13 Now when Paul and they that were with him had sailed from Paphos, they came to Perge in Pamphylia. And John departing from them, returned to Jerusalem.

14 But they passing through Perge, came to Antioch in Pisidia: and entering into the synagogue on the sabbath day, they sat down.

15 And after the reading of the law and the prophets, the rulers of the synagogue sent to them, saying: Ye men, brethren, if you have any word of exhortation to make to the people, speak.

16 Then Paul rising up, and with his hand bespeaking silence, said: Ye men of Israel, and you that fear God, give ear.

17 The God of the people of Israel chose our fathers, and exalted the people when they were sojourners in the land of Egypt, and with an high arm brought them out from thence,

18 And for the space of forty years endured their manners in the desert.

19 And destroying seven nations in the land of Chanaan, divided their land among them, by lot,

20 As it were, after four hundred and fifty years: and after these things, he gave unto them judges, until Samuel the prophet.

21 And after that they desired a king: and God gave them Saul the son of Cis, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, forty years.

22 And when he had removed him, he raised them up David to be king: to whom giving testimony, he said: I have found David, the son of Jesse, a man according to my own heart, who shall do all my wills.

23 Of this man's seed God according to his promise, hath raised up to Israel a Saviour, Jesus:

24 John first preaching, before his coming, the baptism of penance to all the people of Israel.

25 And when John was fulfilling his course, he said: I am not he, whom you think me to be: but behold, there cometh one after me, whose shoes of his feet I am not worthy to loose.

26 Men, brethren, children of the stock of Abraham, and whosoever among you fear God, to you the word of this salvation is sent.

27 For they that inhabited Jerusalem, and the rulers thereof, not knowing him, nor the voices of the prophets, which are read every sabbath, judging him have fulfilled them.

28 And finding no cause of death in him, they desired of Pilate, that they might kill him.

29 And when they had fulfilled all things that were written of him, taking him down from the tree, they laid him in a sepulchre.

30 But God raised him up from the dead the third day:

31 Who was seen for many days, by them who came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who to this present are his witnesses to the people.

32 And we declare unto you, that the promise which was made to our fathers,

33 This same God hath fulfilled to our children, raising up Jesus, as in the second psalm also is written: Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.

34 And to shew that he raised him up from the dead, not to return now any more to corruption, he said thus: I will give you the holy things of David faithful.

35 And therefore, in another place also, he saith: Thou shalt not suffer thy holy one to see corruption.

36 For David, when he had served in his generation, according to the will of God, slept: and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption.

37 But he whom God hath raised from the dead, saw no corruption.

38 Be it known therefore to you, men, brethren, that through him forgiveness of sins is preached to you: and from all the things, from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses.

39 In him every one that believeth, is justified.

40 Beware, therefore, lest that come upon you which is spoken in the prophets:

41 Behold, ye despisers, and wonder, and perish: for I work a work in your days, a work which you will not believe, if any man shall tell it you.

42 And as they went out, they desired them, that on the next sabbath, they would speak unto them these words.

43 And when the synagogue was broken up, many of the Jews, and of the strangers who served God, followed Paul and Barnabas: who speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.

44 But the next sabbath day, the whole city almost came together, to hear the word of God.

45 And the Jews seeing the multitudes, were filled with envy, and contradicted those things which were said by Paul, blaspheming.

46 Then Paul and Barnabas said boldly: To you it behoved us first to speak the word of God: but because you reject it, and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold we turn to the Gentiles.

47 For so the Lord hath commanded us: I have set thee to be the light of the Gentiles; that thou mayest be for salvation unto the utmost part of the earth.

48 And the Gentiles hearing it, were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to life everlasting, believed.

49 And the word of the Lord was published throughout the whole country.

50 But the Jews stirred up religious and honourable women, and the chief men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas: and cast them out of their coasts.

51 But they, shaking off the dust of their feet against them, came to Iconium.

52 And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Ghost.

14 And it came to pass in Iconium, that they entered together into the synagogue of the Jews, and so spoke that a very great multitude both of the Jews and of the Greeks did believe.

But the unbelieving Jews stirred up and incensed the minds of the Gentiles against the brethren.

A long time therefore they abode there, dealing confidently in the Lord, who gave testimony to the word of his grace, granting signs and wonders to be done by their hands.

And the multitude of the city was divided; and some of them indeed held with the Jews, but some with the apostles.

And when there was an assault made by the Gentiles and the Jews with their rulers, to use them contumeliously, and to stone them:

They understanding it, fled to Lystra, and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and to the whole country round about, and were there preaching the gospel.

And there sat a certain man at Lystra, impotent in his feet, a cripple from his mother's womb, who never had walked.

