15 who came down and prayed for them (A)that they would receive the Holy Spirit. 16 (For He had (B)not yet fallen upon any of them; they had simply been (C)baptized [a]in the name of the Lord Jesus.) 17 Then they (D)began laying their hands on them, and they were (E)receiving the Holy Spirit. 18 Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money, 19 saying, “Give this authority to me as well, so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.” 20 But Peter said to him, “May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could (F)acquire the gift of God with money! 21 You have (G)no part or share in this [b]matter, for your heart is not (H)right before God. 22 Therefore, repent of this wickedness of yours, and pray to the Lord that, (I)if possible, the intention of your heart will be forgiven you. 23 For I see that you are [c]in the gall of bitterness and in (J)the [d]bondage of unrighteousness.” 24 But Simon answered and said, “(K)Pray to the Lord for me yourselves, so that nothing of what you have said may come upon me.”

An Ethiopian Receives Christ

25 So, when they had solemnly (L)testified and spoken (M)the word of the Lord, they started back to Jerusalem, and were (N)preaching the gospel to many villages of the (O)Samaritans.

26 But (P)an angel of the Lord spoke to (Q)Philip, saying, “Get ready and go [e]south to the road that descends from Jerusalem to (R)Gaza.” ([f]This is a desert road.) 27 So he got ready and went; and [g](S)there was an Ethiopian eunuch, a court official of [h]Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of all her treasure; and he (T)had come to Jerusalem to worship, 28 and he was returning and sitting in his [i]chariot, and was reading Isaiah the prophet. 29 Then (U)the Spirit said to Philip, “Go up and join this [j]chariot.” 30 Philip ran up and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet, and said, “Do you understand what you are reading?” 31 And he said, “Well, how could I, unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. 32 Now the passage of Scripture which he was reading was this:

(V)He was led like a sheep to slaughter;
And like a lamb that is silent before its shearer,
So He does not open His mouth.
33 (W)In humiliation His justice was taken away;
Who will [k]describe His [l]generation?
For His life is taken away from the earth.”

34 The eunuch answered Philip and said, “Please tell me, of whom does the prophet say this? Of himself, or of someone else?” 35 Then Philip (X)opened his mouth, and (Y)beginning from this Scripture he (Z)preached Jesus to him. 36 As they went along the road they came to some water; and the eunuch *said, “Look! Water! (AA)What prevents me from being baptized?”[m] 38 And he ordered that the [n]chariot stop; and they both went down into the water, Philip as well as the eunuch, and he baptized him. 39 When they came up out of the water, (AB)the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away; and the eunuch no longer saw him, [o]but went on his way rejoicing. 40 But Philip [p]found himself at [q](AC)Azotus, and as he passed through he (AD)kept preaching the gospel to all the cities, until he came to (AE)Caesarea.

15 When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers there that they might receive the Holy Spirit,(A) 16 because the Holy Spirit had not yet come on any of them;(B) they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.(C) 17 Then Peter and John placed their hands on them,(D) and they received the Holy Spirit.(E)

18 When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money 19 and said, “Give me also this ability so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.”

20 Peter answered: “May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money!(F) 21 You have no part or share(G) in this ministry, because your heart is not right(H) before God. 22 Repent(I) of this wickedness and pray to the Lord in the hope that he may forgive you for having such a thought in your heart. 23 For I see that you are full of bitterness and captive to sin.”

24 Then Simon answered, “Pray to the Lord for me(J) so that nothing you have said may happen to me.”

25 After they had further proclaimed the word of the Lord(K) and testified about Jesus, Peter and John returned to Jerusalem, preaching the gospel in many Samaritan villages.(L)

Philip and the Ethiopian

26 Now an angel(M) of the Lord said to Philip,(N) “Go south to the road—the desert road—that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” 27 So he started out, and on his way he met an Ethiopian[a](O) eunuch,(P) an important official in charge of all the treasury of the Kandake (which means “queen of the Ethiopians”). This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship,(Q) 28 and on his way home was sitting in his chariot reading the Book of Isaiah the prophet. 29 The Spirit told(R) Philip, “Go to that chariot and stay near it.”

30 Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. “Do you understand what you are reading?” Philip asked.

31 “How can I,” he said, “unless someone explains it to me?” So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.

