¹⁴ Now when ^(A)the apostles at Jerusalem heard that ^(B)Samaria had received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John, ¹⁵ who came down and prayed for them ^(C)that they might receive the Holy Spirit, ¹⁶ for ^(D)he had not yet ^(E)fallen on any of them, but ^(F)they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. ¹⁷ Then ^(G)they laid their hands on them and ^(H)they received the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit Falls on the Gentiles

⁴⁴ While Peter was still saying these things, ^(A)the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word. ⁴⁵ And the believers from among ^(B)the circumcised who had come with Peter were amazed, because ^(C)the gift of the Holy Spirit ^(D)was poured out even on the Gentiles. ⁴⁶ For they were hearing them ^(E)speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter declared,

¹⁵ As I began to speak, ^(A)the Holy Spirit fell on them ^(B)just as on us at the beginning. ¹⁶ And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, ^(C)‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ ¹⁷ If then ^(D)God gave ^(E)the same gift to them as he gave to us ^(F)when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, ^(G)who was I ^(H)that I could stand in God's way?” ¹⁸ When they heard these things they fell silent. And they ^(I)glorified God, saying, ^(J)“Then to the Gentiles also God has ^(K)granted ^(L)repentance that leads to life.”

^6 (A)The ^(B)apostles and the elders were gathered together to consider this matter. ⁷ And after there had been much ^(C)debate, Peter stood up and said to them, “Brothers, you know that in the early days God made a choice among you, ^(D)that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear ^(E)the word of ^(F)the gospel and believe. ⁸ And God, ^(G)who knows the heart, ^(H)bore witness to them, ^(I)by giving them the Holy Spirit just as he did to us, ⁹ and ^(J)he made no distinction between us and them, ^(K)having cleansed their hearts ^(L)by faith. ¹⁰ Now, therefore, why ^(M)are you putting God to the test ^(N)by placing a yoke on the neck of the disciples ^(O)that neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear? ¹¹ But we ^(P)believe that we will be ^(Q)saved through ^(R)the grace of the Lord Jesus, ^(S)just as they will.”

Paul in Ephesus

19 And it happened that while ^(A)Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed ^(B)through the inland^[a] country and came to Ephesus. There he found some disciples. ² And he said to them, ^(C)“Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said, “No, ^(D)we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” ³ And he said, ^(E)“Into what then were you baptized?” They said, “Into ^(F)John's baptism.” ⁴ And Paul said, ^(G)“John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people ^(H)to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus.” ⁵ On hearing this, ^(I)they were baptized in^[b] the name of the Lord Jesus. ⁶ And ^(J)when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and ^(K)they began speaking in tongues and ^(L)prophesying. ⁷ There were about twelve men in all.