This same heard Paul speaking. Who looking upon him, and seeing that he had faith to be healed,

Said with a loud voice: Stand upright on thy feet. And he leaped up, and walked.

10 And when the multitudes had seen what Paul had done, they lifted up their voice in the Lycaonian tongue, saying: The gods are come down to us in the likeness of men;

11 And they called Barnabas, Jupiter: but Paul, Mercury; because he was chief speaker.

12 The priest also of Jupiter that was before the city, bringing oxen and garlands before the gate, would have offered sacrifice with the people.

13 Which, when the apostles Barnabas and Paul had heard, rending their clothes, they leaped out among the people, crying,

14 And saying: Ye men, why do ye these things? We also are mortals, men like unto you, preaching to you to be converted from these vain things, to the living God, who made the heaven, and the earth, and the sea, and all things that are in them:

15 Who in times past suffered all nations to walk in their own ways.

16 Nevertheless he left not himself without testimony, doing good from heaven, giving rains and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness.

17 And speaking these things, they scarce restrained the people from sacrificing to them.

18 Now there came thither certain Jews from Antioch, and Iconium: and persuading the multitude, and stoning Paul, drew him out of the city, thinking him to be dead.

19 But as the disciples stood round about him, he rose up and entered into the city, and the next day he departed with Barnabas to Derbe.

20 And when they had preached the gospel to that city, and had taught many, they returned again to Lystra, and to Iconium, and to Antioch:

21 Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith: and that through many tribulations we must enter into the kingdom of God.

22 And when they had ordained to them priests in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, in whom they believed.

23 And passing through Pisidia, they came into Pamphylia.

24 And having spoken the word of the Lord in Perge, they went down into Attalia:

25 And thence they sailed to Antioch, from whence they had been delivered to the grace of God, unto the work which they accomplished.

26 And when they were come, and had assembled the church, they related what great things God had done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles.

27 And they abode no small time with the disciples.

In Pisidian Antioch

13 From Paphos,(A) Paul and his companions sailed to Perga in Pamphylia,(B) where John(C) left them to return to Jerusalem. 14 From Perga they went on to Pisidian Antioch.(D) On the Sabbath(E) they entered the synagogue(F) and sat down. 15 After the reading from the Law(G) and the Prophets, the leaders of the synagogue sent word to them, saying, “Brothers, if you have a word of exhortation for the people, please speak.”

16 Standing up, Paul motioned with his hand(H) and said: “Fellow Israelites and you Gentiles who worship God, listen to me! 17 The God of the people of Israel chose our ancestors; he made the people prosper during their stay in Egypt; with mighty power he led them out of that country;(I) 18 for about forty years he endured their conduct[a](J) in the wilderness;(K) 19 and he overthrew seven nations in Canaan,(L) giving their land to his people(M) as their inheritance.(N) 20 All this took about 450 years.

“After this, God gave them judges(O) until the time of Samuel the prophet.(P) 21 Then the people asked for a king,(Q) and he gave them Saul(R) son of Kish, of the tribe of Benjamin,(S) who ruled forty years. 22 After removing Saul,(T) he made David their king.(U) God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart;(V) he will do everything I want him to do.’(W)

23 “From this man’s descendants(X) God has brought to Israel the Savior(Y) Jesus,(Z) as he promised.(AA) 24 Before the coming of Jesus, John preached repentance and baptism to all the people of Israel.(AB) 25 As John was completing his work,(AC) he said: ‘Who do you suppose I am? I am not the one you are looking for.(AD) But there is one coming after me whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.’(AE)

26 “Fellow children of Abraham(AF) and you God-fearing Gentiles, it is to us that this message of salvation(AG) has been sent. 27 The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus,(AH) yet in condemning him they fulfilled the words of the prophets(AI) that are read every Sabbath. 28 Though they found no proper ground for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed.(AJ) 29 When they had carried out all that was written about him,(AK) they took him down from the cross(AL) and laid him in a tomb.(AM) 30 But God raised him from the dead,(AN) 31 and for many days he was seen by those who had traveled with him from Galilee to Jerusalem.(AO) They are now his witnesses(AP) to our people.

32 “We tell you the good news:(AQ) What God promised our ancestors(AR) 33 he has fulfilled for us, their children, by raising up Jesus.(AS) As it is written in the second Psalm:

“‘You are my son;
today I have become your father.’[b](AT)

34 God raised him from the dead so that he will never be subject to decay. As God has said,

“‘I will give you the holy and sure blessings promised to David.’[c](AU)

35 So it is also stated elsewhere:

“‘You will not let your holy one see decay.’[d](AV)

36 “Now when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep;(AW) he was buried with his ancestors(AX) and his body decayed. 37 But the one whom God raised from the dead(AY) did not see decay.

