James Killed and Peter Imprisoned

12 About that time Herod the king laid violent hands on some who belonged to the church. He killed (A)James the brother of John (B)with the sword, and when he saw (C)that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. This was during (D)the days of Unleavened Bread. And when he had seized him, he put him (E)in prison, delivering him over to four (F)squads of soldiers to guard him, intending after the Passover to bring him out to the people. So Peter was kept in prison, but earnest (G)prayer for him was made to God by the church.

Peter Is Rescued

Now when Herod was about to bring him out, on that very night, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, (H)bound with two chains, and sentries before the door were guarding the prison. And behold, (I)an angel of the Lord (J)stood next to him, and a light shone in the cell. (K)He struck Peter on the side and woke him, saying, “Get up quickly.” And (L)the chains fell off his hands. And the angel said to him, “Dress yourself and (M)put on your sandals.” And he did so. And he said to him, “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me.” And he went out and followed him. He did not know that what was being done by the angel was real, but (N)thought he was seeing a vision. 10 When they had passed the first and the second guard, they came to the iron gate leading into the city. (O)It opened for them of its own accord, and they went out and went along one street, and immediately the angel left him. 11 When Peter (P)came to himself, he said, “Now I am sure that (Q)the Lord has sent his angel and (R)rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting.”

12 When he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of (S)John whose other name was Mark, where many were gathered together and (T)were praying. 13 And when he knocked at the door of the gateway, (U)a servant girl named Rhoda came to answer. 14 Recognizing Peter's voice, (V)in her joy she did not open the gate but ran in and reported that Peter was standing at the gate. 15 They said to her, “You are out of your mind.” But she kept insisting that it was so, and they kept saying, “It is (W)his angel!” 16 But Peter continued knocking, and when they opened, they saw him and were amazed. 17 But (X)motioning to them with his hand to be silent, he described to them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, “Tell these things to (Y)James and to (Z)the brothers.”[a] Then he departed and went to another place.

18 Now when day came, there was no little disturbance among the soldiers over what had become of Peter. 19 And after Herod searched for him and did not find him, he examined the sentries and (AA)ordered that they should be put to death. Then he went down from Judea to Caesarea and spent time there.

The Death of Herod

20 Now Herod was angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon, and they came to him with one accord, and (AB)having persuaded Blastus, the king's chamberlain,[b] they asked for peace, because (AC)their country depended on the king's country for food. 21 On an appointed day Herod put on his royal robes, took his seat upon the throne, and delivered an oration to them. 22 And the people were shouting, “The voice of a god, and not of a man!” 23 Immediately (AD)an angel of the Lord struck him down, because (AE)he did not give God the glory, and he was eaten by worms and breathed his last.

24 But (AF)the word of God increased and multiplied.

25 (AG)And Barnabas and Saul returned from[c] Jerusalem when they had completed their service, bringing with them (AH)John, whose other name was Mark.

Barnabas and Saul Sent Off

13 Now there were in the church at Antioch (AI)prophets and (AJ)teachers, (AK)Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger,[d] Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen a lifelong friend of (AL)Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, (AM)the Holy Spirit said, (AN)“Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul (AO)for the work to which I have called them.” Then after fasting and (AP)praying they laid their hands on them and (AQ)sent them off.

Barnabas and Saul on Cyprus

So, being sent out (AR)by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia, and from there they sailed to Cyprus. When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God (AS)in the synagogues of the Jews. And they had (AT)John to (AU)assist them. When they had gone through the whole island as far as Paphos, they came upon a certain (AV)magician, (AW)a Jewish false prophet named Bar-Jesus. He was with (AX)the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, a man of intelligence, who summoned Barnabas and Saul and sought to hear the word of God. But Elymas the (AY)magician (for that is the meaning of his name) (AZ)opposed them, seeking to turn (BA)the proconsul away from the faith. But Saul, who was also called Paul, (BB)filled with the Holy Spirit, looked intently at him 10 and said, “You (BC)son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, full of all deceit and (BD)villainy, will you not stop (BE)making crooked (BF)the straight paths of the Lord? 11 And now, behold, (BG)the hand of the Lord is upon you, and you will be blind and unable to see the sun for a time.” Immediately mist and darkness fell upon him, and he went about seeking (BH)people to lead him by the hand. 12 Then the proconsul believed, when he saw what had occurred, for he was astonished at (BI)the teaching of the Lord.

