4 But that same night the Lord said to Nathan,
5 “Go and tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord has declared: Are you the one to build a house for me to live in? 6 I have never lived in a house, from the day I brought the Israelites out of Egypt until this very day. I have always moved from one place to another with a tent and a Tabernacle as my dwelling. 7 Yet no matter where I have gone with the Israelites, I have never once complained to Israel’s tribal leaders, the shepherds of my people Israel. I have never asked them, “Why haven’t you built me a beautiful cedar house?”’
8 “Now go and say to my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies has declared: I took you from tending sheep in the pasture and selected you to be the leader of my people Israel. 9 I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have destroyed all your enemies before your eyes. Now I will make your name as famous as anyone who has ever lived on the earth! 10 And I will provide a homeland for my people Israel, planting them in a secure place where they will never be disturbed. Evil nations won’t oppress them as they’ve done in the past, 11 starting from the time I appointed judges to rule my people Israel. And I will give you rest from all your enemies.
“‘Furthermore, the Lord declares that he will make a house for you—a dynasty of kings! 12 For when you die and are buried with your ancestors, I will raise up one of your descendants, your own offspring, and I will make his kingdom strong. 13 He is the one who will build a house—a temple—for my name. And I will secure his royal throne forever. 14 I will be his father, and he will be my son. If he sins, I will correct and discipline him with the rod, like any father would do. 15 But my favor will not be taken from him as I took it from Saul, whom I removed from your sight. 16 Your house and your kingdom will continue before me[a] for all time, and your throne will be secure forever.’”

5 “Go and tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord says: Are you(A) the one to build me a house to dwell in?(B) 6 I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought the Israelites up out of Egypt to this day.(C) I have been moving from place to place with a tent(D) as my dwelling.(E) 7 Wherever I have moved with all the Israelites,(F) did I ever say to any of their rulers whom I commanded to shepherd(G) my people Israel, “Why have you not built me a house(H) of cedar?(I)”’
8 “Now then, tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty says: I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock,(J) and appointed you ruler(K) over my people Israel.(L) 9 I have been with you wherever you have gone,(M) and I have cut off all your enemies from before you.(N) Now I will make your name great, like the names of the greatest men on earth.(O) 10 And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant(P) them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed.(Q) Wicked(R) people will not oppress them anymore,(S) as they did at the beginning 11 and have done ever since the time I appointed leaders[a](T) over my people Israel. I will also give you rest from all your enemies.(U)
“‘The Lord declares(V) to you that the Lord himself will establish(W) a house(X) for you: 12 When your days are over and you rest(Y) with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood,(Z) and I will establish his kingdom.(AA) 13 He is the one who will build a house(AB) for my Name,(AC) and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.(AD) 14 I will be his father, and he will be my son.(AE) When he does wrong, I will punish him(AF) with a rod(AG) wielded by men, with floggings inflicted by human hands. 15 But my love will never be taken away from him,(AH) as I took it away from Saul,(AI) whom I removed from before you. 16 Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me[b]; your throne(AJ) will be established(AK) forever.(AL)’”

4 But that night the Lord said to Nathan, 5 “Go and tell my servant David that I say to him, ‘You are not the one to build a temple for me to live in. 6 From the time I rescued the people of Israel from Egypt until now, I have never lived in a temple; I have traveled around living in a tent. 7 In all my traveling with the people of Israel I never asked any of the leaders[a] that I appointed why they had not built me a temple made of cedar.’
8 “So tell my servant David that I, the Lord Almighty, say to him, ‘I took you from looking after sheep in the fields and made you the ruler of my people Israel. 9 I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have defeated all your enemies as you advanced. I will make you as famous as the greatest leaders in the world. 10-11 I have chosen a place for my people Israel and have settled them there, where they will live without being oppressed any more. Ever since they entered this land, they have been attacked by violent people, but this will not happen again. I promise to keep you safe from all your enemies and to give you descendants. 12 (A)When you die and are buried with your ancestors, I will make one of your sons king and will keep his kingdom strong. 13 He will be the one to build a temple for me, and I will make sure that his dynasty continues forever. 14 (B)I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he does wrong, I will punish him as a father punishes his son. 15 But I will not withdraw my support from him as I did from Saul, whom I removed so that you could be king. 16 (C)You will always have descendants, and I will make your kingdom last forever. Your dynasty will never end.’”
