Matthias Chosen to Replace Judas

¹² Then ^(A)they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day's journey away. ¹³ And when they had entered, they went up to ^(B)the upper room, where they were staying, ^(C)Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon ^(D)the Zealot and Judas the son of James. ¹⁴ All these ^(E)with one accord ^(F)were devoting themselves to prayer, together with ^(G)the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and ^(H)his brothers.^[a]

¹⁵ In those days Peter stood up among ^(I)the brothers (the company of persons was in all about 120) and said, ¹⁶ “Brothers, ^(J)the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David concerning Judas, ^(K)who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus. ¹⁷ For ^(L)he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in ^(M)this ministry.” ¹⁸ (Now this man ^(N)acquired a field with ^(O)the reward of his wickedness, and falling headlong^[b] he burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out. ¹⁹ And it became known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the field was called ^(P)in their own language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.) ²⁰ “For it is written in the Book of Psalms,

and

²¹ So one of the men who have accompanied us during ^(S)all the time that the Lord Jesus ^(T)went in and out among us, ^22 (U)beginning from the baptism of John until the day when ^(V)he was taken up from us—one of these men must become with us ^(W)a witness to his resurrection.” ²³ And they put forward two, Joseph called ^(X)Barsabbas, who was also called ^(Y)Justus, and ^(Z)Matthias. ²⁴ And ^(AA)they prayed and said, “You, Lord, ^(AB)who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen ²⁵ to take the place in ^(AC)this ministry and ^(AD)apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.” ²⁶ And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

Suffering as a Christian

¹² Beloved, do not be surprised at ^(A)the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. ¹³ But rejoice ^(B)insofar as you share Christ's sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad ^(C)when his glory is revealed. ^14 (D)If you are insulted ^(E)for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory^[a] and of God rests upon you. ¹⁵ But ^(F)let none of you suffer as a murderer or a thief or an evildoer or ^(G)as a meddler. ¹⁶ Yet ^(H)if anyone suffers as a ^(I)Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God ^(J)in that name. ¹⁷ For it is time for judgment ^(K)to begin at the household of God; and ^(L)if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who ^(M)do not obey the gospel of God? ¹⁸ And

¹⁹ Therefore let those who suffer according to God's will ^(O)entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good.

^6 (A)Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, ^7 (B)casting all your anxieties on him, because ^(C)he cares for you. ^8 (D)Be sober-minded; ^(E)be watchful. Your ^(F)adversary the devil ^(G)prowls around ^(H)like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. ^9 (I)Resist him, ^(J)firm in your faith, knowing that ^(K)the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. ¹⁰ And ^(L)after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, ^(M)who has called you to his ^(N)eternal glory in Christ, will himself ^(O)restore, ^(P)confirm, strengthen, and establish you. ^11 (Q)To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

The High Priestly Prayer

17 When Jesus had spoken these words, ^(A)he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, ^(B)the hour has come; ^(C)glorify your Son that the Son may ^(D)glorify you, ² since ^(E)you have given him authority over all flesh, ^(F)to give eternal life to all ^(G)whom you have given him. ^3 (H)And this is eternal life, ^(I)that they know you, ^(J)the only ^(K)true God, and ^(L)Jesus Christ whom you have sent. ⁴ I ^(M)glorified you on earth, ^(N)having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. ⁵ And now, Father, ^(O)glorify me in your own presence with the glory ^(P)that I had with you ^(Q)before the world existed.

^6 (R)“I have manifested your name to the people ^(S)whom you gave me out of the world. ^(T)Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. ⁷ Now they know that everything ^(U)that you have given me is from you. ⁸ For I have given them ^(V)the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that ^(W)I came from you; and ^(X)they have believed that you sent me. ⁹ I am praying for them. ^(Y)I am not praying for the world but for those ^(Z)whom you have given me, for ^(AA)they are yours. ^10 (AB)All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and ^(AC)I am glorified in them. ¹¹ And I am no longer in the world, but ^(AD)they are in the world, and ^(AE)I am coming to you. ^(AF)Holy Father, ^(AG)keep them in your name, ^(AH)which you have given me, ^(AI)that they may be one, ^(AJ)even as we are one.