Paul and Barnabas at Antioch in Pisidia

13 Now Paul and his companions set sail from Paphos and came to Perga in Pamphylia. And (BJ)John left them and returned (BK)to Jerusalem, 14 but they went on from Perga and came to Antioch in Pisidia. And (BL)on the Sabbath day (BM)they went into the synagogue and sat down. 15 After (BN)the reading from (BO)the Law and the Prophets, (BP)the rulers of the synagogue sent a message to them, saying, “Brothers, if you have any (BQ)word of encouragement for the people, say it.” 16 So Paul stood up, and (BR)motioning with his hand said:

“Men of Israel and (BS)you who fear God, listen. 17 (BT)The God of this people Israel (BU)chose our fathers and (BV)made the people great (BW)during their stay in the land of Egypt, and (BX)with uplifted arm he led them out of it. 18 And for about (BY)forty years (BZ)he put up with[e] them in the wilderness. 19 And (CA)after destroying (CB)seven nations in the land of Canaan, (CC)he gave them their land as an inheritance. 20 All this took about 450 years. And after that (CD)he gave them judges until (CE)Samuel the prophet. 21 Then (CF)they asked for a king, and God gave them Saul (CG)the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years. 22 And (CH)when he had removed him, (CI)he raised up David to be their king, of whom he testified and said, (CJ)‘I have found in David the son of Jesse (CK)a man after my heart, (CL)who will do all my will.’ 23 (CM)Of this man's offspring God has brought to Israel (CN)a Savior, Jesus, (CO)as he promised. 24 Before his coming, (CP)John had proclaimed (CQ)a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. 25 And as John was finishing his course, (CR)he said, ‘What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. No, but behold, after me one is coming, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie.’

26 “Brothers, sons of the family of Abraham, and those among you (CS)who fear God, to us has been sent (CT)the message of (CU)this salvation. 27 For those who live in Jerusalem and their rulers, because (CV)they did not recognize him nor understand (CW)the utterances of the prophets, which are read every Sabbath, (CX)fulfilled them by condemning him. 28 And (CY)though they found in him no guilt worthy of death, (CZ)they asked Pilate to have him executed. 29 And when (DA)they had carried out all that was written of him, (DB)they took him down from (DC)the tree and laid him in a tomb. 30 But (DD)God raised him from the dead, 31 and for many days (DE)he appeared to those (DF)who had come up with him (DG)from Galilee to Jerusalem, (DH)who are now (DI)his witnesses to the people. 32 And we bring you the good news (DJ)that what God promised to the fathers, 33 (DK)this he has fulfilled to us their children by raising Jesus, as also it is written in the second Psalm,

(DL)“‘You are my Son,
    today I have begotten you.’

34 And as for the fact that he raised him from the dead, (DM)(DN)no more to return to corruption, he has spoken in this way,

“‘I will give you (DO)the holy and sure blessings of David.’

35 Therefore he says also in another psalm,

(DP)“‘You will not let your Holy One see corruption.’

36 For David, after he had (DQ)served the purpose of God in his own generation, (DR)fell asleep and (DS)was laid with his fathers and saw corruption, 37 but he whom (DT)God raised up did not see corruption. 38 Let it be known to you therefore, brothers, (DU)that through this man (DV)forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, 39 and by him (DW)everyone who believes is freed[f] from everything (DX)from which you could not be freed by the law of Moses. 40 Beware, therefore, lest what is said in the Prophets should come about:

41 (DY)“‘Look, you scoffers,
    be astounded and perish;
for I am doing a work in your days,
a work that you will not believe, even if one tells it to you.’”

42 As they went out, the people begged that these things might be told them the next Sabbath. 43 And after the meeting of the synagogue broke up, many Jews and (DZ)devout (EA)converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who, as they spoke with them, urged them (EB)to continue in (EC)the grace of God.

44 The next Sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord. 45 (ED)But (EE)when the Jews[g] saw the crowds, they were filled with (EF)jealousy and began to contradict what was spoken by Paul, (EG)reviling him. 46 And Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly, saying, “It was necessary that the word of God (EH)be spoken first to you. (EI)Since you thrust it aside and judge yourselves (EJ)unworthy of eternal life, behold, we (EK)are turning to the Gentiles. 47 (EL)For so the Lord has commanded us, saying,

(EM)“‘I have made you (EN)a light for the Gentiles,
that you may (EO)bring salvation to the ends of the earth.’”