32 This is the passage of Scripture the eunuch was reading:

“He was led like a sheep to the slaughter,
    and as a lamb before its shearer is silent,
    so he did not open his mouth.
33 In his humiliation he was deprived of justice.
    Who can speak of his descendants?
    For his life was taken from the earth.”[b](S)

34 The eunuch asked Philip, “Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?” 35 Then Philip began(T) with that very passage of Scripture(U) and told him the good news(V) about Jesus.

36 As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water. What can stand in the way of my being baptized?”(W) [37] [c] 38 And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him. 39 When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away,(X) and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing. 40 Philip, however, appeared at Azotus and traveled about, preaching the gospel in all the towns(Y) until he reached Caesarea.(Z)

16 And I remembered the word of the Lord, how He used to say, (A)John baptized with water, but you will be baptized [a]with the Holy Spirit.’ 17 Therefore, if (B)God gave them the same gift as He also gave to us after believing in the Lord Jesus Christ, (C)who was I that I could [b]stand in God’s way?” 18 When they heard this, they [c]quieted down and (D)glorified God, saying, “Well then, God has also granted to the Gentiles the (E)repentance that leads to life.”

The Church in Antioch

19 (F)So then those who were scattered because of the [d]persecution that occurred in connection with Stephen made their way [e]to (G)Phoenicia, (H)Cyprus, and (I)Antioch, speaking the word to no one except to Jews alone. 20 But there were some of them, men of (J)Cyprus and (K)Cyrene, who came to (L)Antioch and began speaking to the [f](M)Greeks as well, (N)preaching the good news of the Lord Jesus. 21 And (O)the hand of the Lord was with them, and (P)a large number who believed turned to the Lord. 22 The [g]news about them [h]reached the ears of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent (Q)Barnabas off [i]to (R)Antioch. 23 Then when he arrived and [j]witnessed (S)the grace of God, he rejoiced and began to encourage them all with [k]resolute heart to remain true to the Lord; 24 for he was a good man, and (T)full of the Holy Spirit and faith. And [l](U)considerable numbers were added to the Lord. 25 And he left for (V)Tarsus to look for Saul; 26 and when he had found him, he brought him to (W)Antioch. And for an entire year they [m]met with the church and taught [n]considerable numbers of people; and (X)the disciples were first called (Y)Christians in (Z)Antioch.

27 Now [o]at this time some (AA)prophets came down from Jerusalem to (AB)Antioch. 28 One of them, named (AC)Agabus, stood up and [p]indicated [q]by the Spirit that there would definitely be a severe famine (AD)all over the [r]world. [s]And this took place in the reign of (AE)Claudius. 29 And to the extent that any of (AF)the disciples had means, each of them determined to send a contribution for the [t]relief of (AG)the brothers and sisters living in Judea. 30 (AH)And they did this, sending it [u]with (AI)Barnabas and Saul to the (AJ)elders.

16 Then I remembered what the Lord had said: ‘John baptized with[a] water,(A) but you will be baptized with[b] the Holy Spirit.’(B) 17 So if God gave them the same gift(C) he gave us(D) who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to think that I could stand in God’s way?”

18 When they heard this, they had no further objections and praised God, saying, “So then, even to Gentiles God has granted repentance that leads to life.”(E)

The Church in Antioch

19 Now those who had been scattered by the persecution that broke out when Stephen was killed(F) traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus and Antioch,(G) spreading the word only among Jews. 20 Some of them, however, men from Cyprus(H) and Cyrene,(I) went to Antioch(J) and began to speak to Greeks also, telling them the good news(K) about the Lord Jesus. 21 The Lord’s hand was with them,(L) and a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord.(M)

22 News of this reached the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas(N) to Antioch. 23 When he arrived and saw what the grace of God had done,(O) he was glad and encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts.(P) 24 He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit(Q) and faith, and a great number of people were brought to the Lord.(R)

25 Then Barnabas went to Tarsus(S) to look for Saul, 26 and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. The disciples(T) were called Christians first(U) at Antioch.

27 During this time some prophets(V) came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. 28 One of them, named Agabus,(W) stood up and through the Spirit predicted that a severe famine would spread over the entire Roman world.(X) (This happened during the reign of Claudius.)(Y) 29 The disciples,(Z) as each one was able, decided to provide help(AA) for the brothers and sisters(AB) living in Judea. 30 This they did, sending their gift to the elders(AC) by Barnabas(AD) and Saul.(AE)
