and the sanctuary.
The end of it shall be with a flood,
And till the end of the war desolations are determined.
27 Then he shall confirm (M)a [i]covenant with (N)many for one week;
But in the middle of the week
He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering.
And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate,
(O)Even until the consummation, which is determined,
Is poured out on the [j]desolate.”

Vision of the Glorious Man

10 In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia a message was revealed to Daniel, whose (P)name was called Belteshazzar. The message was true, [k]but the appointed time was long; and he understood the message, and had understanding of the vision. In those days I, Daniel, was mourning three full weeks. I ate no [l]pleasant food, no meat or wine came into my mouth, nor did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled.

Now on the twenty-fourth day of the first month, as I was by the side of the great river, that is, the [m]Tigris, I lifted my eyes and looked, and behold, a certain man clothed in (Q)linen, whose waist was (R)girded with gold of Uphaz! His body was like beryl, his face like the appearance of lightning, his eyes like torches of fire, his arms and feet like burnished bronze in color, (S)and the sound of his words like the voice of a multitude.

And I, Daniel, alone saw the vision, for the men who were with me did not see the vision; but a great terror fell upon them, so that they fled to hide themselves. Therefore I was left alone when I saw this great vision, and no strength remained in me; for my [n]vigor was turned to [o]frailty in me, and I retained no strength. Yet I heard the sound of his words; and while I heard the sound of his words I was in a deep sleep on my face, with my face to the ground.

Prophecies Concerning Persia and Greece

10 (T)Suddenly, a hand touched me, which made me tremble on my knees and on the palms of my hands. 11 And he said to me, “O Daniel, (U)man greatly beloved, understand the words that I speak to you, and stand upright, for I have now been sent to you.” While he was speaking this word to me, I stood trembling.

12 Then he said to me, (V)“Do not fear, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your heart to understand, and to humble yourself before your God, (W)your words were heard; and I have come because of your words. 13 (X)But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me twenty-one days; and behold, (Y)Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, for I had been left alone there with the kings of Persia.

Daniel’s Vision of a Man

10 In the third year of Cyrus(S) king of Persia, a revelation was given to Daniel (who was called Belteshazzar).(T) Its message was true(U) and it concerned a great war.[k] The understanding of the message came to him in a vision.

At that time I, Daniel, mourned(V) for three weeks. I ate no choice food; no meat or wine touched my lips;(W) and I used no lotions at all until the three weeks were over.

On the twenty-fourth day of the first month, as I was standing on the bank(X) of the great river, the Tigris,(Y) I looked up(Z) and there before me was a man dressed in linen,(AA) with a belt of fine gold(AB) from Uphaz around his waist. His body was like topaz,(AC) his face like lightning,(AD) his eyes like flaming torches,(AE) his arms and legs like the gleam of burnished bronze,(AF) and his voice(AG) like the sound of a multitude.

I, Daniel, was the only one who saw the vision; those who were with me did not see it,(AH) but such terror overwhelmed them that they fled and hid themselves. So I was left alone,(AI) gazing at this great vision; I had no strength left,(AJ) my face turned deathly pale(AK) and I was helpless.(AL) Then I heard him speaking, and as I listened to him, I fell into a deep sleep, my face to the ground.(AM)

10 A hand touched me(AN) and set me trembling on my hands and knees.(AO) 11 He said, “Daniel, you who are highly esteemed,(AP) consider carefully the words I am about to speak to you, and stand up,(AQ) for I have now been sent to you.” And when he said this to me, I stood up trembling.

12 Then he continued, “Do not be afraid,(AR) Daniel. Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble(AS) yourself before your God, your words(AT) were heard, and I have come in response to them.(AU) 13 But the prince(AV) of the Persian kingdom resisted me twenty-one days. Then Michael,(AW) one of the chief princes, came to help me, because I was detained there with the king of Persia.
