Arrested in the Temple

26 Then Paul took the men, and the next day, having been purified with them, (A)entered the temple (B)to announce the [a]expiration of the days of purification, at which time an offering should be made for each one of them.

27 Now when the seven days were almost ended, (C)the Jews from Asia, seeing him in the temple, stirred up the whole crowd and (D)laid hands on him, 28 crying out, “Men of Israel, help! This is the man (E)who teaches all men everywhere against the people, the law, and this place; and furthermore he also brought Greeks into the temple and has defiled this holy place.” 29 (For they had [b]previously seen (F)Trophimus the Ephesian with him in the city, whom they supposed that Paul had brought into the temple.)

30 And (G)all the city was disturbed; and the people ran together, seized Paul, and dragged him out of the temple; and immediately the doors were shut. 31 Now as they were (H)seeking to kill him, news came to the commander of the [c]garrison that all Jerusalem was in an uproar. 32 (I)He immediately took soldiers and centurions, and ran down to them. And when they saw the commander and the soldiers, they stopped beating Paul.

Paul Arrested

27 When the seven days were nearly over, some Jews from the province of Asia saw Paul at the temple. They stirred up the whole crowd and seized him,(B) 28 shouting, “Fellow Israelites, help us! This is the man who teaches everyone everywhere against our people and our law and this place. And besides, he has brought Greeks into the temple and defiled this holy place.”(C) 29 (They had previously seen Trophimus(D) the Ephesian(E) in the city with Paul and assumed that Paul had brought him into the temple.)

30 The whole city was aroused, and the people came running from all directions. Seizing Paul,(F) they dragged him(G) from the temple, and immediately the gates were shut. 31 While they were trying to kill him, news reached the commander of the Roman troops that the whole city of Jerusalem was in an uproar. 32 He at once took some officers and soldiers and ran down to the crowd. When the rioters saw the commander and his soldiers, they stopped beating Paul.(H)

(A)They will put you out of the synagogues; yes, the time is coming (B)that whoever kills you will think that he offers God service. And (C)these things they will do [a]to you because they have not known the Father nor Me. But these things I have told you, that when [b]the time comes, you may remember that I told you of them.

“And these things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you.

The Work of the Holy Spirit

“But now I (D)go away to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ But because I have said these things to you, (E)sorrow has filled your heart. Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but (F)if I depart, I will send Him to you. And when He has (G)come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: (H)of sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 (I)of righteousness, (J)because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; 11 (K)of judgment, because (L)the ruler of this world is judged.

12 “I still have many things to say to you, (M)but you cannot bear them now. 13 However, when He, (N)the Spirit of truth, has come, (O)He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.

They will put you out of the synagogue;(A) in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God.(B) They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me.(C) I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember(D) that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you,(E) but now I am going to him who sent me.(F) None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’(G) Rather, you are filled with grief(H) because I have said these things. But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate(I) will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.(J) When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin,(K) because people do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness,(L) because I am going to the Father,(M) where you can see me no longer; 11 and about judgment, because the prince of this world(N) now stands condemned.

12 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.(O) 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth,(P) comes, he will guide you into all the truth.(Q) He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.