38 “Therefore, my friends, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you.(AZ) 39 Through him everyone who believes(BA) is set free from every sin, a justification you were not able to obtain under the law of Moses.(BB) 40 Take care that what the prophets have said does not happen to you:

41 “‘Look, you scoffers,
    wonder and perish,
for I am going to do something in your days
    that you would never believe,
    even if someone told you.’[e](BC)

42 As Paul and Barnabas were leaving the synagogue,(BD) the people invited them to speak further about these things on the next Sabbath. 43 When the congregation was dismissed, many of the Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who talked with them and urged them to continue in the grace of God.(BE)

44 On the next Sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord. 45 When the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy. They began to contradict what Paul was saying(BF) and heaped abuse(BG) on him.

46 Then Paul and Barnabas answered them boldly: “We had to speak the word of God to you first.(BH) Since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal life, we now turn to the Gentiles.(BI) 47 For this is what the Lord has commanded us:

“‘I have made you[f] a light for the Gentiles,(BJ)
that you[g] may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.’[h](BK)

48 When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and honored the word of the Lord;(BL) and all who were appointed for eternal life believed.

49 The word of the Lord(BM) spread through the whole region. 50 But the Jewish leaders incited the God-fearing women of high standing and the leading men of the city. They stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their region.(BN) 51 So they shook the dust off their feet(BO) as a warning to them and went to Iconium.(BP) 52 And the disciples(BQ) were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.(BR)

In Iconium

14 At Iconium(BS) Paul and Barnabas went as usual into the Jewish synagogue.(BT) There they spoke so effectively that a great number(BU) of Jews and Greeks believed. But the Jews who refused to believe stirred up the other Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brothers.(BV) So Paul and Barnabas spent considerable time there, speaking boldly(BW) for the Lord, who confirmed the message of his grace by enabling them to perform signs and wonders.(BX) The people of the city were divided; some sided with the Jews, others with the apostles.(BY) There was a plot afoot among both Gentiles and Jews,(BZ) together with their leaders, to mistreat them and stone them.(CA) But they found out about it and fled(CB) to the Lycaonian cities of Lystra and Derbe and to the surrounding country, where they continued to preach(CC) the gospel.(CD)

In Lystra and Derbe

In Lystra there sat a man who was lame. He had been that way from birth(CE) and had never walked. He listened to Paul as he was speaking. Paul looked directly at him, saw that he had faith to be healed(CF) 10 and called out, “Stand up on your feet!”(CG) At that, the man jumped up and began to walk.(CH)

11 When the crowd saw what Paul had done, they shouted in the Lycaonian language, “The gods have come down to us in human form!”(CI) 12 Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul they called Hermes because he was the chief speaker.(CJ) 13 The priest of Zeus, whose temple was just outside the city, brought bulls and wreaths to the city gates because he and the crowd wanted to offer sacrifices to them.

14 But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of this, they tore their clothes(CK) and rushed out into the crowd, shouting: 15 “Friends, why are you doing this? We too are only human,(CL) like you. We are bringing you good news,(CM) telling you to turn from these worthless things(CN) to the living God,(CO) who made the heavens and the earth(CP) and the sea and everything in them.(CQ) 16 In the past, he let(CR) all nations go their own way.(CS) 17 Yet he has not left himself without testimony:(CT) He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons;(CU) he provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy.”(CV) 18 Even with these words, they had difficulty keeping the crowd from sacrificing to them.

19 Then some Jews(CW) came from Antioch and Iconium(CX) and won the crowd over. They stoned Paul(CY) and dragged him outside the city, thinking he was dead. 20 But after the disciples(CZ) had gathered around him, he got up and went back into the city. The next day he and Barnabas left for Derbe.

The Return to Antioch in Syria

21 They preached the gospel(DA) in that city and won a large number(DB) of disciples. Then they returned to Lystra, Iconium(DC) and Antioch, 22 strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith.(DD) “We must go through many hardships(DE) to enter the kingdom of God,” they said. 23 Paul and Barnabas appointed elders[i](DF) for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting,(DG) committed them to the Lord,(DH) in whom they had put their trust. 24 After going through Pisidia, they came into Pamphylia,(DI) 25 and when they had preached the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia.

26 From Attalia they sailed back to Antioch,(DJ) where they had been committed to the grace of God(DK) for the work they had now completed.(DL) 27 On arriving there, they gathered the church together and reported all that God had done through them(DM) and how he had opened a door(DN) of faith to the Gentiles.