48 And when the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and (EP)glorifying the word of the Lord, and as many as were appointed to eternal life believed. 49 And the word of the Lord was spreading throughout the whole region. 50 (EQ)But the Jews incited the devout (ER)women of high standing and the leading men of the city, (ES)stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and (ET)drove them out of their district. 51 But they (EU)shook off the dust from their feet against them and went to Iconium. 52 And the disciples were filled (EV)with joy and (EW)with the Holy Spirit.

Peter’s Miraculous Escape From Prison

12 It was about this time that King Herod(A) arrested some who belonged to the church, intending to persecute them. He had James, the brother of John,(B) put to death with the sword.(C) When he saw that this met with approval among the Jews,(D) he proceeded to seize Peter also. This happened during the Festival of Unleavened Bread.(E) After arresting him, he put him in prison, handing him over to be guarded by four squads of four soldiers each. Herod intended to bring him out for public trial after the Passover.(F)

So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him.(G)

The night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains,(H) and sentries stood guard at the entrance. Suddenly an angel(I) of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him up. “Quick, get up!” he said, and the chains fell off Peter’s wrists.(J)

Then the angel said to him, “Put on your clothes and sandals.” And Peter did so. “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me,” the angel told him. Peter followed him out of the prison, but he had no idea that what the angel was doing was really happening; he thought he was seeing a vision.(K) 10 They passed the first and second guards and came to the iron gate leading to the city. It opened for them by itself,(L) and they went through it. When they had walked the length of one street, suddenly the angel left him.

11 Then Peter came to himself(M) and said, “Now I know without a doubt that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me(N) from Herod’s clutches and from everything the Jewish people were hoping would happen.”

12 When this had dawned on him, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John, also called Mark,(O) where many people had gathered and were praying.(P) 13 Peter knocked at the outer entrance, and a servant named Rhoda came to answer the door.(Q) 14 When she recognized Peter’s voice, she was so overjoyed(R) she ran back without opening it and exclaimed, “Peter is at the door!”

15 “You’re out of your mind,” they told her. When she kept insisting that it was so, they said, “It must be his angel.”(S)

16 But Peter kept on knocking, and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astonished. 17 Peter motioned with his hand(T) for them to be quiet and described how the Lord had brought him out of prison. “Tell James(U) and the other brothers and sisters(V) about this,” he said, and then he left for another place.

18 In the morning, there was no small commotion among the soldiers as to what had become of Peter. 19 After Herod had a thorough search made for him and did not find him, he cross-examined the guards and ordered that they be executed.(W)

Herod’s Death

Then Herod went from Judea to Caesarea(X) and stayed there. 20 He had been quarreling with the people of Tyre and Sidon;(Y) they now joined together and sought an audience with him. After securing the support of Blastus, a trusted personal servant of the king, they asked for peace, because they depended on the king’s country for their food supply.(Z)

21 On the appointed day Herod, wearing his royal robes, sat on his throne and delivered a public address to the people. 22 They shouted, “This is the voice of a god, not of a man.” 23 Immediately, because Herod did not give praise to God, an angel(AA) of the Lord struck him down,(AB) and he was eaten by worms and died.

24 But the word of God(AC) continued to spread and flourish.(AD)

Barnabas and Saul Sent Off

25 When Barnabas(AE) and Saul had finished their mission,(AF) they returned from[a] Jerusalem, taking with them John, also called Mark.(AG) 13 Now in the church at Antioch(AH) there were prophets(AI) and teachers:(AJ) Barnabas,(AK) Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene,(AL) Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod(AM) the tetrarch) and Saul. While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said,(AN) “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work(AO) to which I have called them.”(AP) So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them(AQ) and sent them off.(AR)

On Cyprus

The two of them, sent on their way by the Holy Spirit,(AS) went down to Seleucia and sailed from there to Cyprus.(AT) When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God(AU) in the Jewish synagogues.(AV) John(AW) was with them as their helper.

They traveled through the whole island until they came to Paphos. There they met a Jewish sorcerer(AX) and false prophet(AY) named Bar-Jesus, who was an attendant of the proconsul,(AZ) Sergius Paulus. The proconsul, an intelligent man, sent for Barnabas and Saul because he wanted to hear the word of God. But Elymas the sorcerer(BA) (for that is what his name means) opposed them and tried to turn the proconsul(BB) from the faith.(BC) Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit,(BD) looked straight at Elymas and said, 10 “You are a child of the devil(BE) and an enemy of everything that is right! You are full of all kinds of deceit and trickery. Will you never stop perverting the right ways of the Lord?(BF) 11 Now the hand of the Lord is against you.(BG) You are going to be blind for a time, not even able to see the light of the sun.”(BH)

Immediately mist and darkness came over him, and he groped about, seeking someone to lead him by the hand. 12 When the proconsul(BI) saw what had happened, he believed, for he was amazed at the teaching about the Lord.

In Pisidian Antioch

13 From Paphos,(BJ) Paul and his companions sailed to Perga in Pamphylia,(BK) where John(BL) left them to return to Jerusalem. 14 From Perga they went on to Pisidian Antioch.(BM) On the Sabbath(BN) they entered the synagogue(BO) and sat down. 15 After the reading from the Law(BP) and the Prophets, the leaders of the synagogue sent word to them, saying, “Brothers, if you have a word of exhortation for the people, please speak.”

16 Standing up, Paul motioned with his hand(BQ) and said: “Fellow Israelites and you Gentiles who worship God, listen to me! 17 The God of the people of Israel chose our ancestors; he made the people prosper during their stay in Egypt; with mighty power he led them out of that country;(BR) 18 for about forty years he endured their conduct[b](BS) in the wilderness;(BT) 19 and he overthrew seven nations in Canaan,(BU) giving their land to his people(BV) as their inheritance.(BW) 20 All this took about 450 years.

“After this, God gave them judges(BX) until the time of Samuel the prophet.(BY) 21 Then the people asked for a king,(BZ) and he gave them Saul(CA) son of Kish, of the tribe of Benjamin,(CB) who ruled forty years. 22 After removing Saul,(CC) he made David their king.(CD) God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart;(CE) he will do everything I want him to do.’(CF)

23 “From this man’s descendants(CG) God has brought to Israel the Savior(CH) Jesus,(CI) as he promised.(CJ) 24 Before the coming of Jesus, John preached repentance and baptism to all the people of Israel.(CK) 25 As John was completing his work,(CL) he said: ‘Who do you suppose I am? I am not the one you are looking for.(CM) But there is one coming after me whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.’(CN)

26 “Fellow children of Abraham(CO) and you God-fearing Gentiles, it is to us that this message of salvation(CP) has been sent. 27 The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus,(CQ) yet in condemning him they fulfilled the words of the prophets(CR) that are read every Sabbath. 28 Though they found no proper ground for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed.(CS) 29 When they had carried out all that was written about him,(CT) they took him down from the cross(CU) and laid him in a tomb.(CV) 30 But God raised him from the dead,(CW) 31 and for many days he was seen by those who had traveled with him from Galilee to Jerusalem.(CX) They are now his witnesses(CY) to our people.

32 “We tell you the good news:(CZ) What God promised our ancestors(DA) 33 he has fulfilled for us, their children, by raising up Jesus.(DB) As it is written in the second Psalm:

“‘You are my son;
today I have become your father.’[c](DC)

34 God raised him from the dead so that he will never be subject to decay. As God has said,

“‘I will give you the holy and sure blessings promised to David.’[d](DD)

35 So it is also stated elsewhere:

“‘You will not let your holy one see decay.’[e](DE)

36 “Now when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep;(DF) he was buried with his ancestors(DG) and his body decayed. 37 But the one whom God raised from the dead(DH) did not see decay.

38 “Therefore, my friends, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you.(DI) 39 Through him everyone who believes(DJ) is set free from every sin, a justification you were not able to obtain under the law of Moses.(DK) 40 Take care that what the prophets have said does not happen to you:

41 “‘Look, you scoffers,
    wonder and perish,
for I am going to do something in your days
    that you would never believe,
    even if someone told you.’[f](DL)

42 As Paul and Barnabas were leaving the synagogue,(DM) the people invited them to speak further about these things on the next Sabbath. 43 When the congregation was dismissed, many of the Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who talked with them and urged them to continue in the grace of God.(DN)

44 On the next Sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord. 45 When the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy. They began to contradict what Paul was saying(DO) and heaped abuse(DP) on him.

46 Then Paul and Barnabas answered them boldly: “We had to speak the word of God to you first.(DQ) Since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal life, we now turn to the Gentiles.(DR) 47 For this is what the Lord has commanded us:

“‘I have made you[g] a light for the Gentiles,(DS)
that you[h] may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.’[i](DT)

48 When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and honored the word of the Lord;(DU) and all who were appointed for eternal life believed.

49 The word of the Lord(DV) spread through the whole region. 50 But the Jewish leaders incited the God-fearing women of high standing and the leading men of the city. They stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their region.(DW) 51 So they shook the dust off their feet(DX) as a warning to them and went to Iconium.(DY) 52 And the disciples(DZ) were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.(EA)
